Picture of my Muscat trip 2010 in Oman // Bild meiner Maskat-Reise 2010 im Oman
So this happened. Here's how:
We met up with Wired writer Neal Pollack in Austin during SXSW who trailed team foursquare for a few days. Neal wrote a pretty great piece which is in the July 2010 issue of Wired UK. (this cover / story won't be in the US version of Wired). You can read the whole story here:
www.wired.co.uk/wired-magazine/archive/2010/07/features/b...
When we got back to NYC, we ended up doing a photo shoot w/ Brett Humphreys at Larry Lawrence in Williamsburg. They insisted on Larry Lawrence because of a similar shoot they had done w/ Josh Williams and crew in Austin and wanted to pair the photos up side by side (both bars have similar looking decor). They asked us to round up 20 of our friends and head out to Brooklyn on a random weekday afternoon, so we got on the Twitter and tried our best to create a mini flashmob. The photo came out great and side-by-side they're even better. Take a look:
www.flickr.com/photos/dpstyles/4663478911/
About a week after the shoot, the editor of Wired UK called and asked if we wanted to be on the cover. So I went over to a studio in the West Village, met up with Jill Greenberg (the photographer. she was great... and also shot Soraya's awesome Fast Company cover) and this is the end result. There was a stylist (that's not my shirt!) and a make-up person (I got a free haircut!)... and a bunch of crowns. 95% of the shots were no crown ("no way am I wearing that thing") though we did a few with in on... and I guess crown won. So be it. To be honest, I thought the crown was more of a prop for the foursquare "mayor" thing... I didn't really think it was a "King of Social Media" thing (does anyone really believe that... come'on, people!)
Anyway, not to nerd out, but this is the stuff that Little Denny College dreamed big about back in 1997 (for real)... so I'm pretty happy with it :)

Oh, some words of wisdom to anyone that finds themselves thrown into the Land of Photoshoots:
#1. I can totally see how photographers get people to do crazy things in photoshoots. Um, remember all the startups that we're featured in NYMag swinging from ropes (Lessin!), doing cartwheels (MSG!), wheeling themselves across the floor (Karp!). You're taking a bunch of photos and it's like "do this, and this, and this, and try this..." and you just go with it. Sometimes it's "okay, stand this way... now this way... hands in pocket... hood up... hood down... hood up! chin up... oh yes" and you get something like this (gangster!) Anyway, just saying that I can see how it happens.
#2. I spoke at a conference in Munich called DLD. At the end of the conference they did photoshoots with the speakers and asked us to do all sorts of weird stuff. They didn't tell us what the photos were for so we just went along with it... me and @MSG jumping in the air and flexing and just doing stupid stuff. Anyway, don't ever do that. Especially if you don't know what they're for. Turns out DLD sells those pics... and one of me mock-flexing (stoopid, stoopid Dennis) showed up in Billboard magazine in some story about foursquare. Don't take pics and sign the rights away unless you know what they're going to be used for. This is really lame of DLD too.
#3. When I told my friends about the crown they were like "oh no - you need a publicist!". I think that's overkill, but bring a friend with you that can tell you whether you are taking it a little too far. Having a friend / PR rep / etc that was like "dude, don't put the crown on" may have been helpful in retrospect :) I guess the lesson is that you don't have to do whatever the crew tells you to do. This sounds so super obvious, but like the "hood up, hood down" example, it doesn't really seem obvious at the time.
Anyway, if this saves one person from wearing a [crown, life jacket, feather boa, fake moustache] on the cover of [Wired, TV Guide, Ranger Rick, Highlights] then my work is done!

ps2: Yes, I am wearing some makeup (they made me!) but I think my luscious lips and forearms are photoshopped. @ChrisFaile thinks I have the complexion of a Ken Doll (thx) and, no @msquinn, I am not wearing lipstick. I think they may have photshopped my Disco Stu haircut to look nicer too. Thanks! :)
The location based social networking space (LBSN) fascinates me. And with the arrival of Facebook Places the space is going to heat up fast.
But when I first set out to discover the ideal LSBN for my lifestyle it was a difficult process. There were a few comparison guides between Foursquare and Gowalla but nothing that covered all of the major players in the space. Therefore the process (at least for me) took several weeks and several experiments with each of the Tier 1 LBSN’s.
Well instead of making you suffer through the same process, I decided to make an infographic decision guide matrix for you in order to help you decide which LBSN to use.

What's a geek wedding without a geeky identity and letterpressed card (oh, and also a Gowalla spot, thanks guys!)?
Printed by the wonderful Jozias (who also did my business cards)
Article isn't online yet, but @litmanlive sent me these scans: www.wired.co.uk/

I got here just a little bit to late to grab the shot I was hoping for, so I had to settle for the little guy on the right....hehe!

Taken with my iPhone and uploaded to the Gowalla mobile location service for the restaurant Starbucks Coffee.

Was raining again this evening so i decided to give my camera a break from the rain, awaiting my op/tech rain sleeves..
Hopfully the weather picks up again soon though, got a few ideas and places i want to go and shoot, just a bit puf off with none of my stuff being waterproof. humph.
Okay, I seem to be taking photos of cups in restaurants now.

