This is an image that I've had in mind since I started this landscape photography lark, around 4 years ago. It's probably the first sight newcomers to the Lake District get, hinting at what's to come. This particular morning, conditions were just about perfect for the image in my mind's eye, misty pre-sunrise, subtle blue tones and slightly imperfect reflections. Making the image meant just dumping my car in front of the Low Wood Bay hotel, grabbing my camera, dashing across the road and firing off the 6 images required handheld, not really knowing if it was sharp orif the images would stitch together in post. All things considered, I'm very happy with the result!

This was a gathering of clouds on the northern shore of Ullswater on an autumn day in the Lake District. I took advantage of the mirror effect that was being caused by a colder part of the water on the side of the boat. I decided this landscape was dramatic enough for a black and white image.

There are times when you see a scene and think "yep, grumpy mono" then set up and think "yeah, the water is fairly flat but a long exposure is the way to go" and 4 minutes later we have this, a rather standard rock in the foreground lake shot. But that mood, that light on the fells, the kind of landscape image that really tickles my pickle.

Black and white images, for me, are something I see immediately, the decision to go down that route is made before my camera is out of my bag, it's rarely, if ever, a last resort to "save" a photograph, the editing process is made, in my mind's eye, before the shutter release is pressed.

I wanted to capture the reflection of Whitby Abbey in the due pond on a sunny autumn day. I was happy that the pond was quite shielded from the wind on the hill, so it gave a great mirror surface.

This house is located near the Lea Navigation and was probably built for canal workers. I think in a past life it has been a shop but in the even light of today it just looked beautiful.

These 3 chaps are well known trees up on Holme Fell but I'm fairly sure that this is my first image of them. Taken shortly before sunrise on what was to become quite a difficult photography session, it probably wouldn't have bee quite so tough if I had been there a couple of weeks earlier, when the heather was in full bloom, as the light came up, it became clear that it had gone over its best. Ah well, there's always next year!

St Albans is the only major church in England with an 11th century great crossing tower still standing. It is also the only cathedral tower

in England to be built using Roman bricks.

In some places, the walls of the tower are seven feet thick and the whole structure weighs 5000 tonnes.

The dam wall on one of the abandoned reservoirs which used to feed Hodge Close Quarry. I love the play between the crumbling man-made and the returning nature in this scene, as well as the delicious soft light filtering through. Yeah, I'm really rather happy with this.

This is the first image that I made in the Lake District after the lifting of covid lockdown restrictions, a wet and wild day in the lakes, which had us changing our location several times before settling on Great Mell Fell. I think the usual thing is to photograph the trees higher up the fell but for me, the oak woodland at the bottom half of the fell is where it's at and is definitely a place that I'll be exploring further in the autumn and winter.
