"Globular clusters are nearly spherical collections of hundreds of thousands of stars, held together by mutual gravitational attraction. These beautiful objects are nearly free of gas and dust, and contain some of the oldest stars in a galaxy.

The Milky Way is host to around 150 known globular clusters, and a few more are likely to exist hidden behind the thick disk of our galaxy. The number of globular clusters in a given galaxy seems to depend on its mass: the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest big galactic neighbour, has over 400 clusters, while the giant elliptical galaxy M87 is home to more than ten thousand."

Pictured below is the Hercules globular cluster - M13 cropped and an uncropped version showing annotation of all the distant galaxies in the field of view.

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are the largest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and, unlike the rest of the satellite galaxies, are still actively forming stars — and at a rapid pace.

When working on this image I was intrigued to spot many galaxies in the background. They are everywhere. I’ve numbered a few in this image.

After some time away from capturing these fascinating objects, I decided to return to them with renewed focus: globular star clusters. These are some of the oldest stellar systems in the universe. Here is the largest and brightest one in the night sky: Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). Visible to the naked eye and located relatively close to the Southern Cross, it lies about 15,800 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus. It contains over 10 million stars packed into a dense, spherical swarm.

M2 is a globular cluster in the constellation Aquarius, discovered by Jean-Dominique Maraldi in 1746. It is one of the largest known globular clusters. M2 is about 55,000 light years from earth and contains about 150,000 stars in an area 175 lights years across. Its brightest stars are red and yellow giant stars. This is a stack of 57 exposures at 3 minutes - for a total of about 2.85 hrs of imaging time taken with a Sky-Watcher Esprit 100ED telescope and a QHY-268C OSC. Stacking and image processing with Siril, GraXpert, and Adobe Photoshop.

Taken with my new refractor. This is the second brightest globular cluster in the sky, and it contains millions of stars.

M22 Globular Cluster (NGC 6656), known as the Sagittarius Cluster, is located about 10,600 light-years away and is one of the brightest. It had been a while since I had photographed objects of this type because I didn't really like my processing of them. This is the first one that I've truly liked! As they are very bright objects, I can capture them from home in the city (Bortle 8), so I'm starting a catalog of these objects.
