140 Broadway. The building accommodates the oldest and largest private bank in the United States.

Behind these windows money and politics could have tea...

A mad view of the city of London.

"Red Cube" by Isamu Noguchi (1968). Red painted steel, located at 140 Broadway in front of the former HSBC high-rise designed by Skidmore Owings Merrill (completed 1967). The building now accommodates the oldest and largest private bank in the United States.

I cannot think of a more appropriate icon for global finance in the light of the 2008 financial crisis. And at the very heart of global finance it is, just around the corner of Wall St.

High in the Andes Mountains of Peru lie the ruins of Machu Picchu, the historic royal retreat of the Inca empire. The indigenous people still farm this valley. Eusebio Mendez Atau and his family farm the land as did Eusebios father and grandfather for the last 100 years.

The Lloyds building, the Gherkin and the Willis building, some of the most representative corporate office buildings in the City of London, UK.

RAN turned out thousands of activists in more than 50 cities across the U.S. to protest Citi and Bank of America’s investments in new coal-fired power plants and dirty coal extraction methods such as mountaintop removal coal mining. RAN is pressuring the two banks to divest from coal and invest in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

The National Day of Action – organized by RAN, Coal River Mountain Watch, Appalachian Voices, Rising Tide North America, Mountain Justice Summer, Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC), Energy Justice Network and others – featured everything from flyering and leafletting at local bank branches and ATMs to creative street theater and non-violent direct action at bank offices. Cities in which actions took place included San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Portland, St. Louis, Denver, Chicago, Boston and Houston.

Forever etched in my memory. The sadness returns each year. I don't know why I do it to myself but every September 11th, I log onto the various websites that are running footage, photo archives, compilations, etc. I sit there and soak a handkerchief with a pound of tears and snot, get it out of my system, but never completely and never for long.

I'm proud to say that in 1970, I worked on Liberty Island in a food concession right behind the Statue and in 1972-73, while working as a copyboy in the Financial News section of the NY Times, I did my "downtown run" to several banks, Reuter's News Agency on the 57th floor of Tower 1 and Office of Statisticians so I could get all that paperwork (before computers took control) back to the Statisticians at the Times to make their deadline for the Sunday News.
