Books I have known in my travels

A week or two back, going up into the loft I found a box of books and these two being among them. Purchased at a time when we used to buy and sell second-hand books these had remained unsold and tucked away.

I’m not sure how many of these stars remain with us but it is possible. I’m 77 so it’s possible for them to be 84-85. I wish them good health.

The books themselves are full of great portraits in colour and sepia.

I will also be missing for a few days but will, as usual, hopefully catch up on my return.

Best wishes and stay safe. Patrick

You've heard it said of great portraits

But none will be as piercing as this guys eye's

It's hard to look away!

Thank you zac 108 for the great portrait

Iceland, Jokulsarlon

It's not a great portrait of a tern, but I like the light in the wings

Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe

And to love you

All I need is the air that I breathe

Yes, to love you

All I need is the air that I breathe

… on a windy day

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3QqWErne1w

A male Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) glides toward the nest occupied by his mate, eagerly anticipating his arrival home. While the gusty wind made his landing a bit less graceful than usual, it did ruffle his mates plumage in a way that made him recall Marilyn’s stance over the steam vent, stirring his ardor a bit and warming the homecoming.

This angle on the male reinforces my amazement that these birds only weigh around 5 to 6 pounds (2.5 kg) despite their relatively large size. Evolution’s masterful engineering yields this wonderful feat mostly as a result of their hollow bones.

Another photo from last year when I got to see these marvelous Yellow-headed Blackbirds for the first time near Vanscoy, Canada. As usual, the males are spectacular in their yellow plumage and this male gave me a great portrait as he perched on this branch and watched me!

Taken 9 June 2017 near Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Bokeh texture by Ishkamina. Thank you!

"The Power of Imagination", another creative work in Photoshop, with which I offer you this quote attributed to Buddha; "You are what you think. And with your thoughts, you make the world.”

Once again, as so many of my recent favourite Photoshop creations have been, the main image is from my good friend Jennifer, link to her original brilliant image in the comments below. Check out her awesome photostream for some great portraits and other images.

I'm very lucky, another great portrait of me !! This time it's L♡uise 92, last night @ Teqi's. Grand merci à toi, je l'adore !

In this "New Normal" of the Pandemic, there's a lot of bad news. I'm glad to still have a job! but things are not completely serene there in these times either. Still, if I have to work from home, it's great to get to sit out in warm springtime sun and get kitty kisses during the lunch hour. Tikki was head-marking my glasses which is why they are awry and did give me a little kitty kiss... not in an area that suggests she was "looking for lunch leftovers on my face", either! So while it isn't a great portrait for me, at least I look happy and Tikki is as always a stunner. (Added to Happy Caturday 21 November 2020, theme “Love is Touch”).

These boys, dressed in leather and chains are no means to be messed around with here!

After a nice little chat with this cool dude, he let me take a snap of him. And then I made a quick exit from him!

We were lying in the wet snow in Algonquin, delighted to be close to very relaxed male Spruce Grouse - two of them were resting in the morning, and effectively sitting for portraits. Suddenly, from a corner of the densely-wooded area, another bird popped up, and walked cautiously around the perimeter of the area. This is not a great portrait, but it captures the experience of being parked in the snow and having this amazing experience, rare for me, of incredible birds just showing up. Thanks to Paul and Jodie for including me on an amazing trip.Later investigation by Paul identified this as a female.

Band on the run, well, this song and album are from that year, and June 18th is also the birthday of Sir Paul McCartney, and coincidentally, that's my birthday date, so I could say that maybe my parents were listening to that LP around the day I was born.

Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash

As we fell into the sun

And the first one said to the second one there,

"I hope you're having fun."

done for my light hunters course. I have to admit I love the holidays because it means I can take lots and lots of pictures of E and M, when they cooperate!

"One of the ways that is vital to me getting through the grey is to take portraits of others. The great thing about grey days is that though the light they provide isn't as plentiful, it does offer an even light which makes for a great portrait."

West Burton falls captured on a recent visit to the dales. Although not ideal lighting a bit harsh at times this one turned out pretty well.

Having to take of shoes and socks to wade in barefoot and I can tell you the water was pretty cold.

Polariser and getting a single exposure at f16 to work well here and liked the foreground interest of these falls leading you through to the main falls ahead.

My first visit to Yorkshire for a few years and my first visit to these falls and hope to return when there is more likely more water and when the light is less harsh, the village itself is stunning.

COYOTE CLOSEUP

I think they are brother and sister, the brother in the background. The whole family of four was out on this day and the male was just laying in the grass. I saw the female walking in from the right so I started clicking for continuous time lapse. But when I reviewed the photo onscreen I saw that this would make for a great portrait of the two. This was cropped in at least 60%.

