Belemnites (Belemnitida) were squid-like animals belonging to the cephalopod class of the mollusc phylum, and therefore related to the ammonites of old as well as to the modern squids, octopuses and nautiluses.
Now extinct, their fossils are found in rocks of Jurassic and Cretaceous ages, with a few species hanging on into the early part of the Tertiary. The animal’s soft parts very rarely fossilise, leaving us with only the hard parts; the guard and the phragmacone.

Details of his reign are almost exclusively from such panels, which were designed to overwhelm onlookers with evidence of the King's wealth and power. This panel shows King Ashurnasirpal II standing opposite one of his court officials conducting a religious ceremony. The carving is one of many that were excavated by the archaeologist Austen Henry Layard at Nimrud in the 1840s.

The was the result of heating agarose in a 500ml Pyrex bottle where the bottle cap was accidently screwed down tight and therefore the pressure couldn't be released. The bottle exploded with sufficient energy to cause the damage shown. The user had a badly bruised chest where the door hit him.
