This unique car has two glorious yet distinctle different strands to its history, and is the car that propelled Britains first World Champion Driver, from novice to one of the hottest properties in Motor Sport in a single season.
The story starts in 1951 with Leslie Hawthorn convinced of his sons abilities to make his mark in Motorsport, the first problem to overcome would be Mikes stature, most of his contemporary British drivers took their first steps in Formula 500 were the a drivers weight was crucial, think Moss, Brookes ect who were whippet like, then think Mike Hawthorn. so Leslie and Mike had no option than start in Formula Two, following tests with HWM and Connaught they approached Charlie and John Cooper. They had built three Bristol powered cars for Jimmy Richmonds stable, when Leslie and a freind Bob Chase commissioned the building of a fourth car for Mike Hawthorn. for the 1952 season. Leslie Hawthorn put together a crew and the car was ready shortly before opening Goodwood weekend.for which the Hawthorn arrived with their new car still unpainted, straight from the off Hawthorn was on the pace and his three races resulted in two wins, one ahead of Fangio in another Cooper and a 2nd place behing Froilan Gosalves in a Ferrari. Two more victories the following weekend at Silverstone ahead of Jean Behra and a retirement in the third race with gearbox problems. Then a victory at Borham and second place at Dunrod before his first European race and a 4th place in Belgian GP at Spa. He took part in another borrowed Cooper Bristol in the French GPat Reims finishing 7th. Back in his own car for Silverstone where the Cooper finished third behind the Ferraris of Alberto Ascari and Piero Taruffi. Onto the Dutch GP at Zandvort, he qualified on the front row of the three car width grid alongside the might of the Ferraris of Alerto Ascari and Guiseppe Farina, Enzo Ferrari sat up and took notice. So much so that come the Italian Grand Prix at Monza won by Ascari, Hawthorn was invited to for Ferrari followed shortly afterwards by an invitation to join the team. Credit to Hawthorn who went onto to become the 1958.World Drivers Championship, but also to this diminutive single sat Cooper-Bristol
The by now famous car was later loaned to Duncan Hamilton and it suffered a catastrophic engine failure, as it would not be competitive for the following season, it was decided to transform it to a two seater sportscar, using the original chassis and a body designed by Bernie Rogers and built by Wakefield and Son, it was fitted with a Bristol engine identical to its earlier unit producing almost 140bhp. and speeds of up to 220 kmp (138 mph). So began its second career
Road registered HPN 665 and entrusted to Alan Brown it finished 2nd in the Goodwood 9 hour and took a class win at Silverstone. Onto 1954 and victory in the British Empire Trophy at Oulton Park, a class win at Zandvoort. After that it passed through a number of hands and competed in various forms of the Sport before being bought back by Alan Brown in the 1960's.in the 1980's it was owned by Jeremy Agace followed by D R Jamieson
And onto its third career in Historics sometimes in the hands of Gregor Fisken it has taken part in a large number of events including the Mille Miglia
A very accomplished car
Many thanks for a fantabulous
