In Icelandic, “Gullfoss” translates to The Golden Waterfall, and it’s easy to see why the natural spectacle has earned this name. By many people’s estimation, this is the most famous waterfall in all of Iceland. Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle trail, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. A trip through the Golden Circle will usually include Geysir Geothermal Area and Þingvellir National Park. The park might be more familiar to you as North of Westeros from "Game of Thrones".

While you can get fairly up close and personal with Gullfoss, be sure to stay behind the fence. On a clear day, you can enjoy the spray from the waterfall on your face. But if you’re too daring and get too close to the edge, just remember that the waterfall features a 105-foot drop.106 571

Gullfoss ("Golden Falls") is a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. The wide Hvítá river flows southward, and about a kilometre above the falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 metres or 36 feet, and 21 metres or 69 feet) into a crevice 32 metres (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 metres (66 ft) wide and 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river.

De gouden kleur in de stenen komt nog uit de tijd van de oude goudmijnen in die regio. Het zijn oxiderende metalen die in de vroegere jaren zich hebben afgezet op de rotsen.

The gold color is a left over from the old gold mines in that region. The metals are oxidized, and give this specic color.

When visiting Taiwan last year, on of the most beautiful places I've been to was the golden waterfalls, just outside Jiufen. The waterfalls are surrounded by beautiful mountains, and flow over golden rocks. A really wonderful place for landscape enthousiasts.

Have a nice day everyone!

Part of the Golden Circle drive. Also known as Golden Falls.

I went on a photography tour in southern Iceland in October but before the tour started, my friends and I drove around the Golden Circle for a day. It was very busy as you can see with the stream of people but the autumn colours were stunning.

I walked down above the gorge below Gullfoss, away from the crowds, and the autumn colours were stunning.

Thanks for your faves and comments!

***World's Top 10*** Easily Iceland's most famous waterfall, this 32m waterfall plunges in two stages at an angle to each other providing that memorable shape and giving the appearance that the Hvitá River plunges into an abyss. On sunny afternoons, arcing rainbows form in the wafting mist. Due to its popularity, expect to share this waterfall with hordes of tourists as well as persistent midges.

“LIGHT UP 13 LAYER REMAINS“ Lighting Ceremony

Located in Ruifang District of New Taipei City, “the historic remains of ShueiNanDong Smelter” was the facility for copper mining during the Japanese colonial period. Designed by the then director - Mike Kikujirou, the structure was built into the hillside with 13 stories, so has been dubbed as “13 layer” by old miners and local people. Having stood on the hillside over the decades, the infrastructure has become a precious heritage. As the neighborhood also kept the memory of mining industry, the whole region forms an organic “Mining Industry Museum” with its own unique landscape. According to〈Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage〉, the Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture has listed “the historic remains of ShueiNanDong Smelter” as a Potential World Heritage Site in Taiwan.

In order to reproduce the historical scene of the “golden town, ” and to remind people of its beauty and history context, Taiwan Power Company cooperates with world-class lighting artist- Lien Chou and cutting-edge artist- Joyce Ho, and curates “Light up 13 Layer Remains.”The exhibition of amber lights in different luminance echoing the historic remains’ feature will be lit from 6 PM to 9PM every night thereafter. On the Mid-Autumn Festival, the light ceremony will be held by Taiwan Power Company and The General Association of Chinese Culture, and turns these lights into a nostalgia connection between the remains and people.

South Iceland

Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is an iconic waterfall of Iceland offering a spectacular view of the forces and beauty of untouched nature. Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle tour, located in South Iceland on the Hvítá (White) river which is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, the Langjökull. The water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon which walls reach up to 70 meters in height. This photo is taken from the east bank, a view not so many enjoy since it is a more remote route to take to get there.

...or more like Orangy Falls

The Gold Waterfall is located near Zihciang Bridge and Changren Mining Area. The golden color is formed due to heavy rainfall in the Jingua Stone area flowing into the copper and iron ore, and out.

This would be my first time photographing waterfalls. Clearly the lighting conditions were not good. That was also partly my fault by arriving there at noon, when the sun was brightest and highest. I took a couple of shots and had to move on cuz i had to get home early. I used my filters, stopped down to f22 in order to hold the shutter longer to get the smooth water. But still, it was too bright.

South Iceland

I have been very lazy lately to process any photos so I dug into my archives over the weekend and here came the post for today :) You might be wondering why this is called the golden waterfall. The reason is cos this waterfall appears a golden-yellow in colour due to the large quantities of iron in the stream water. The iron minerals have been oxidized to a golden-yellow sand, which accumulates in the stream bed and sparkles like gold in the sunlight. Geesh.. the description sounds good isn't it :D but what makes it even better was when I heard someone saying that the water at the base of this fall looks just like a pool of urine lol!
