A Fox River Valley Railroad freight crosses the long bridge over thin ice atop Little Lake Butte des Morts at Menasha, Wisconsin, on a cold November 18, 1989. All three of FRVR’s EMD GP30s—Nos. 814, 815 and 820—along with GP35 No. 831, obviously all former Chicago & North Western locomotives, power the northbound train. Unfortunately, unless you want to walk or cycle across this bridge, this part of the C&NW line to Green Bay is abandoned onto the bridge and north, now called the “Friendship Trail.”

A westbound Santa Fe vehicle train rushes through Leeds, Illinois, on April 16, 1994. AT&SF No. 2751 has put on a few miles between Chicago and California, and looks it—but it was sure nice to see a GP30 out on the high iron with tonnage in 1994.

An EX BN GP30 leads L-CHI102 West through Verona IL on the Chillicothe Sub

Soo Line EMD GP30 No. 716 leads Soo train 17 westbound at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of June 7, 1987. The view is along Mount Vernon Avenue not far west of Milwaukee’s Amtrak Station.

Santa Fe’s 301 train, a Kansas City to Chicago mainline local, rolls along a trackside pond approaching Leeds, Illinois, on May 30, 1992. An all-EMD line up behind lead EMD GP30 No. 2772 includes a GP7u, GP35, GP39-2 and another GP7u for power.

Soo Line train 11, powered by EMD GP30 Nos. 716 and 703, slowly moves west toward Duplainville, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of July 26, 1987. As the train approaches the Springdale Road grade crossing, Amtrak’s westbound Empire Builder pops into view and passes the freight on the eastbound main.

Wisconsin Central was a friendly railroad to be around with a camera. I frequently wandered around the engine facility, as well as locomotive and car shop at North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin—or “Shops” as it was commonly called. Sometimes it was on an officially sanctioned tour, but many times it wasn’t, and I don’t ever recall being asked to leave. It probably didn’t hurt that I occasionally bought a WC sweatshirt out of the merchandise closet from one of the managers. The one thing I do remember is how dark and sooty it was inside most of the steam-era buildings, especially when using Kodachrome 64 and 200 to photograph interiors. I did what I could with the tools of the day.

On October 8, 1994, WC EMD GP30 No. 815, acquired from the merger with Fox River Valley railroad, is about to head into the roundhouse on the wheel track, equipped with a drop pit and wheel lathe. One track over, WC SW9 No. 1231 slumbers the day away.

A family is out ice fishing on a frozen Neenah Slough, as Wisconsin Central train 65 passes by in the background on the day after Christmas in 1994. Train 65 has EMD GP30 No. 713, a former Soo Line unit equipped with AAR type B trucks from an Alco trade-in, and former Milwaukee Road EMD SDL39 No. 590.

Ohio Central GP30 4218 spots a hopper at Boltaron in Newcomerstown, Ohio, on May 31, 2019. This was the end of a very "maroon" day on the OC, after chasing 4027 and 4022/4024 bracketing a loaded coal train from Zanesville to Conesville (posted a couple photos ago), then finding some luck on my way home and catching the evening Coshocton job going to Newcomerstown before sunset. One of just a couple times I ever caught the 4218, and the only time I've seen a train at this industry.

The first days of Wisconsin Central where a scramble of getting trains over the railroad and enough power to do so. On November 7, 1987, almost a month after startup, WC combined train 2/20 heads south through Duplainville, Wisconsin. Early WC locomotive consists were colorful too—this freight is all-EMD powered by former Soo Line GP30 No. 708 leading a pair of leased Conrail GP35s, a Soo Line GP9, a WC SD45 still in former Burlington Northern green and a former Milwaukee Road GP20.

Indiana Northeastern EMD GP30 No.2185 head east over County Road K as they head towards NS to interchange cars.

N&W GP30 #2906 (former NKP #906), is leading an EB NS train through State Line Junction, in Hammond, IN. State Line Tower can be seen off to the right. This was the first NS train I ever shot. Shot taken on 3-2-1985

Soaking up some of the last sunlight of the day, Soo Line train 11 and its pair of GP30s throw exhaust into the sky while topping the grade at Byron, Wisconsin, on July 26, 1987.

Westbound Southern freight train No. 89 rolls through the Shenandoah Valley near Maurertown, VA on Oct. 3, 1977 with GP38-2 No. 5223 and a GP30.

Georgia Central Railroad U23B #3957 & LTEX GP30 #2435 lead GC train L784 through Bellville, GA with international containers from the port of Savannah. Georgia Central would hand this train off to the HOG at Vidalia where they'd take it to the inland port at Cordele along interstate 75. Friend Larry Smoak and I made the day trip south for this short lived operation.

