I loaned Will my GiSTEQ GPS logger while he was visiting. I didn't realize he had it on during this fishing trip until I dumped the GPS track file for him. It was a happy accident as it allows us to see and document the disaster.
- We booked a salmon fishing charter with Jerry, but at the last minute Jerry told the charter company to send us out with his brother Jack.
- Jack had a 22' foot Hewescraft with a soft top and a single 90 H.P. outboard. We should have never even stepped foot on it but we wanted to fish. His boat was too small and underpowered to take 4 people, plus himself, out into the weather and heavy chop in the Sound that day. Hell, it was probably underpowered to take the 4 of us out on a clear day.
- Jack told us he wasn't much of a fisherman, but his plan was to follow his brother to good fishing.
- He couldn't keep his boat on step without running at full throttle. As a result, before we even reached Pigot Point he was talking about not having enough fuel on board and needing to get some gas from his brother to be able to get back.
- Just past Pigot Point he realizes he may not be able to reach his brother and so he decides to take us somewhere closer to fish.
- Shortly after changing course, we point out that he has an oil leak and most of the deck is covered in green oil. He has us mop up most of the oil, then scrub the deck with soap and then wash it into the bilge to be pumped into the Sound. While we're doing this, we're drifting in circles near the NOAA weather buoy.
- He later asked Will to delete the video he had of the oil spill because he didn't want to risk getting a fine from the Coast Guard. Uncharacteristically Will deleted the video.
- When we get back underway after the oil spill we're heading in the opposite direction we should be and we run for over a mile before Jack realizes it.
- Jack decides to take us to a another, even closer place to fish - the hatchery on Esther Island - because fuel is even more of an issue now and the chop is getting much heavier.
- While running towards Esther Island we encounter some large waves and we nose into one that goes over the entire boat. At this point Jack turns around and heads back to Whittier.
- After retracing our path back towards Whittier, Jack goes into Shotgun Cove and ties us to the old mooring buoy to fish. He claims this is a great spot because a commercial shrimper just cleaned 52,000 pounds of shrimp here the week before. He claims there will be some monster halibut there. * cough * cought * BULLSHIT! He really just wanted us to get our hooks wet so that he could say we fished and get paid.
- Will caught a sculpin. The rest of us caught the same Pacific cod three of four times. Anytime no one was looking at a rod Jack would yell "Hey, you've got a bite on that rod there!" to try to fool us into thinking there were really fish there.
- After standing in the rain and drowning bait for about an hour we finally headed back to Whittier.
Your teen driver is excited to be driving by themselves for the first time, but as a parent, you are concerned about their safety and nervous about them driving by themselves for the first time. If you are in this scenario, you should look into a spy GPS tracking that can help assure you that your teen driver is where you want them to be at all times.

Presenting... the Critical Mass GPS track!
You can interact with the map. I made this map with a Geosat DG-100, a device that logs GPS locations. Unlike a typical GPS unit, this does not tell you anything except through its USB port, but makes up for it by having a huge memory and great battery life. You turn it on, toss it in your bag, and forget about it.
