I think the purple blooms are two globe thistles with the background one past its prime.

I've been trying to catch a drop for some time like this. This is the first one. I'm quite happy with it. :D

I'd like to thank Lord V for some great tips on his photostream and from him in person. What a nice man!

Echinops is a genus of about 120 species of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as globe thistles. They have spiny foliage and produce blue or white spherical flower heads. They are native to Europe, east to central Asia, and south to the mountains of tropical Africa. Globe thistle is the host plant of weevil Larinus vulpes.

I realize it's a stretch, but that's what the magic does.

Not really all that private up on this perch these days. But it's still a relaxing view.

Another specfies of Glob Mallow that does well here. This particular mallow was spread horizontally and vertically over a 15 square foot patch and wasn't at all pleasing until I found this bunch where a horizontal presentation seemed best. It is a beautiful flower, but very with very rangy stems and no much "planning" by nature gone into the floral groups.

Sphaeralcea is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family (Malvaceae). There are about 40-60 species, including annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Most originate in the drier regions of North America, with some known from South America. They are commonly known as globemallows, globe mallows, or falsemallows. The name of the genus is derived from the Greek words σφαῖρα (sphaira), meaning "sphere," and αλκεα (alkea), meaning "mallow."

The leaves of these plants are spirally arranged, and usually palmate or toothed. Both stems and leaves are downy. Like other Malvaceae, the flowers are saucer- or cup-shaped, with the stamens joined into a column in the center.

Sphaeralcea species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Schinia olivacea, which has been recorded on S. lindheimeri.

"Globe Thistle Glory" by Patti Deters. Purple spherical flowers of the Globe Thistle (Echinops) bloom atop slender stems in a classic case of juxtaposition in nature - soft colors and foliage, sharp pointed petals. The violet hues contrast beautifully with the muted sage greens and grays of the leaves of these perennial garden plants. Wildflower varieties can often be seen along the roadsides in late summer. Did you know Echinops comes from Greek words meaning “round-headed with the appearance of a hedgehog”? Thank you for viewing this picture.