Rio Grande 3015, 3003, and 3007 pull 35 loads of coil and plate from nearby Geneva Steel at Lakota Junction, Utah the afternoon of Feb. 6, 1994. The various elements that make up the photo appear more like the 1960s than the 1990s.

A former Great Northern GP30 leads Laurel to Great Falls train no. 209 as it heads upgrade out of the Yellowstone River valley north of Laurel. The 2213 went on to be re-built as GP39M 2814. I had been dispatching out of Billings for all of a month. Wildfire smoke was wreaking havoc with the Big Sky that afternoon.

Burlington Northern train 4 curves out of Rochelle, Illinois, on the morning of April 6, 1991. Still looking like a GP30 as EMD intended when built in February 1963, only it was built as Cotton Belt No. 5007, and rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen into BN GP39M No. 2803. Regardless, it still sure looks good.

Even after Union Pacific’s merger of Southern Pacific, for several years, locomotives for the West local out of Denver on the Moffat Tunnel route was a pair of Rio Grande GP30s. At that point, they ran west on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I tried to capture them as much as I could. Only problem is that the local rarely ventured west of Rocky and Rocky Spur and into the mountains. On January 6, 1998, that was going to change. A crew on an eastbound UP freight died on their hours of service at Plainview, and it was decided that the West local would head up to Plain light engines to bring the train down to Rocky where they’d send a van out to pick up the crew. Finally, a chance to get the GP30s in some mountain scenery! In this view, the train, led by venerable Rio Grande GP30 Nos. 3006 and 3003, has just exited Tunnel 1 just east of Plainview, Colorado, and is rolling downgrade in fresh snow and afternoon sun.

I grew up along Southern's Manassas-Harrisonburg Branch, better known as the "B Line," in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. While the eastern portion of the line, between Manassas and Riverton Junction has been elevated to main line status, this portion further west at Woodstock is out of service and has been rail-banked. On Nov. 28, 1971, westbound No. 35 is parked while the crew has dinner at the local Tastee Freeze, located out of the picture to the right. The consist was GP30's No's. 2583 and 2609 and 19 cars.

A westbound Santa Fe manifest, powered by a half-dozen GP30’s and GP35’s, passes over the track that it will soon occupy after it navigates the Tehachapi Loop.

Beating the rush for Thirsty Thursday. Here WC GP30 2252 leads train 18 (Wausau to Point turn) travels down the Valley Subdivision and across the Wisconsin River. Trailing is an ex- MoPac GP35m and a former Southern Pacific SW1500. I had been an employee of the Whoopie Cushion for all of 3 days.

Santa Fe train No. 807, the Barstow-based ‘Cadiz Turn’, rolls eastward through Ludlow, California the morning of April 9, 1993. The 16-car train will be interchange delivered to the Arizona & California Railroad at Cadiz, California.

A Santa Fe Railway B23-7 and GP30 combo pull a local freight through North Guam, New Mexico the afternoon of Oct. 6, 1995. The 53 car train will soon cross the Continental Divide on Campbell Pass (Gonzales), at 7244 feet above sea level.

Such a delight to see this gem from long ago, this was my first trip to the Denfield Rd. overpass west of London, Ontario. We affectionately called it "trolls bridge" named after the unruly homeowner on the south side of the bridge who thought it was his private bridge and hated photographers. Here we find a Canadian Pacific candy faced GP30 5000 leading a pair of GP35's with the first section of a train westbound back on June 21, 1975.

Westbound Southern No. 35 eases through Edinburg, VA on April 2, 1972 with two GP30s. I grew up here and, during my high school and college years, unloaded many a ton of feed via the ramp sticking out in the lower right side of the image.

Backing into concentrator.

GP30's were for the Great Falls train that was routed Garrison to Helena and then North. The former line before the Burlington Northern merger is the tangent going off in the distance. Its final move as the pit advanced.

Note the lack of buildings now as they are slowly removed for pit expansion.(Compare with the last post).

Soo Line train 11 meets train 18 at Rugby, Wisconsin, late in the afternoon of July 26, 1987. Train 11 is led by Soo EMD SD40 No. 780, while a pair of EMD GP30s built in 1963 powers train 11.

B&O GP30 #6914, is leading an EB B&O train at Dolton, IL on 1-26-1985. This is the first GP30 I had ever seen in person. Having only been shooting slides for a couple months, and only having interest in trains for about a year, coming to Dolton, IL was an amazing place to visit. The variety of railroads, you could see was unbelievable, especially for someone that had only seen the Milwaukee Road, Soo Line, and the C&NW. This was my 2nd or 3rd visit to the area.

