In Europe's medieval philosophy and theology (note that they were not separated - just like the big cathedrals were not just places of worship but also the location of vast libraries) it was a common thought that two books were written "by the finger of God"; the Bible and Nature. My point here is not to return to a pre-modern world view, but to highlight that here we have a sophisticated understanding that studying and "reading" nature are an alternative way of getting closer to God [or, to use a more scholarly language, a way to educate our ignorance]. The "Monolito Fraile", also known as "Estela Fraile" or "God of Water", is is located inside the enclosure of the temple of Kalasasaya and was built by members of the Tiahuanaco culture, pre-Columbian civilization that during its period of greatest expansion comprised almost the entire high plateau known as the Collao Plateau up to the coast of the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Chapare in the east. Its capital and main religious center was the city of Tiwanaku, located on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

One of the most spectacular sunsets I've yet witnessed, taken in March 2018 at Bluff Cove off the Palos Verdes Peninsula near my home in Southern California.
Ganesha or Ganesh, also known as Ganapati and Vinayaka, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali (Indonesia) and Bangladesh and in countries with large ethnic Indian populations including Fiji, Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago. Hindu denominations worship him regardless of affiliations.Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists.
Although he is known by many attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify.Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganesha is also invoked as patron of letters and learning during writing sessions. Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits.
Ganesha likely emerged as a deity as early as the 1st century CE,but most certainly by the 4th and 5th centuries CE, during the Gupta period, although he inherited traits from Vedic and pre-Vedic precursors. Hindu mythology identifies him as the restored son of Parvati and Shiva of the Shaivism tradition, but he is a pan-Hindu god found in its various traditions. In the Ganapatya tradition of Hinduism, Ganesha is the supreme deity. The principal texts on Ganesha include the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana, and the Ganapati Atharvashirsa. I was strolling with friends in light fog at Mackinaw City, Michigan, when I noticed these streaks of light being produced by shadows and light. Had no camera with me so I used my telephone for the shot. The rays seemed to be coming from or going onto the house.
"Tip of the Mitt", the name above the door, refers to its location. In the USA, the State of Michigan is shaped like a mitten. This house, when you hold your right hand up with the palm facing you, sits at the tip of your middle finger on Lake Huron (one of the five Great Lakes in the USA) . . . the tip of the mitt.
Whenever I am afield or outdoors, there steals over me the acute consciousness that I am confronted on every hand by the superb workmanship of my Father. It is as if every tree, rock, river, flower, mountain, bird, or blade of grass had stamped upon it the indelible label, "Made by God." Mostly non-theistic Friends
The actual meeting house is adjacent to the school, which is pictured above.
# I attended here many Sunday mornings when I lived in Chester County. I went there primarily to meditate, as most of the time there was quiet. There were no priests and near the beginning of the hour someone would very briefly read from a verse from the Bible, but other than that there was no mention of God or Christ, hence the term “non-theistic”. On occasion someone in attendance might stand to say whatever was on their mind, but it was brief and their was no further discussion of the subject.
Meditation was very important to me, as I worked many hours in the week and had thee children who required my attention as well as my house that required constant upkeep.
So, these “meetings” was my time to calm myself and gain a bit of peace. I always came away refreshed. And I still practice meditation at home.
