Biography & Artist Statement:
Erika Gentry is a Visual Artist and full-time faculty member at City College of San Francisco since 2006 and part-time since 2001. Gentry grew up in Portland, Oregon and received her BA from The University of Oregon and MFA at The School of Imaging Arts and Sciences from New York’s Rochester Institute of Technology. She serves on the National Board of Directors for The Society for Photographic Education, the advisory board of Lensculture Magazine. She is a twice-honored candidate for the CENTER’s excellence in teaching award and enjoys teaching The History of Photography as well as traditional and digital photographic processes. A self proclaimed Francophile, she exhibits and travels internationally and in Spring 2014 will spend her sabbatical as an artist in residence in Paris, France.
The concept “Ritratto Gratis” or “Free Portrait” is one I felt was fitting for the historical town of Assisi Italy, as it was inspired by the concept of selfless giving introduced by St. Francis. Around the year 1200 St. Francis, a simple church Friar from Assisi challenged the church government and society in general with a message of non-materialism and simplicity, which was eventually blessed by the Pope and embraced by his namesake order “the Franciscans”. His quote “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received–only what you have given” inspired me to photograph approximately 100 residents in and around Assisi during a summer residency and produce free 5x5 prints which they collected at the International exhibition in Assisi at the Gallery Le Logge during December 2012. As an artist practicing digital imaging and since 1996, I intentionally chose an un-manipulated and direct “on camera” view as an effort to capture the person in a minimalistic manner.
CCSF Photography and You:
I started at CCSF in 2001 in the multimedia studies department teaching basic video, web, animation and Photoshop skills. In 2006, I was hired full-time in the Photography department and helped integrate beginning photography curriculum that supports both digital and film media with digital post production tools as well as courses that allow students to integrate both in interesting ways. Throughout the years, I have shared our approach and curriculum with regional and national colleagues and it is clear that our department has been a leader along the way. Leaders in the brave new world of photographic education even through massive cuts to budgets, equipment, classes and staff hours. With more support, we could do even better.
Cultivating creativity while teaching technology and technique is not easy – but one reason why beginning, advanced and continuing students seek out our program. We are able to focus on vocational training as advised by a top notch group of Industry Advisors, as well as deliver classes needed for CSU, UC and private art school transfer.
As a graduate of both a public and private college, I fully understand the value and quality of a community college like CCSF. Teaching here and knowing that our students are getting a quality education while not accumulating tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt is liberating for them and us. I am proud of the diversity and accomplishments of our students and the opportunity to teach with passionate colleagues. Many students arrive to class coming direct from a full day of work. Some are international or ESL students, continuing education students or candidates for transfer to undergraduate programs. Some even come to develop portfolios for graduate school. Knowing that all of them – each week - are waiting for us to come and teach them is a gift that motivates me and leaves me grateful and fulfilled beyond words.