With a nice array of locomotives ranging from a GP30 carbody to SD60Ms, even a GP60B, BNSF's L-CHI664 local is grinding uphill here on the edge of Biggsville, IL. The lead motor is BNSF 2740, an EMD GP39E still retaining its 1963-built GP30 carbody. It was built for the Great Northern railroad as unit 3007. We were standing on an old wooden bridge, out of service to road traffic. We could sure tell why though, as the bridge was in a very serious condition.

Rio Grande GP30s No. 3013, 3011, and 3004 depart Provo Yard with train No. 663 on a crystal clear Jan. 8, 1989 afternoon in Utah Valley.

JJL and I made a trip down to the Carolinas in search of shortlines and while we worked hard we were successful knocking off a couple on the bucket list. GP30 #4202 originall was originally built for the Santa Fe and is in charge of the run to Pelzer where the interchange with the CSX will be made.

With 5 SF/BNSF GP30's in tow.

Although I do like the EMD GP30, due to my age and the demesne of the "30" during my growing years as a rail fan, I have failed to collect very many shots of that model. I do however happen to have quite a few of the Alco C430 which happened to become a regular locomotive for power on the line that I lived along. So, going along with a 430 should pass for the day. By this time in May of 1994, the Susquehanna 430's were pretty much regulated to the northern division branch lines to live out the rest of their life. The yard in downtown Norwich, NY has given way to black top on both sides and all that remains is the main track as NYS&W BH1 heads north with traffic bound for the Sangerfield area.

It looks like a hot July afternoon as Lonnie is atop the East Creek road bridge west of Bardwell, while he catches this westbound working up a froth with GP30 1003 and GP40 2071 heading towards Janesville. Happy Thanksgiving to all fellow Flickr photographers.

Pens long abandoned in the New Mexico desert see the occasional passage of Southwestern Railroad's former Santa Fe GP30s. On this Friday the SW ran a work train from the former ATSF line from Hanover to Deming and back, here seen returning through Whitewater. After trial and error with Wednesday's work train at this spot, I knew exactly where I needed to be to perfectly frame the single GP30 here the next time, and I could not be happier with the result.

East Local out of Amarillo with a Kodachrome GP30 up front meeting a westbound 338 led appropriately enough by an SF30C. Happy 30 Thursday!

Southbound J770. September 9, 1994.

Rio Grande GP30 3013, SD40T-2 5372 (new at the time), and Steam Generator Car 250 lead a once in a lifetime Rio Grande Zephyr consist along the Soldier Creek Line Change at Detour, Utah on a glorious Oct. 5, 1975 morning in Spanish Fork Canyon.

This January day in 1975 was one of those days you head out hoping to shoot in the snow. We got a little wet snow and that was it. Here we find southbound Southern mixed train No. 7, the "Lynchburg Special," rounding the curve in downtown Faber, VA with the usual four GP units, a FP7A, a coach and the TOFC cars. The agency at Faber had been closed at the time, replaced by "mobile agents" in vans. The station would linger for a couple years before being demolished. There once was a thriving pulpwood business. That also is gone.

Baltimore & Ohio GP30 No. 6974 leads an eastbound coal drag through the S-curve at Kessler, WV on Aug. 2, 1976.

Union Pacific’s West Local, powered by Rio Grande GP30 Nos. 3002 and 3006, works Rocky Spur above an eastbound coal train led by Southern Pacific GE AC4400CW No. 267, that is tied down in Rocky siding, on February 19, 1998. Only four of Rio Grande’s 28 GP30s ever received large billboard lettering on the long hood during repaints.

The Prairie Line GP30 # 2007 poses beneath SW1200 # 1206 and SW1500 # 1002. at AB brewery in St Louis, MO. Nov 3rd 2020. Thanks to the owners of the RR for the set up.

A Rio Grande GP30 leads the Midvale Tramp local into Lead Mine near Copperton, Utah on Oct. 2, 1993. While the train is slight, it is climbing on a steady 3.35% grade. Sadly, none of the visible infrastructure exists today.

Rust-bucket GP30 #717 leads a short train No. 3 through the siding at Junction City, Wis., on April 17, 1987.

The Soo's GP30s had seen a quarter century of hard service by this time. All of these units went to the Wisconsin Central in October 1987, with some still operating into the mid-1990s.

F45-SD45-GP30 combo on what looks to be train 63, the Point to South Itasca local freight. I didn't write it on the slide other than Spring 2001. I probably didn't write it down as I was pretty pissed about the quality of K25 film and what was one of my last rolls of film processed by Kodak. The color was pretty crappy but little did I know that I would be scanning and manipulating it 18 years later....Fuji film was next.
