Took this shot outside Glin village. This is the Shannon Estuary. The river Shannon enters the Atlantic ocean about 15 miles from here. This stretch of water is a photographer's dream. It never looks the same on any two consecutive evenings.
De winter is deze week grillig. Nadat we eerst werden getrakteerd op een mooi sneeuwtapijt — waarvan ik op Driekoningen nog kon profiteren om enkele “treinen in winterlandschap”-foto’s te maken — kregen we op woensdag 7 januari zelfs nog een extra laag sneeuw over ons heen.
Vandaag, 8 januari 2026, is het witte goed echter volop aan het smelten, als voorbode van de stormdepressie die morgen, 9 januari, over ons land zal trekken en — in Vlaanderen althans — gepaard zal gaan met veel regen. Niet meteen weer om eropuit te trekken dus.
Dan kijk ik liever nog eens terug naar de laatste dagen van december 2025, die baadden in zonneschijn. Nadat ik de Ouigo in Jurbise had vastgelegd, hobbelde ik verder naar Ghlin — letterlijk, als je ooit de weg door het bos vanuit Erbisoeul hebt genomen — om daar op de goederenkoer te wachten op de tegentrein vanuit Parijs.
Door het bochtige tracé van lijn 96 is dit trouwens één van de weinige plekken waar je overdag treinen van Parijs naar Brussel met frontlicht kunt vastleggen. Je moet er de zendmast wel bijnemen, maar hé… die hoort intussen gewoon bij het hedendaagse spoorweglandschap.

Winter weather has been rather fickle this week. After we were first treated to a fine blanket of snow — which allowed me to make a few “trains in a winter landscape” photos on Epiphany — an additional layer of snow followed on Wednesday, 7 January.
Today, 8 January 2026, the white scenery is already melting away, as a prelude to the storm depression that will cross our country tomorrow, 9 January, and — at least in Flanders — will be accompanied by plenty of rain. Hardly weather that invites one to head outdoors.
So instead, I prefer to look back at the final days of December 2025, which were bathed in sunshine. After photographing the Ouigo at Jurbise, I continued on to Ghlin — quite literally bouncing along, if you have ever taken the forest road from Erbisoeul — to wait on the freight yard for the opposing train coming from Paris.
Thanks to the curving alignment of line 96, this is actually one of the few locations where daytime shots of Paris–Brussels trains with front lighting are possible. You do have to accept the presence of the telecom mast, but hey… that has simply become part of today’s railway landscape.

OTC 65 Paris Nord - Brussel Zuid
This is the Gatehouse of Glin Castle, a Georgian country house located along the River Shannon in Glin, County Limerick, Ireland. The castle has belonged to the FitzGerald family for over seven hundred years and was the seat of the Knights of Glin.
The Castle was purchased by Catherine FitzGerald, daughter of the last Knight of Glin, and her husband Dominic West, the actor.
Elke zondagmorgen rijdt Lineas een intermodale trein tussen Zeebrugge en Segrate (I). De trein wordt beladen op de containerterminal van C.RO, aan het Brittanniadok. De route in België durft wel eens te veranderen van weekend tot weekend. Soms gaat de trein via Erquelinnes, andere zondagen dan weer via Quévy. Wellicht liggen infrastructuurwerken van Infrabel hier aan de basis. Op zondag 24 oktober werd een plan bedacht om de meestal kleurrijke containertrein 40304 in de buitenbocht van Ghlin, tussen Jurbise en Mons, op foto te zetten. Er werd gehoopt wat herfstkleuren aan te treffen. Het was echter al meer dan een half jaar geleden dat ik hier nog eens geweest was. Vaak veranderen de spoorbermen in een halfjaar tijd enorm.
Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. ‘s Morgens reed ik samen met een kameraad naar Ghlin om de trein op te wachten. Bij aankomst werd het vermoeden bevestigd; de berm was inmiddels gigantisch opgeschoten, waardoor een foto bijna niet meer mogelijk was. In het voorjaar was alles nog fris gekapt. Gelukkig waren we ruimschoots op tijd aangekomen. Er was nog voldoende tijd om de berm onder handen te nemen, zodat we niet verder op zoek moesten gaan naar een ander plekje. Gewapend met een snoei- en takkenschaar werd in de struiken gevlogen om te beginnen snoeien. Niet veel later kwam Bram ons toevallig ook vergezellen en hielp wat mee met de werkzaamheden. Hoe klein is het wereldje toch!?
Een halfuurtje voor doorkomst waren we klaar en zocht elk van ons zijn positie om de trein vast te leggen. Omstreeks 12:19 kwam de 1327 vanuit Zeebrugge voorbij met een kleurrijke Segrate-shuttle onderweg richting de Artère Nord-Est. Het harde snoeiwerk leverde een heel mooi resultaat op.

