I was sitting at my desk this afternoon wondering what to take a picture of for my challenge (it's difficult when you work all day and it's dark when you leave in a morning and arrive back home in the evening) and then I noticed today's Google Doodle. It celebrates Nicholas Steno, the Saint who undermined creationism and the father of modern geology. He was one of the first to identify fossils as being from living organisms. And at that point a little lightbulb lit above my head for what to photograph at lunchtime :)

This fossilised tree stump was discovered at Clayton (Bradford) in 1889 in a sandstone quarry and is around 330 million years old. When it was alive Yorkshire was a hot, steamy, tropical swamp near the equator and this tree would have stood at over 40 metres high.

I walk past it often at lunchtime and always try to picture what the world must have looked like back then. It boggles the mind! :)

I wondered what this Google Doodle was celebrating and hovering over the doodle revealed "Happy Birthday Karen". Spooky? Not really. I gave my birthday to Google when I set up my Google+ account and I use Chrome (owned by Google) as my default browser.