Thank you very much for your kind comments 👍

Bailey here has quite the " Twinkle " in his eye, not sure if it's because he's smiling or for the fact that he's trying out the Whelping Box for Karma and her puppies. This was taken some time ago, but it's a great portrait of a wonderful friend !

Wherever I went, I used to have my Nikon F4 loaded with colour-film.

(Now replaced by Nikon D7200, which I still try to use as much as possible like a FILM camera)

Very often I had my second camera (another F4) ready with a gritty 400 asa black and white film.

Digis don't have that problem, he?

Here in Crete I had this secret goal to capture the people, those interesting faces, I wanted to make some great portraits.

In the small mountain village of Prina, where time has stood still, my dream came true.

A group of people sat in the square, in the shade, chatting and laughing.

They have known real hardship, it shows, but there is great kindness and generosity.

It was Vesper's time. The tinny bell sang invitingly.

The friends around them moved out of the way

They allowed me to photograph them, her son and husband next to her, I first used the camera at hand (colour) to put them at ease (I thought), but to the Cretans a ‘portrait’ is always very serious... then I took this one...

I understood Ansel Adams, the lengths he went to, what he felt when he saw his subjects, the textures and ALL those wonderful grey-tones.

A magic moment, the lady so beautiful and lovely.

Later, for Getty, I needed a model release... she could barely write and did not know her year of birth!

Thank you, M, (*_*)

Great portrait of a smoldering moi from my talented friend sUiCiDe.bUnnY

He carries the fruit and vegetables in the market. I love portraits where the subject is really meeting you head-on. His scarf and the surrounding bustle and ambient light is also great. I keep going back to the market for the light and the occasional great portrait.

George Cohon, clown controller extraordinaire.

Kingfishers fly rapidly and low over water hunting fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surface. They are vulnerable to hard winters and habitat degradation through pollution or unsympathetic management of watercourses. Kingfishers are amber listed because of their unfavourable conservation status in Europe.

There are many great portrait shots of Kingfishers, but I was particularly keen to catch this wonderful bird in the dive and rising from the water.

This series of shots was taken in Suffolk using a remote camera set up by pre-focussing on the dive point. Shutter speed was set to a minimum of 1/5000 of a second typically using an aperture of no less than F5.6. I opted for a Nikon 200mm F2 lens which has such a wonderful quality of isolating the subject even at this depth of field.

The parade of backyard birds marches on. You know they are around, but rarely show themselves for any length of time. They seem to be such a hyper bird. Blue Jays are not very nice, but do provide a great portrait if only one can get them to stay in place for a few seconds. Chances are by the time the camera is in position, the subject will be long gone.

Best viewed large.

On Friday the 13th, I said my final farewells to Dad when he died peacefully and surrounded by love.

His list of accomplishments in his nearly 88 years was enormous, and I don’t think he could have fit much more into his life. He worked harder than anyone I have ever met, and he helped and inspired so many people along the way.

He excelled as a barrister and worked not only here in Australia but also in the US, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Papua New Guinea, and, in one of his career highlights, he appeared before the Privy Council in England. Later he became a judge and was also a lecturer at a university in Italy.

I’ll miss his gentle warmth, his raucous laughter, his intelligence, his immeasurable generosity, and his courage in fighting to bring more justice and integrity to our world.

I’ll never forget you and will always feel immense gratitude for the wonderful life you gave me and that I was fortunate enough to share with you.

The morning light lit up this House Finch beautifully. Along with a nice background, that made for a great portrait opportunity.

Right now, i'm feeling for A.R.Rahman to win the Oscar for Best Music and Best Score. I'm one of his biggest fans, dating back to the age of 6. It's when he first scored a movie called Roja for Mani Ratnam that caught my attention. This man changed Indian music forever. He brought in a western touch to carnatic music. He's the "Mozart of India".

Here's a sample of his great work, one from recent and two from the past:

BTW, Oh, Heath Ledger has to win the post-humous award for his portrayal of the Joker in the Dark Knight. Amazing work from an oustanding actor that i will truly miss.

He WON two awards at the Academy Awards and a great performance.:) Rourke didnt win. It's a shame but it went to a great actor named Sean Penn. Wonderful Heath got his Oscar. Shame he passed away before he got it. He deserved it for Brokeback Mountain as well.

I sometimes get asks why don't I do senior portraits, weddings or family photos, well the answer is "it's just not for me" I give those type of photographers credit for what they do, what they put up with and I could never arrange a family to make them look good. I would not know if a hair is out of place or if that mark on the side of your face is dirt or a birth mark.

I actually know some great portrait photographers but give me an eagle that is flying at me, a sunset that I can watch develop or a quick candid of someone I do not even know. These I can do no problem but to get someone to smile and look their best I will leave that to the professionals.

There was even a cat that was quite confident and undistracted from all the people!

Wish I could have such great portraits of people
