NASA’s OPTIMUS PRIME Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge (OPSPARC) winners from elementary, middle school, high school, and InWorld were invited to Goddard to spend 2 days touring our labs and facilities with exclusive, behind the scenes opportunities.

The high school winners: Jimin Lee, Daniel Kyong, and Thomas Kyong are pictured here presenting their GLOG interactive virtual poster, and explaining their innovative process they used to come up with a technology spinoff using Goddard technology that makes the world a better place. One evening while in Ashland, Executive Chef Mark Carter or the Peerless Hotel, Restaurant & Wine Bar prepared a small plate of Pan Roasted Sturgeon with Lobster Risotto and Saffron-Orange Butter for us.

When Chef Mark was at work in the kitchen, his passion for cooking shined and the sturgeon was some of the best we've tasted and we could have consumed a lot of his delicious risotto.

Mark never planned to be a chef, but most of his life revolved around the outdoors, horses, and studying classical guitar. But, Mark paid his dues and went through the ranks. He arrived at the Peerless as a sous chef in January 07 and later that summer became Executive Chef.

Mark is now married and he and his wife, Mithra, now have a son, Fisher.

Anna's Glog: Glogster EDU is a wonderful Web 2.0 tool that allows users to create electronic posters. Text, video, audio and animation can be added to the Glog to create an electronic, interactive poster. I love that Anna shows ownership in her Music Glog, especially by embedding samples of her own music (the play buttons in the flowers). NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, announced the winners of the 2017 OPTIMUS PRIME Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge (OPSPARC) on May 5, 2017. With over 800 entries from across the nation between grades 3 and 12, NASA and the public selected winners for three age groups: elementary, middle and high school.

The winners of the 2017 OPSPARC contest met the call to “Be the Spark” behind innovative concepts for new uses of NASA technologies, sharing their spinoff ideas in digital poster boards, called glogs, within a cloud-based, interactive learning and multimedia platform made by Glogster.

Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Crataegus monogyna): Genus Crataegus is taxonomically a difficult one. Plants are extremely variable in all their morphological traits. For example, even the habit of the species Crataegus monogyne, can vary from very low bush (see Fig. 20 – 24 taken on island Krk) to few meters high bush or even small tree (other Figs. taken on island Olib). In his time Carl von Linné recognized nine species in this genus. Three of them were later assigned to different genera. But around the beginning of 20th century the number of described species exploded. In America more than 1.000 and in Europe about 500 different taxa were published (Ref. 3). In his revision of genus Crataegus Christensen (1992) described about 60 taxa in the Old World. For a purpose of a better overview, all these taxa are organized in several sections and subsections, but different authors did this on different ways according to their understanding of the terms species, subspecies, variety and form. So, the situation is completely 'unmanageable' for an amateur botanist.

Nevertheless, all plants shown here have flowers with a single stigma, so they must be somewhere close to Crataegus monogyna. Also both references Nikolić (2004) and Milović (2016) state presence of this species and no others for islands Olib and Krk. This make me pretty sure the determination is correct.

This house is next to the cottage I called home during my stay. Right next to it is a trail that leads to the forest, where Ben and I started numerous meditation walks. The woods are a part of my host family's property. They have developed orchards of fruit-bearing trees, a vineyard, and a wooded paintball field on that land. Fresh jams, made from the fruit, were a delightful part of my daily breakfasts.

The first day I was there, Ben and I walked into those woods and took me through his opening rituals for the retreat. I was expecting the first day to be an adaptation day, since I had come in from a long day/night of travel, so I was surprised. However, it was very reaffirming to start, in that way – to discuss both our intentions and to establish our in-person rapport.

We sat in an open area, on a mound of dried, cracked dirt in a clearing – looking out on a cloudful sky and my host's grape vines. It settled me in and set the mood instantly. Already, I knew, in my heart of hearts, that this would be a special experience I would take with me throughout my life.

The newly restored Gloger organ in Kongsberg Church is the largest Organ from the Baroque Era in the Nordic countries. With its magnificent front and beautiful sound, it has become a national cultural treasure. The original Organ was built by the German organ builder Gottfried Heinrich Gloger in 1765, but was taken out of use by the end of the 19th century. The following years, the church had various organs, among them an instrument claimed to be the restored original, but this was in fact a wholly new instrument with only the facade intact. By 2001 the organ was fully restored to its old glory by German builder Jürgen Ahrend, partially with original Gloger pipes. Thus, the instrument of today has recreated the authentic sounds of old.

Last night we went to Walle (in the Bremen area, in Germany), to ice-skate at Paradice. I had an amazing time and we had Glühwein and hot chocolate during brief breaks. Ice-skating was so cool! there were so many people on the ring!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glühwein is usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, citrus and sugar. Almonds and raisins are often added to the Scandinavian version, though not to the German. I personally love the almond version!!!

Glögg is the term for mulled wine in the Nordic countries and Estonia (sometimes misspelled as glog or glug); in (Swedish and Icelandic: Glögg, Norwegian and Danish: Gløgg, Finnish and Estonian: Glögi). Glögg may also be, and is often, prepared without alcohol.

In Romania it is called vin fiert ("boiled wine"), and can be made using either red or white wine, sometimes adding peppercorn. In Moldova the izvar is made from red wine with black pepper and honey. In Italy, mulled wine is typical in the northern part of the country.

The middle school winners: Kathryn Johnson, Ava Saydam, Lauren McClure, Peyton Krebs are pictured here presenting their GLOG interactive virtual poster, and explaining their innovative process they used to come up with a technology spinoff using Goddard technology that makes the world a better place.