I took this one this evening in Trafalgar Square. Been meaning to head over there to try and get some shots for a while now.
This was taken on the right hand side set of fountains, a 3 shot HDR, only about the 5th or so I've tried.
I took a couple other shots around the fountains and even though it was a pretty still evening a bunch of them came out with water all over the lens! So, they didn't work out as well as planned.. :)
Anyway, pretty chuffed with how this one's come out, still some artifacts left over from the merging in Photomatix on the left side that i missed in processing afterwards, but they're not that noticeable.
Alright so I am still very much in love with my iPhone and have now had it for almost one month. As some of you may have noticed (Or tried not to), I've been busy snapping with it too.
I really can't praise it enough! I literally can't do without it, I love love LOVE it!.
Ahem...anyway I went on a site where people have put up screencaptures of their iPhone homescreens and explained why they have those particular apps on their homescreen. And joining the bandwagon I thought I'd do the same! Hopefully my explanations might intriuge those into downloading "said" apps.
---
I'll go row by row Left to Right
Messages Default
Well what it says really, its the original default location of the app and its for texting (Duh!) I'm a closet OCD so I leave it there.
Calender Default
Again...what it says really, I haven't moved this since its actually pretty handy, it refreshes itself everyday, so if I do suddenly forget the date, its right there.
Hipstamatic Paid
Alright! Now we're moving on! I LOVE this app, it sits here because I use it far too often and aesthetically I like it beside the smelly normal camera. app. It's just genius, it turns the screen into one of those lomo cameras - you then swipe to change lenses, film and flashes and snap away. The genius of it is, it's just so easy to use and great for a photographer wannabe like me. You get a set of default lenses and film once you first get it, but you can let the collection grow by shopping for more lenses. Altogether you'll probably end up paying around a fiver (£5.00) for the lot which isn' too bad.
You can then view your pics, upload to flickr, e-mail etc. Its a great app and I really recommend it!
Camera Default
Its not really a camera...its a portal to another universe!!!
No its just a camera
Photos Default
Well I HAVE to view my pictures instantly once I've snapped or edited them so its handy to just leave the icon where it is really!
WhatsApp Paid
Very very handy app for me, its basically like the BlackBerry messenger service but on iPhone. There are so many out there, the genius of this one, is that it automatically scans my Contacts and tells me who has this App installed, then literally I can start chatting away and for a one off 59p.
Though many argue that "Ping!" is much better (It uses Usernames rather than Phone Numbers) WhatsApp is a messenger service between iPhones AND BlackBerry's and I tend to chat to my sister a lot (Who has a BlackBerry) and its far simpler to launch the app and start IM'ing straight away.
iDraw Dialer Paid, initially Free
OK...this was an impulse, "Look I have money to spend" app that I just bought cause I thought the icon was cute. Basically instead of going through your contacts and finding the person you want to ring. iDraw allows you to DRAW a memorable image and then it automatically rings the person associated with that image. Its fairly silly but I love it, and easy too as I tend to remember useless things anyway. It allows you to save 3 contacts on the Free version and then for 59p you basically can put as many people as you want.
Let me reiterate, you don't actually save any time, it takes exactly the same amount of time to search your contacts and ringing them as does this app. It's just cool to draw a line and it recognises I want to ring Theodora who lives in Barbados. I use it quite a bit so it deserved a place on the homescreen
Gowalla Free
So I'm still an iPhone n00b, I need to get back to you on this! Its basically some sort of ongoing scavenger game hunt thing. Using the GPS it finds your location and tells you of nearby restaurants or coffee shops etc. And you go there and "check in" you get a little pin and say "I've been here!" there is a list of people have been there before you...and I'm guessing the idea is to get a lot of these "pins". I installed this yesterday, and have one pin so far! Go me!
PS Mobile Free
Your very very vyer basic scaled down version of Photoshop...I love it and if I'm waiting for a delayed train (As always) I can just launch the app and start playing around. No problems thus far.
Mill Colour Free
I haven't used this yet! I only installed it yesterday, another photo editing program for le iPhone apparently very genius...We'll see.
Facebook Free
DO I really need to explain? I use this ALOT so it stays on the homescreen.
RTM Initially Free...then you must PAY!
"RTM" - Remember The Milk" is one of many task manager type apps. I'm going through the trial at the moment, basically it saves me from wasting post it notes. I type what I need to do this time next week and when the time comes round it tells me to do it. I have a fairly good memory anyway, so I tend to already remember what I have to do...I just installed it because I thought having a cow on the homescreen was awesome.
Tweetdeck Free
One of the best and my personal favourite Twitter clients. And its free! The GUI is a beaut and so easy to use.
Echofon Free
Trying to branch out of Tweetdeck, and awaiting for Tweetie to become free. This is yet another Twitter client, only difference is you can search for "Nearby tweets". I really don't like the GUI though
If you don't understand this Twitter malarky then GET ON IT!
Flickr Free
HAS to be on the Homescreen! I use it everyday, and I can upload pics through it too...Genius
Flickit Free
OK maybe not too genius, this app is literally only to upload pics to Flickr. I like this cause I can select many things at once to do...for example, to submit photos to Groups, the app produces a list and I can select as many as I want and upload it straight away (Unlike the Flickr app) ONLY problem is, if you make a mistake...you WILL have to go and edit it through your laptop/computer.
---
So the "System Row" as I call it is the same as when I first got it EXCEPT I have replaced the "iPod" icon with "Settings" as I am always playing around with 3G, Wireless Networks and Keyboards. I did have a crazy moment where I replaced "Safari" with "Opera Mini"(A much faster web browser) but it turned out that I'm an Apple nut so put it back again and apologised.
I already have a beautiful 3rd Gen iPod Nano with music on it already which I carry with me so my iPhone only stores VITAL albums. So if I must listen to music, all I need to do is double click the "Home" button (The circle thing with a square) and it automatically launches my iPod :)
---
And there you have it! This was fun...
