Many elections have been billed as the most consequential of a lifetime, but this is the most consequential vote of my 75 years on this planet, by far.
I voted for Democracy.

Ok, I'll make this short.
I've never done this before and I'll most likely never do it again, but because of the circumstances, here's an urgent plea to those of my followers and flickr-friends who are living in the United States of America:
** Please go vote. **
The world quite literally can't take another 4 years like this.
Thank you.

Has this sign caused wrecks on Gay Street, north of 17th? I almost crashed when driving by. I immediately dropped by Phil's place and he grabbed his camera and bike when I told him not to drive there. I didn't have my camera so I had to return later. Ah turdo a' turdo I suppose.
I voted a while back after receiving my ballot by mail and then verified my ballot drop box was not a party scam before depositing it there. The day after a holiday, I received an e-mail saying my ballot was received at county HQ. Later, I found another e-mail announcing that my signature was validated and 10-4 Eleanor. I guess Colorado's system could be easier... but how? My drop box is located almost on the way to Phil's and very few blocks from my local Safeway market. Ah, there must be snags everywhere to voting. Well, elsewhere other than Colorado. That is three dropbox ballot returns on my last 3 elections. I didn't see a single covid anywhere on the dropbox left exposed along the city park. Nobody else came by during my brief stop at the box. There are always more drops in our county - way more than one per Texas county. I assume they will build ever more drop boxes in the future.

If you don't vote you don't get to moan about the lack of jobs, the price of things, war, healthcare, the environment, education, laws, basically anything.
It can sometimes feel like voting changes nothing, but it affects everything.
So if you've got the choice today you should go and vote.
There are people in the world who are dying to be as lucky as you.
Remember the first time you voted? The weight of it all, the responsibility you felt, the pride you had?
My son voted for the first time this morning. I was thrilled that he asked if he could go with me to vote, secretly hoping that there would be a longer line so that we could talk about politics some more. I've truly enjoyed listening to his opinions and perspectives throughout this campaign.
Today I am grateful for a son who cares, and who is passionate about his beliefs. If for no other reason, I voted for my childrens' and my granddaughter's future today.
International coverage on the Canada elections is almost absent. It's easy to understand why, we have a minority government led by the conservative party (think of conservatives as, more or less, the equivalent of the Bush republicans) and surveys show the conservative party winning again with almost no doubt, the only question remaining is will it be a minority or majority government. Not too exciting.
Stephen Harper, the leader of the conservatives is said to be worse than Bush, he's got the bad ideas but he's also not as dumb. He's actually a good strategist and plays politics very well. And he's also extremely dangerous! He's against the abortion right, funding culture, he's pro military, pro Alberta tar sands exploitation and most importantly, against environment.
Conservatives voters say that Harper does what he says he'll do and that's right to some extent but what he does is fundamentally bad! How good can that be? He has none of the ideas that will help solve the problems we face in our times. All other parties are acknowledging the climate and energy problems but the conservative party is also the only party of representing the right wing...all other parties dividing the left-wing votes.
If you're Canadian, go visit vote for environment which can help you select the best party to vote for to prevent the conservatives from winning. If we vote intelligently, we could have liberals in power which would be a very good thing. I actually saw the Stéphane Dion interview (leader of the Liberals) at Tout le monde en parle (TV show) tonight and I was very impressed, inspired even! He's an honest and intelligent guy. Too bad he doesn't get the love he deserves. I also love NDP and I hope they'll grow strong enough to be able to get to power someday.
Anyway, vote, get informed and vote! Democracy may give us a bad conservatives government but if we get involved, there's still a chance we can have better. I think people voting conservatives are simply not conscious about really important issues.
The date is October 14th! Canadians, go vote!
