The common dolphin is the name given to two species (and possibly a third) of dolphin making up the genus Delphinus.
Prior to the mid-1990s, most taxonomists only recognised one species in this genus, the common dolphin Delphinus delphis. Modern cetologists usually recognise two species — the short-beaked common dolphin, which retains the systematic name Delphinus delphis, and the long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus capensis.
The common dolphin is not the dolphin of popular imagination despite its name; that distinction belongs to the bottlenose dolphin due to its widespread use in marine parks and its appearance in the television series Flipper.However, this dolphin was the most frequently represented in the art and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.

Some days are just perfect. After a. wonderful boat trip into Loch Coruisk and a. great walk to the ridge of Bidean. At Troup Head you can get very close to these charismatic nesting seabirds. they are gorgeous birds to see up close, so gracefull in the air & those eyes are piercing. Had a super day there with some good Norfolk weather I took up with me (seem to have left it there as Scotland is good this week & Norfolk terrible!). 3 more portraits in comments section with comments disabled but can be viewed large.

Between the end of September and mid-October, hundreds of thousands of snow geese are flying in from the Great North, they make a brief stopover (about 3 weeks) before taking off for their wintering grounds along the U.S. coasts. The snow goose population has tripled over the past 20 years and continues to grow at a rate of five percent a year. It now stands at over 4.5 million breeding birds.

We got down to the lake just in time for the sunset and snapped some pics in the soft evening glow. Then we bundled up and waited for the stars and city lights to come out while leaving the tripod in the exact same spot, taking more photos into the evening. This picture is actually 4 images composed together to achieve the day and night effect

The ruff is a medium-sized wading bird. It has a long neck, a small head, a rather short slightly droopy bill and medium-long orange or reddish leg. In flight it shows a faint wing-stripe and oval white patches either side of the tail. It breeds in a very few lowland sites in eastern England, and it appears that numbers are dropping. It is a migrant but in the UK some birds are present all year round. Many young birds from Scandinavia visit the UK in late summer, then migrating on to Africa.

This place is so surreal now. I'm actually sat relatively high up, well higher that it looks. The bracken is now taller than me for the most part. It's like being in some weird, slightly less impressive, english rainforest. At least when it's stupidly hot it feels like that :p
I also had forgotten about the joy of bug bites. I look like someone gave a 3 year old a permanent marker to colour me in with. What sort of antisocial bugs bite you right along the forehead for goodness sake.
