I’ve been wanting to try out gouache for a while, this is my first experiment with it
thanks to Sue Tilleray for the ref photo.
I've always appreciated the images taken from drones, showing the meandering rivers and streams crossing the land below. Knowing that yours truly is more of a macro photographer, imagine my delight when I saw the same sort of image pop up inside my house. While painting, I was mixing watercolor with gouache in my large enamel tray. Suddenly the colors were moving into each other, replicating the same sort of image taken from a drone. The rest is digital history!

Using watercolors and gouache allows me to visit new and unusual places without packing a suitcase.

The ruins of one of Ottawa-Gatineau's earliest hydro-electrical dams can be seen from a bike path which follows the Ottawa River at the Deschênes Rapids. This dam was built in 1895 and fell in disrepair in the 1940s. The ruins lie in the middle of strong rapids and have been the subject of some controversy recently - the provincial government planned to remove the ruins but local residents petitioned the government to preserve the ruins as an historical site. My sketch was composed from reference photos that I recently took.
Les ruines d'un des premiers barrages hydroélectriques d'Ottawa-Gatineau sont visibles d'une piste cyclable qui longe la rivière des Outaouais aux rapides Deschênes. Ce barrage a été construit en 1895 et est tombé en ruine dans les années 1940. Les ruines se trouvent au milieu de forts rapides et ont fait l'objet d'une controverse récemment - le gouvernement provincial prévoyait d'enlever les ruines, mais les résidents locaux ont demandé au gouvernement de préserver les ruines en tant que site historique. Mon croquis a été composé à partir de photos de référence que j'ai prises récemment.
This is a little experiment that I tried with a limited palette - just blue, black and white. Basically those are the predominant colours that I saw while taking a walk in Lac Leamy Park recently. The intensity of the blues may be a little exaggerated but that's how it felt to me. While the landscape is enchanting, we're approaching that time of year when we feel that there's been just enough of winter - hence the title, Winter Blues.
C'est une petite expérience que j'ai essayée avec une palette limitée - seulement du bleu, du noir et du blanc. Ce sont essentiellement les couleurs prédominantes que j'ai vues récemment lors d'une promenade dans le parc du lac Leamy. L'intensité du bleu est peut-être un peu exagérée mais c'est ce que j'ai ressenti. Alors que le paysage est enchanteur, nous approchons de cette période de l'année où nous sentons qu'il y a eu juste assez d'hiver - d'où le titre, Les blues de l'hiver.
Earlier this month, I took a bike ride along the Ottawa River to the Deschenes Rapids. The river is very turbulent in this location and the views along the bike path are wonderful. I stopped from time to time and took some photo references, one of which inspired me to make this small painting.
Plus tôt ce mois-ci, j'ai fait une balade à vélo le long de la rivière des Outaouais jusqu'aux rapides Deschênes. La rivière est très turbulente à cet endroit et les vues le long de la piste cyclable sont magnifiques. Je m'arrêtais de temps en temps et prenais quelques photos de references dont une m'a inspiré pour réaliser ce petit tableau.
