As a cyclist who wasn't particularly good at climbing hills, Oak Flat was a nice option for me with more steady grades than full-blown mountain climbs. It wasn't my first choice--the valleys were!

It wasn't my first choice for Milky Way season, but it was easy to get to in the pandemic and with my work schedule. Turns out it is a pretty good location anyway. I shot the sky tracked with an f2.8 14mm Rokinon lens, 2 minutes at ISO 800. The landscape is lit by a combination of my GoalZero lantern and the light dome over nearby Albuquerque.

As I was working on this image, the following words of Barbara Holmes grabbed my soul: "Up above our heads, there are worlds unknown and a canopy of grace, light, air, and water that supports our survival. Without realizing it, we expend massive amounts of energy to block out the vastness of our universe. This is to be expected, for, in its totality, this information can be more than human systems can take. However, by riveting our attention on the mundane, we filter out the wonder that is available with each breath."

I invite you to breath in the vastness of this creation and your sacred connection to it.

Peace...and cheers!

There are times when the landscape and the equipment don't quite let you arrange the scene the way you pictured in you mind.

Go with it anyway.

Find another option.

And see what results.

It may require a crop. A rotation. Or not.

In this case, I knew that I wanted the rock formation to fill the frame or at least nearly so. And I wanted to make sure I had a good view of sky through the window in the rock. I wasn't quite able to level the camera with those two constraints. The result? A formation that appears to be pointing slightly skyward. It obscures many of the markers in the sky that would tip educated viewers off to the rotation in the frame. Sure, the horizon is at an angle, but that could be the edge of a hill.

It looks meant to be.

Jupiter and Antares are hidden behind the formation. The landscape is lit with a GoalZero miniature lantern. The landscape and sky are processed separately. Made from 10 light frames by Starry Landscape Stacker 1.8.0. Algorithm: Mean Min Hor Noise.

Cheers!

I've shot at Abiquiu, New Mexico a number of times, and the clouds always seem to frustrate me at night. A little patience this night paid off.

While thunderstorms raged near Los Alamos, the clouds started to clear out and make for som night night sky moments like this one. The lighting on the cloud in the middle of this image is reminiscent of Close Encounters with the lights burning through a red cloud. I don't think I was abducted, but it could have happened.

Jupiter is blaring away in the Milky Way with Scorpius prominent in this image. The image was taken from my campsite, with the trees and fence lit by two small GoalZero lanterns adjusted for minimal illumination. The landscape and sky are processed separately and combined in Photoshop. Made from 8 light frames by Starry Landscape Stacker 1.8.0. Algorithm: Mean Min Hor Noise

Fireflies were photographed above a thick patch of ferns in Lancaster, PA. The ferns were located in a forest above a stream that was absolutely loaded with fireflies. Higher on the hillside, there were fewer fireflies; however, I like the way it turned out! The image was taken with a Canon 80D and a Rokinon 12 mm f/2.8 lens. A stack of 101 exposures, taken at ISO 6400 were used to make this image. A goal zero mini lantern was used to illuminate the foreground in a couple of the stacked exposures.

Aside from some familiar features in the sky, where would you imagine yourself to be if you were immersed within this scene?

You'd probably be relieved to be breathing air! And wondering if you'll make it home.

Oddly enough, you're only about an hour's walk to a highway that will take you to Farmington, New Mexico. So many of the formations at Bisti seem to thumb their nose at gravity, at least for some period of time.

This scene is lit by my GoalZero adjustable lanterns. The sky features Jupiter, Antares, and the Scorpius region of the Milky Way. Made from 9 light frames by Starry Landscape Stacker 1.8.0. Algorithm: Mean Min Hor Noise.

Cheers!

Decided to touch up one of my favorite shots before I submitted it to this years Plus One Collection!

It sure is nice to be reconnected with my photos. I have a server but the internet back in CO just didn't make it worth it. So now I have tons and tons of photos from June/July that I never even touched :) Here is one from July 11 when Casey McCallister and I went down towards Palo Alto to shoot the Milky Way above the fog. Another one for my Painting The Sky series with my Goal Zero Bolt Flashlight.

After visiting the Castles during the day on Ohio Pass, we decided to head there at night because the position of the Milky Way. The clouds were kind of in the way for what we were trying to do, as we needed to shoot with a telephoto. So I decided it would be a nice place to take a self portrait and add to my light series. This is a multiple shot pano to get more of the Milky Way. +Natalia Stone and I then camped down the road a bit and got up for sunrise here as well.

How could I spent a better night lost in the middle of the Peruvian Andes surrounded by amazing peaks, billions stars & the milky way just above myself... 1 st night base camp in the magic of the Cordillera Huayhuash. Ancash. Huanuco. Lima. Andes. Peru.

Tonight Cole and i headed to China Walls for sunset. The light hasn't been great but still pretty nice clouds. We decided to hang around a bit after and get some star shots before we ate. While hanging out, waiting for it to get a bit darker we talked with this cool group of fisherman, I finally decided to ask them to stand still for 20 seconds to see what I could get! My hand moved more then I wanted but I have a better one from last night that I'll share someday! I have been loving the Goal Zero flashlight that I got, its pretty powerfull and changers with usb or solar and of course makes for a great prop!

When Cole and I camped at Ka'ena Point in Hawaii early June we found this cool lookout tower. Unfortunately the clouds decided to ruin our hopes for stars. Thanks Cole for clicking the trigger while I climbed up the tower. Flashlight is the Bolt from Goal Zero.

Last night I met up with +Dallas Nagata White and +Tom Anderson in Hanauma Bay to shoot the stars and Milky Way. There were so many awesome things to shoot up in that area, it will definitely take me a while to digest all the shots I got. Here is one from the walk up, I guess I have decided to do a little #selfportrait series with my +Goal Zero Flashlight. I can't get over the beam on this thing. +Cole Yamane and I decided to stay out after Dallas and Tom went home. We even were up for sunrise, and then we crashed at 9am when we got home.
