Burchell's (or Plains) Zebra (Equus quagga burchellii) with a characteristic shadow stripe that runs between the thicker black and white stripes. They are a southern subspecies of the plains zebra.

Our walk today took us along the banks of the River Avon. It has been a beautiful sunny day and the heather on the hills is at its most colourful. Lots to see - cows, sheep , deer and a very large sow with nine delightful piglets. We passed an old illicit still and a loch with the heathery hills reflected in its dark waters-all in all a good ramble!

This Tule elk was seen in the Elk Reserve area of Point Reyes National Seashore, California.

It has been a while since I posted an elephant photo. Here a mother elephant and her calf are having a peaceful time grazing on the African Savannah. This photo was taken in the Masai Mara in Kenya, Africa!

A solitary bison grazes in front of the Mission Mountains of Montana at the National Bison Range.

The Range was established in 1908-1910 through the efforts of several individuals, including William Hornaday and Theodore Roosevelt. Presently it maintains a herd of 250-300 bison, many of which can be traced to 4 individual orphaned calves rescued by Walking Coyote of the Pend d'Orielle tribe in 1873 or 1874 during the high season for bison extermination (Recommended Reading: "Last Stand" by Michael Punke). While the genetic diversity of the herd is very strong and a linchpin in the persistence of the species, it is sadly tainted by cattle DNA as cross-breeding was common a century ago (most bison today are hybrid bison/cattle). Nevertheless, the herd and the place in which they reside are an important piece in the history of the species.
