I spent 2 days at the North Rim of Grand Canyon and it rained most of the time. I chased the lightning here for 3 hours and took over 1000 boltless photos under an umbrella during my endeavor. Trying to capture lightning without a trigger trap is a huge waste of time, but when your successful just once it makes it all the more rewarding. I tried several different setups using continuous shutter mode with long exposures and then switched to shorter exposures on slow shooting continuous mode and thought that I had failed. When I later reviewed my photos back at the campground I found that I had captured one photo with a strike included. I guess it was luck or just persistence that rewarded me. I also used a second camera to capture video of the storm and the awesome thunderstorm that accompanied the storm. I'm not sure if I will post any of the video but it was nice to have a personal record of the awesomeness of the storms the frequent the Grand Canyon.

I had been shut out for 5 nights in a row on this trip and was willing to shoot anything at this point. As I was running around to the different viewpoints on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon looking for some open sky, I rounded the corner along the drive and hit the brakes for a quickie. :) I set up one light panel quickly and snapped 3 shots then jumped back in and off I went. I used a cooler white balance than usual on this one at around 3200. :)

Happy Fence Friday!

waited in the car for hours just to get a few shots in between storms and luckily I was able to get a few pics between the heavy clouds that kept rolling up right in front of me. Not the best sunset shot but considering, I got pretty lucky to even see anything!

"Cape Final offers almost a 270° panorama over the eastern Grand Canyon, with the advantage that the viewpoint is less obscured by trees; all the scene is viewable from a single spot, so this is perhaps the best of the north rim overlooks. The point may be reached by a two mile hike on an old forest track, long since closed to all vehicles, and although the walk is easy and mostly level, few people make the trip hence the viewpoint has the added benefit of solitude." www.americansouthwest.ne

"The Grand Canyon is a famous canyon in Arizona, formed by the Colorado River. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a National Park of the United States. It is also one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and is over a mile (6000 feet) deep in places. Nearly two billion years past of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries (smaller rivers) cut their channels through layer after layer of rock.

Evidence suggests the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to the point we see it at today." wiki

Our last sunrise from the North Rim before packing up early next morning and heading to Sedona for a few days. This is looking across to the Bright Angel trail on the South Rim (still in the shade). Several years ago we day hiked down that trail to Plateau Point about 1300' above the Colorado (you can see the plateau in the sun) .... it was a beautiful hike (12.3 mi RT with about 3500' of loss and gain).

I was fortunate to experience this fiery sunset over the north rim of the Grand Canyon this past September.

I had waited for quite some time before the deck was clear out for me to take this shot without a single human being. Sometimes I like it that way without the crowd.
