Goat's Beard (aka Yellow Salsify) is a perennial, non-native wildflower found in Colorado (and in Michigan). Supposedly, it's taproot can be ground up as a coffee substitute. I think I'd have to wait 'til coffee was available again : )
It's large yellow flower opens in the morning, turns to face the sun, and closes by midday.
A Goatsbeard seed head I spotted along a country walking trail, best viewed large. Happy Texture Tuesday!

Tragopogon dubious: From flowers to large seedhead.
Tragopogon dubius (yellow salsify,[1] western salsify, western goat's-beard, wild oysterplant, yellow goat's beard, goat's beard, goatsbeard, common salsify, salsify) [...] has been introduced into North America where it has become widespread [...].
Like most salsifies, the western salsify grows as an annual or occasionally biennial forb, reaching a height of typically 20–60 cm but sometimes almost a metre. It grows typically in warm, sheltered spots with moist soil. Its yellow flower is 4–6 cm in diameter and is likely to be seen in late spring or early summer. Buds are blue-green, tall, and tapered. The flowers open early in the morning and often close up by late afternoon. Later the plant forms a seed head that resembles that of the dandelions but is distinctly larger. Wikipedia

Great to find this shimmering goatsbeard seed head on our acreage. It's a weed but I love its potential as a photographic theme.

of the wild Salsify, or Goats Beard seed head. Found in many wild places now, this one in a wild flower meadow while wandering with one of my very best friends this week for a couple of hours.
I tried so many different ways of showing this off to its best - so I hope you like it, it took me ages !! Oh, by the way, this can also be grown in the garden in its cultivated form - the roots apparently taste like oysters. I have never tried it so don't take my word for it !
Thank you so very much for looking - each view is so appreciated. Please have a very happy, healthy and safe weekend.
'sunset with seeds' On Black -- or --Larger
This is the remnant of www.flickr.com/photos/algo/238463140/in/photostream/ which has been in my car windscreen for a month, slowly shedding.
It's the middle of the summer and we're finally seeing quite a lot of Monarch butterflies floating through the air and gracing our gardens.
I found this beauty at the lakeshore, resting on a dried Purple Goat's Beard blossom that has already seeded out.
Once again, a 'macro' captured with my telephoto lens.
Enlarge for a more immersive view.
Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Taking a Flickr break. Back at the end of August. Will miss you all!
Thanks for visiting and have a great summer!
- the picture in the comments below - I had such a struggle photographing it last year - as soon as I sprayed it with water, all the seed heads closed up! So I took great pleasure in burying them in a pot...well they grew, and look what I found in the garden today! :-)
Photographed the Goatsbeard in one of the Flower Gardens located in the Gillies Lake Conservation Area in Timmins in the Township of Tisdale in the City of Timmins in Northeastern Ontario Canada.

Found along the side of the road in Grass Valley, California. Love the possibilities for photographic creativity that it offers.

Have a pleasant evening and thanks for dropping by.
Salsify is a very interesting flower. The roots are edible and they close their blooms around noon. These wild flowers were growing in my grandparent's front garden (yard).
(My grandparents passed away in 1999 - still have their home until it gets sold this year.)
what shall we do with the summer clock?
A large fluffy seedhead of the Goat’s Beard (Tragopogon pratensis), often called ‘clock’ like many dandelion seedheads. It doesn’t tick or tock. Bath Skyline walk, Claverton, BANES, England, UK.
Thank you for your visit, favours and comments, much appreciated.
Always fun to shoot these. I kind of remember Euell Gibbons said the roots taste like oysters. I haven't tried that.
