A goal, or rather a target photo I had during my visit to Burgenland. Apart from the bee-eaters, I wanted to see the rare gopher and if possible take a nice photo of the funny meerkats.

This tortoise is a species of the Gopherus genus native to the southeastern United States of America. The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for 360 other animal species. They are threatened by predation and habitat destruction.

The characteristic "making a man" helps the gopher to recognize dangers in good time. In an emergency, they warn with shrill whistles, similar to marmots.
Nothing to get excited about. It's just a harmless gopher snake that crossed my path when I was walking my dog in the Corte Madera, CA Marsh.
This young tortoise was trying to cross the Legacy (Bicycle) Trail, in the general vicinity of Oscar Scherer State Park, amidst very heavy two-wheeled traffic. Adult tortoises and their burrows are easy to spot along this public railbed/bike path. The species (Gopherus polyphemus) is state-listed as "Threatened" in Florida and deserves listing by the US Fish & Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act, but has not been thus designated due to agency resource limitations (and resistance from developers?). It occupies the type of dry, well drained soils beloved by real estate developers, and if any phrase best summarizes life in Florida today, it is rampant, relentless, rapacious development and massive destruction of wildlife habitat.
An adult tortoise can reach nearly a foot in length and will spend most of its time in burrows it has excavated (length of the burrows can reach 15 or more). It's generally a good idea to avoid touching these animals, but this little one was in grave danger of being crushed by racing cyclists and thick-wheeled, rapidly moving e-bikes, so we moved it off the pavement into the adjacent grass and shrub-land. Gopher tortoises are characterized as a keystone species, as they modify the environment in ways that benefit many other species: over 300 species of animals have been found living their burrows. They are relatively accustomed to human activity, and I've found in some parks they actually walked directly toward me if I stop to photograph them. The fourth photo shows that adult approaching me.

Who will get the thrill that'll gitcha when you get your picture

My dog Moe fixated on a gopher hole in our local park. I'm always amazed how he's hardwired to find and hunt critters.
I finally saw an Ardea species stab the ground and come up with a small mammal. Not the usual Ardea though, alba (Great Egret) not Herodias (Great Blue Heron). The type of fuzzball is a mystery. Suggestions have been pocket gopher (small/young), vole (large) and mole. This photo was taken in the "golden hour" and so the golden color of its fur is not necessarily distinctive. Moreover the egret on the stab came up with some branches etc. in the beak as well as the squirming little fuzzball. Along the way the fuzzball stopped squirming, the branches were dropped and the fuzzball was successfully swallowed.

From my archives, a gopher snake (I think) - harmless and quite beneficial. In the original, it was hard to see in the grass, so I played with it - the image, not the snake - in Topaz Studio to come up with this artsified version.

Spotted this tortoise when I drove by the park on my way home last March. It was busy feeding on the grass so I pulled over and very slow and carefully took one step closer each time I got a chance when it's head was down on the grass. Surprised I could get that close without being spotted. I even got a short video. They're such nice creatures. They look so harmless .. never bothered anyone it seems.
