Norfolk & Western No. 611 climbs the famed Christiansburg grade near Shawsville, VA with an excursion bound for Walton, VA.
The managers parking spot needed some attention. You saw the finished picture earlier and thought I just backed in and set up camp didn't you? Bringing in gravel and using the tractor the spot was graded and leveled. One side was off almost 2 feet.
So how hard could it be to run a campground? It fell in our laps so we decided to give it a try! I will put up a series of photos of our campground life.
This is where I spent 3 months (July - early October) as a Campground manager. Seneca Shadows Campground in Seneca Rocks, West Virginia. It is in the Seneca Rocks - Spruce Knob Recreation area that is part of the Monongahela National Forest
In run 8 as the headend rolls toward the final grade crossing as they climb towards to summit of Mullan Pass. This is a fine piece of railroad I am sad to see it returned to the BNSF.

The Grade I listed church was built in 1135 with various additions since.
London Overground class 378202 climbs over the grade separated Silwood Junction, the South London line towards Clapham Junction, just to the south of Surrey Quays, on a northbound service towards Dalston Junction and Highbury & Islington.

Known as the Cathedral of the Moors, the Grade I-listed medieval church at Altarnun on Bodmin Moor has Norman origins but was largely rebuilt in the 15th century from stones from an earlier church plus unquarried stones from the moor. The font dates from Norman times and features a fierce bearded head, still with some colours remaining. The altar rail extends the full width of the church, embracing the chancel and aisles. The benches date from the 16th century, and the 79 bench ends are among the finest in Cornwall. This is considered by Simon Jenkins to be one of England's Thousand Best Churches.

This is a Grade II* listed building according to Historic England which is a fine C18 town house with some good internal details, one of the finest of a series which mark Poole's greatest period of prosperity. It is now used as an office.
The CSX RF&P heritage unit came across the Bowline on on M650-22 two days ago. The very next day the CSX MONON heritage unit came through on M210-22. I was able to capture them both in virtually the same location!
- www.kevin-palmer.com - I've seen fogbows before, but they are so transient they're difficult to capture. The fog must be just the right thickness with the sun at just the right angle. The fog was moving around so much it changed by the second. This was on Red Grade Road in the Bighorn Mountains.
I taught a 5th and 6th grade photography class at Escuela Integrada a couple of weeks ago while in Guatemala. My group brought and donated a dozen cameras (most of them brand new canon elf 180's). It was amazing how good the students were with just twenty minutes of instruction!

Still tackling the steep 2.8% average "Camelback Grade" westbound into Canton, North Carolina, Blue Ridge Southern's 4 pack of EMD's thunder up the former Southern Railway Murphy Branch.
In 1961, the first vice-chancellor of the UEA, Frank Thistlethwaite, had approached architect Denys Lasdun, an adherent of the "New Brutalist" trend in architecture, who was at that time building Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge, to produce designs for the permanent campus. Lasdun presented a model and an outline plan at a press conference in April 1963, but it took another year to produce more detailed plans, which diverged considerably from the model. As a result, the first buildings did not open until late-1966.
Lasdun moved the teaching and research functions into a single 460-metre (1,510-foot) long concrete block following the contour of the site. A walkway was built alongside the teaching wall, providing access to its various entrances, with frontage roads running below. Attached to the southern side of the walkway, six linked blocks of terraced accommodation residences were constructed to appear as one structure. The residences became known as the "Ziggurats" and were designed by Lasdun to recall "vineyards in France or a rocky outcrop on a slope".
The 80 car SU-99 heads westbound through Newfoundland with three SD60s pulling hard to maintain track speed. Newfoundland was home of Finbar in the 2003 movie "The Station Agent".
Union Railroad (URR) MP15DC no.s 12 and 26 are seen crossing Grant Ave Extension - one of few public grade crossings on the railroad - as they haul a train of gondolas south to the US Steel Co. Irvin Works.

On a spring afternoon with the trees still budding out, a SD70ACC drags 378 by the signals at Trammells. At the top of a decent grade for eastern Alabama that peaks at 1.25%, in steam days the Central of Georgia often kept a pusher stationed in Sylacauga to help shove heavy eastbounds up the hill to here. This is also the spot where going east traffic control changes and is handled by track warrants with automatic block signals the rest of the way to Columbus. Going west to Leeds is CTC installed to handle the deluge of World War Two traffic, not only from through freights but also to the large ammunition plant that was located at Childersburg.
And yes, that signal on the right is actually leaning like that. Don't use it as a guide for making a level shot!
Union Pacifc ET44AH 2686 leads a train uphill with the help of UP 6236, a patched Southern Pacific unit.
The Saluda Grade is the steepest standard-gauge mainline railway in the USA and opened in July 1878. The three mile railway grade ranged from 3.7%- 4.7%.
The railway line was constructed to connect Spartanburg, South Carolina, Asheville and North Carolina through the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has been out of service since 2001.
Since 2001 the vibrant green vegetation around the railway has started to rapidly grow over the tracks and in some sections completely engulfed the railway. Beneath some of the railway it has been heavily eroded, which has caused many railway ties to become detached from the railway lines.
