A visit to the historic docks in Gloucester on a warm Spring day!!

Old Father Time Clock, Southgate Street, Gloucester

The building is notable for its clock made by Niehus Brothers of Bristol, with five life-size automata figures striking bells on the hours and quarters; the figures standing within the arched recess on the first floor: in the centre Father Time with an hour glass, to right John Bull and a Welshwoman, to the left a Scotsman and an Irishwoman; above the crown of the arch a decorative, cast-iron, cantilever bracket supporting a clock crowned by a brass finial, and hanging from the bracket a larger bell.

Gloucester Docks is an historic area of the city of Gloucester. The docks are located at the northern junction of the River Severn with the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. They are Britain's most inland port. The docks include fifteen Victorian warehouses that are now listed buildings, It also contains the Gloucester Waterways Museum and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum.

A perfect morning for a walk along the towpath… A relatively new development of apartments overlooking a busy basin on the 16-mile long Gloucester to Sharpness Canal near Gloucester's historic docks. For much of its length the canal runs close to the tidal River Severn, but cuts off a significant loop in the river, at a once-dangerous bend near Arlingham. It was once the broadest and deepest canal in the world.

I think I must go again very soon, with my camera and a couple of spare batteries!!! The phone is very good, but a lot of the details are lost! Those organ pipes are very beautiful!!!

For Sliders Sunday

The Folk of Gloucester is a museum which is housed in two of the oldest buildings in the City of Gloucester, a Tudor merchant's house and a 17th-century town house. The timber framed museum in Westgate Street is devoted to the social history of Gloucestershire.

Bishop John Hooper is said to have lodged in the building the night before he was executed in St. Mary's square, near the cathedral in 1555.

This morning - my birthday.

Copper's Hill near Gloucester. Famous for the cheese rolling event. This view from the top does not do the sheer steepness justice.

HBM!

I paid my £3 for a photo permit - I wonder if everyone else did?

While exploring the New England coastline I spotted this location close to Gloucester, approximately 40 miles north of Boston. Timing was not ideal, as I came by in the middle of the day, but luckily the clouds helped to soften the light and “add some mood”.

Here you'll find a colored version of the photo.
