Possibly the 'upside' of the never-ending 'development' of London - the dredgers and other carriers taking building material up river - is the removal and disposal of 'spoil' from any digging involved. Over the time my photographs have been taken there have been at least 2 major projects underway, "CrossRail" (now the Elizabeth Line) and the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a sewer tunnel, complete, apparently and due to become operation this new year. Both involved digging and tunneling so a lot of dirt and chalk to be put somewhere else, which is what the tug GPS India is doing, pushing a barge down river to where it can be emptied and used for something else.
GPS India is rounding a 'bend' in the River Thames, named Tilbury Ness: its exiting the short stretch of the River Thames called Norhtfleet Hope which hosts the entrance to Tilbury Docks - called Tilbury Lock, what else ? - and a series of cranes and silos (containers and dry cargoes) on one bank, smaller industrial sites on the other - and entering Gravesend Reach, a longer stretch which is either part of the Thames Estuary or part of it...
Greater London, on the south bank, begins beyond the boundaries of the Borough of Dartford, 'east of London' on the other side of the border. East of London still 'serves' London to a great extent and heading down Gravesend Reach is no exception - east of Gravesend is agricultural and marsh land, flood plains, while across the river there are endless landfill sites (and these begin in east London) being covered over and made into things like nature parks or, more ambitiously, attempts at restoring marsh land and the wildlife habitats associated with marshes...
I don't know exactly where the load GPS India is taking down river is going, but most likely to one of these 'renewal' sites.
GPS India was launched in 1958 and rebuilt in 2012; I don't know if it's worked anywhere other than the Thames but it's a regular sight, along with other GPS vessels, in its orange livery, in all weathers. Here, it's in high summer, today (4 January 2025) the weather is cloudy, near freezing but dry, with heavy rain due...it's at Woolwich.

Wet and misty on the River Thames at Gravesend.
GPS Marine operates a fleet of tugs and other boats on the River Thames and elsewhere. Here are, I think, 6 of them, GPS India detached from the group, then GPS India, Illyria, Iberia, Ionia and (I think) Battler (a multicat...) and one other. Most of the group are moored at Gravesend Town Pier pontoon. I don't know why...

I can't find the exact date this was built, but either 1955 or 1958. Built in the Netherlands and had a refit in 2012. For what it's worth, I 'approve' heartily of keeping older vessels going: it's over 60 years now and still working as hard as tugs do.
GPS move a lot of stuff up and down the river: I've mentioned before they brought the 'spoil' from Crossrail (and, I think, the Thames Tideway project) down river to cover over landfill sites. GPS has a fleet of tugs and other vessels so a frequent sight here (and on the Medway, as they're based there, at Upnor...).
