Mosaic tribute to one of my favorite spots in Philadelphia - a full city block surrounded by a wall that serves as a canvas for some of the city's greatest urban artists. Graffiti is such a controversial subject and concept. I am a 50-something white woman who absolutely loves the form, am drawn to it, loves the colors and expression of it, even the anger of it when it's there. But then, as you can see by many of the photos in my stream, I am drawn the reality of deep urban living....
This wall gets painted over from time to time and new pieces of art go up and I never tire of going by it. Recently I have been sensitive to the fact that, out of respect for the artists, we not identify the location of their art. My recent posts reflect only the city where they are found, and I am trying to go back through my photos and omit locations where I put them (I suppose in my enthusiasm for how wonderful the stuff is, I stated location so that others might go find it). Though I must say that this block is kind of an unofficial official urban art space, it might not offend as much.
This location is different, now, as it has been identified in one of Philadelphia's weekly newspapers, Philadelphia Weekly, in the current issue. It seems that a developer has bought the land, at Germantown Ave. & Cecil B. More, and {gulp} townhouses are coming. Maybe it's f*cked, but I'm a little sad about this news. And I can't help but think that these creative canvases will be replaced by random tags on the walls of the new houses.
I will never think that this stuff ISN'T art - just look at the colors, the complicated design, the whimsy, the lettering, the caricature - whatever they choose to do - and much of it is actually stunning.

Located on 174th street in The Bronx. In the 1970's and 1980's the buildings here housed the meat packing industry. Just a matter of time before it is converted to apartment complexes and townhomes.

I got lucky early this morning and met graffiti artist "ROM", from New Jersey finishing up his artwork from Saturday.

In the recent protests in the city of Isfahan, system forces fired at the people with a shotgun and blinded a number of protesters!
A number of mothers who lost their children in similar protests bandaged one eye in solidarity with the injured, they have a photo of their killed child with them.
This is my mental image of what happened recently, to those who have paid an irreparable price for justice and #human dignity.

I see this wall from the train almost everyday and have waited over a year to photograph it. It was worth the wait!
