7/52 - Low Light - 52 Weeks: The 2025 Edition

74/125 - Play of Light - 125 Pictures in 2025

Too much light in this image to see the glow worms on the ceiling of the cave, but the glow worms use these mucus-covered threads to capture their prey.

Taken just inside the entrance to the main cave. A 4 image HDR merge.

"Formed by nature and one of Manawatū’s best hidden gems, these stunning caves are host to glow worms which can be seen during the day, but are best seen at night or on dusk. The full 600m adventure will take you through caves, spectacular gorges and across a running stream. When entering the track, turn right at the bottom of the stairs which takes you upstream and down into the gully, where you’ll be met by towering walls covered in lush moss, wild ferns and orchids. You'll cross streams along the way, take care not to slip. The main cave is located about 80m from the bottom of the hill." More info at: manawatunz.co.nz/listing/limestone-creek-reserve-glow-wor...

Another take from just inside the entrance to the main cave - a slightly different composition. A 3 image HDR merge.

Glowworms (blue dots) and a limestone cave wall in Footwhistle Cave in Waitomo Caves, New Zealand. This photo was actually an accident - I was initially just taking a long-exposure cell phone photo of the blue dots in blackness, when the guide unexpectedly turned on the path lighting, revealing the cave wall in my photo. At Spellbound Glowworm Caves near Waitomo, NZ

The impressive visitors' centre at the Waitomo Caves. The Glow Worm Caves are definitely worth checking out (no photography allowed, of course) but the 45 minute tour is a joke and consists of at least 15-20 minutes of padding by the tour guides to justify the NZ$49 entrance fee.

Boat exit from Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand, (2/2017)

From my recent holiday in New Zealand.

Today, it's "cave day" and pictures from Ruakuri caves :)

Unfortunatley they don't let you take photographs in the glowworm caves at Waitomo, but once your'e off the boat it's a free-for-all to get at least some memory taken onto your camera of what was a fantastic journey underground.

If you ever visit New Zealand this place should be top of your list. Slowly gliding accross the subterranean river in the boat, looking up at what seems to be thousands upon thousands of glow-worms is like looking out into the vastness of the universe, truly humbling.

These stick figures are warning of the various dangers in the Glowworm Caves at Te Anau. The roof might fall on your head; you might find yourself glued to a handrail; and the seats in the boat might catch you a nasty thwack behind the knees.

No pics from in the glowworm cave, obviously, but we were there and thorougly enjoyed being in a tour group of 4

A very nice cave with thousands of glowworms, look like blue stars. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures inside the cave.

We were not allowed to photograph inside, but believe me, it was incredibly beautiful! Read my journal entry here: wp.me/s26TNj-hobbiton
