Today's sketching out with Barbara Field's Saturday Painting Group. Dark and cloudy but it was nice to sketch an alley looking like a back street in London. Lunch at Lemón Zëst mediterranean food. Lamb gyro with Stella beer. Desserts is lemon cake from Italy. All in all a very good day.

Kochi lies near the western far end of Kyushu and taking the Bus from the other end in the Weekend I saw many common but touching scenes of people returning home from big cities like Osaka or Tokyo. At each large interchange station, I would often see young people getting off the Bus while the family, old parents were waiting. I could see that silent yet happy emotion of these short reunions in their quiet faces and their fear for the painful separation to come. They never seemed to say much to each other - such beautiful expression of humanity that I could never forget.

Today, Stuart and I took a time trip 56 million years back to La Brea Tar Pits to sketch a saber-tooth tiger. What a great museum! It was a blast to sketch in complete freedom. The visitors were awesome. A little 9 year old girl gave us a lecture on watercolor and materials and an Art Professor from New Mexico university gave me an A+. I passed! We had lunch at Canters where I stuffed myself with liver/pastrami and even tried out a slice of pickled pike.

My first residence in Japan was an apartment called Tsukasa Weekly Mansion in Yokohama. The place was dear to me and whenever I came back to Tokyo, I often tried to come see the old room for old time's sake. This was the view each morning leaving home going to work and while I couldn't exactly explain why it felt so special to me ... it was ... and has always been.

Event with the Urban Sketchers Los Angeles organized by John Pitblado. This is a good location and I had really wanted to come but I dreaded the drive of nearly 2 hours in very bad traffic. So I took 1 Bus, 1 train and a Lyft ride and still made it an hour late to the location. To make the throwdown I painted like mad using only one brush and keeping the water dirty. But in the end I got it done.

The bronze eagle - monument by Antonio Tomasi from Desenzano created in 1971 to remember the Italian Alpini troops of the first world war of Desenzano. It was donated in 1996 to become part of Piazza Garibaldi.

Today I went with Stuart to Exposition Park. Stuart painted Expo Park Rose Garden Waterfountain and I crossed the street to sketch the USC campus. Beautiful clear and sunny weather but a little chily in the shade. Afterwards we had a delicious lunch down the street at "Chichen Itza" in Mercado la Paloma food court. Panuchos (fried taco with shredded turkey), Pollo Asado, Tacos De Pollo Asado! Horchata white sweet drink and Pitahaya Water.

I never saw the sun in Hakodate but that does not mean it wasn't a beautiful place. It sure rained a lot though.
"Oyako" in front of JR Hakodate Station, a monument based on the theme of "interaction" created by industrial designer Shohei Hayashi. The work depicts a parent protecting their child by hiding it under their stomach, and was installed in 2003 as part of the redevelopment of the station square.

After today's sketch-and-lunch, @jessicacrisci.art and I went to the Norton Simon museum and we tried to sketch the lily pond in the back. Half way through, a guard politely told us watercolor is not allowed. So, we switched to whatever we could, from white correction pen to watercolor pencil to finish ... and we did! We were inspired by all the Impressionists' works we'd just seen and we were determined not to leave the sketches undone.

We had originally planned to go sketch the Wrigley's Rose Garden today, but Stuart Perlman wanted to paint some portraits. So I asked Barbara Field for a local coffee shop where there were very little space that people had to sit close together and where people tended to stay for long period of time. Barbara suggested Kaldi in South Pasadena. It was a paradise for guerrilla urban sketching. We sat and cranked out one sketch after another in complete bliss with Xmas music in the background.

200616: I got Winsor & Newton gouache paints from the dear @gila.be and practiced painting water. I mean... I live here at the water and every time I paint something with water I cramp myself... practice is the only thing that helps.
