So many wild turkeys this past year where I walk but when you approach they almost always immediately walk the other direction. I only had my iphone but I sat nearby a group of them who actually kept walking over toward me and the sun was revealing their colored splendor. Background filter with Topaz.
Wild Turkey enjoying their Canada Thanksgiving Day weekend.
Thank you for viewing and have a wonderful day.

This guy was traveling with a group of hens and they had ALL of his attention allowing me to get close enough for this photo. The price for me was crawling in a bit of mud. Sign me up.

Second in my series of ground nesting birds.
About 30 minutes after I photographed the Sharp-tailed Grouse, we encountered a flock of wild turkeys. Though it was later than the grouse shot, the sun hadn't reached the valley floor where we found them so this has cool light compared to the warm glow on the grouse.
From the Cornell Lab:
"Wild Turkeys nest on the ground in dead leaves at the bases of trees, under brush piles or thick shrubbery, or occasionally in open hayfields.
The female scratches a shallow depression in the soil, about 1 inch deep, 8–11 inches wide, and 9–13 inches long. Wild Turkeys use only the dead leaves or other plant materials already present at the nest site.
Photographed in Custer State Park, South Dakota.
After an early morning photo session with a bull elk and his harem, we headed to an area of Rocky Mountain National Park where moose sighting had been reported. No moose that morning but this wild turkey and five of its friends made an appearance. Those of you who know me well, know that I enjoy any wildlife photo op.
The eastern turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) is a large upland ground bird native to North America. It inhabits hardwood forests with scattered clearings where it spends time foraging low to the ground or roosting in flocks in tall trees. These wild birds are loud and vocal, expressing themselves with various noises.
-- Five Eastern Turkey Facts --
‧ You can hear their gobbles up to a mile away!
‧ Unlike the domestic variety, wild turkeys are solid and agile fliers.
‧ Males don’t assist in caring for their young. Poults follow after their mother and learn how to fend for themselves right after hatching.
‧ The eastern turkey is the most hunted subspecies of wild turkey.
‧ They forage with other animals like deer and squirrels, helping them stay more alert to predators as they feed.

We usually see wild turkeys in Custer State Park and our most recent visit was no exception.
I was able to get photos of eight mammal and bird species during our five days in Badlands and Custer. This is number six in my series of those shots.
Christmas and Thanksgiving seen here, part of the notorious Dinner Gang were just down in our yard by the bird feeder and then headed up the hill to the main road before deciding which way they wanted to travel next.

The angle of the cool morning light brought out the blue iridescence in this tom turkey's plumage. The blue face however, is a sign of excitement occurring during mating season. The face and wattles of a tom can change from red to blue in a matter of seconds as it displays for a female's attention.
They spook easily. The least little movement or noise they are on the run. They ran from down in our yard up the hill and down Road 506 towards the neighbour's house.
I may not always have time to thank you all for your visits and comments but rest assured, that I do read them and am very appreciative that you took the time to pop by and see what I see here "North of 7" in Rural Eastern Ontario (North Frontenac Township) or, where ever else I might be with my camera now that I am retired and loving it.

Birders – avert your eyes!
I know I really shouldn’t be posting this as its soft, a bit blurry and will cause all proper bird photographers to bury their heads in their hands. But I can’t resist :)
There I was at the crack of dawn to shoot sunrise at Petersfield Lake, my first shoot there for months. Naturally all I could see was grey gloom and the zillion or so waterfowl birds doing their usual best to disturb the water surface. Didn’t really matter today as I was leaning on the tripod dozing in the vain hope that some light would break through.
When in my dopey state I noticed this Cormorant fishing 20 or so yards away and on its 3rd dive it caught a small fish. Cool. Like watching David Attenborough without the TV. Its next dive it caught another and again on the next. Suddenly I remembered I am supposed to be a photographer and not just a tripod leaner and felt I should make an attempt to capture this. The problem is I have about the worse camera for wildlife, as I have found in my previous attempts at birding, it was also before sunrise and quite dark! So I stuck the thing on auto and attempted to focus, which of course the camera didn’t. I quickly learnt three things about Cormorants, they stay under the water for what seemed like an age, they come back up miles away from where they started, and they gobble down their catch quicker than my camera will focus.
Finally I managed to predict where it would surface and it popped up with this large fish (a young Carp?) and I went into full panic mode of pressing buttons and getting flustered. Well, I got the shot, trouble is 1/200th second and ISO 3200 on a mirrorless camera is just asking for trouble with noise and blur.
It caught several more small fish, but this whopper must have been catch of the day. Thanks Mr Cormorant for turning a dud shoot into a fun time.

Two years ago, this hat fit my son's head and was pretty doggone cute. It was a turkey and the button was one of the eyes.

Boulder, Colorado. These three turkeys were crossing the road on my way to work. It's hard to say whether they are ugly or beautiful.
Are they wild?
I was tagged to do the 5th picture from the 5th folder in my computer. (Thanks alot Elisa! Funny how your picture disappeared! =) ) I had to do alot to it to get it to be halfway decent. A very unfocused shot with the point and shoot. Turkeys passing by in the back field on Thanksgiving Day.
It's not often that one can get close enough to these beautiful birds for satisfactory images. My husband and I were just that lucky last year in the fall of 2013.

hi, my name is piglet and i've met you all many time before (:
teehee so i'm sure you're all familiar with my buddy piglet here! :D Eric was totally right in guessing that piglet was next! haha! If i didn't tell you guys or forgot that i did, piglet is one of my birthday presents from a good friend in grade 9. I'm not too close to him anymore, but i still am thankful for meeting him.
Today is GOBBLEGOBBLE day :D no schoool ! yay! i'm actually really happy about that haha :D except i'm stuck doing english all day ): remember how i had to read frankenstein for my eng class? it's actually a fantastic book! i totally love it! what i hate is that after every single chapter i have to write down notes and quotes from what i just read, it really gets quite annoying sometimes. but oh well, that's english class ;P
i feel like i haven't been updating you guys on anything lately, then again i'm not sure who actually reads what i type here haha! it's soooo long x) (that's what she said....) if you actually read this, i thank you (:
so lately i've been pretty busy with school, piano and swimming. i'll start with school. I love my classes and i like the people in them. But there are some times where i just feel out of place. It's usually when i'm really tired and i just don't wanna be around people so i just sulk around like a zombie all day haha. That's really unlike me, cause i'm usually the loud and VERY loud person in the school :D. As for swimming, i'm supposed to be "retired-ish" from it, but my coach just won't let me skip any practices haha!! so now i'm making a lot more practices than i'm supposed to be going to. It's kinda overwhelming at some times, but overall i know that it's gonna benefit me in the end. I've been getting a ride from a friend for wed AM practice too so i don't have to worry about being late for school. Lastly, piano. Practical wise, i am in grade 10 now. But technically, i still am grade 9 because i haven't done my harmony and history exam yet ): it's gonna be in december and i'm freaking out! i took the classes back in the summer, but i missed the registration date for the exam so i had to wait until december to do it ): i betcha i'm gonna fail it D: grrrr
so that's my life right now ^ wow, i typed A LOT. i'm sorry haha!
hope everyone has a terrific tuesday tmr! wish you all the best! happy gobble gobble day!!! :D
Turkey .... Meleagris gallopavo
This lovely red headed turkey cock was trying to impress the hens while I was photographing him.
A turkey's throat and head can change colour according to its levels of stress or excitement.
Turkeys make a gobble, gobble sound to try and attract hen's.
Photographed recently at Avon Valley Nature Reserve, Saltford near Bristol.