Corentin Cauwelier heeft onlangs op zijn photostream een foto gedeeld die hij in Ghlin had gemaakt. Na wat opzoekingswerk, bleek dit punt zich in de buurt van de hippodroom te bevinden. De zonnestand leek gunstig voor de Ouigo, die om 13:38 uit Brussel-Zuid vertrekt richting Franse hoofdstad. Zo werd er op 29 april — een van de talrijke zonnige dagen die het voorjaar van 2025 rijk was — tijdens de middagpauze naar daar afgereisd.
Ik had achteraf gezien beter mijn hoogstatief meegenomen, maar na wat zoeken vond ik toch een plekje langs de baandam van waaruit ik op gewone hoogte (wat bij mij toch nog steeds zo’n kleine twee meter is) een goede foto kon maken.
De komst van de trein werd vooraf gemeld vanuit Neufvilles, waar Wouter stond te wachten. Zo wist ik al op voorhand dat loc 1870 voor de sleep zat — eindelijk dus eens de reclameloc te pakken voor deze leuke trein!
Oh ja, boshyacinten zijn typisch voor het Hallerbos dicht bij mijn woonplaats, maar ook hier was het heerlijk genieten van de geur van deze bloemetjes in het Bois Brûlé, zoals dit bos ook genoemd wordt.

Corentin Cauwelier recently posted a photo taken in Ghlin. After some checking I learned the spot is near the local horse racetrack. The lighting looked perfect for the Ouigo service that leaves Brussels Midi at 13:38 for Paris, so on April 29 (one of many sunny spring days in 2025), I headed there during my lunch break.
In hindsight, I should’ve brought my tall tripod — but after some scouting, I found a good spot along the embankment that worked from normal height (which for me is still close to two metres!).
Thanks to Wouter reporting from Neufvilles, I already knew 1870 would be leading — finally caught the advertising loco on this eye-catching service!
Oh, and by the way — while bluebells are a typical sight in the Hallerbos near my hometown, it was also a real treat to enjoy their fragrance here in the Bois Brûlé, as this little forest is also known.

OTC 54 Brussel Zuid - Paris Nord
Na heel wat jaren roest te hebben verzameld, is L242 (een aftakking van L100) sinds dit jaar eindelijk regelmatig bereden. Onregelmatig wordt er bij "Deschieter" een M7 motorbak op de rails gezet, en verder afgevoerd achter een 77. Sinds enige tijd is daar ook een trein beladen met sinterdolomiet uit Hochfilzen (AT) bijgekomen, en wordt ook bij Deschieter behandeld in Ghlin (B). De trein rijdt erg onregelmatig, maar op 25 Juni 2024 werd er een lege trein opgehaald, en opgesteld in Saint-Ghislain (B). Lineas 7825 is met de lege trein 27741 onderweg bij Ghlin (B) naar Criquelion Faisceau (B) en na kopmaken verder naar Saint-Ghislain (B).

Ganden Monastery (also Gaden or Gandain) or Ganden Namgyeling is one of the 'great three' Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet, located at the top of Wangbur Mountain, Tagtse County, 36 kilometers ENE from the Potala Palace in Lhasa, at an altitude of 4,750m. (The other two 'great monasteries' are Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery.)
Its full name is dGa' ldan rNam rgyal gling or dGan-ldan rNam-par Gyal-wahi glin ("Continent of completely victorious happiness").
It was the original monastery of the Geluk order, founded by Je Tsongkhapa himself in 1409, and traditionally considered to be the seat of Geluk administrative and political power. The Ganden Tripa or 'throne-holder of Ganden' is the head of the Gelukpa school.

My friend and her fiance' just moved to their new house in Glin. What a beautiful view they have in the back garden.
Wind turbines ahead of a vast area of peat bog close to our new home in north Kerry, although this location is actually in Limerick so close are we to the border. Looking for a suitable place to walk my dog Willow I came across this track recently not knowing if there was anything worth pointing my camera at - the light yesterday was enough reason on its own and so this hastily arranged composition was born. In my mind's eye I can also see the scene in snow (assuming we get snow in these parts) - but that's for later. Or perhaps not much later! The 'Burma Road' title was given to me by a pub landlord (O'Shaughnessys) from the nearby coastal village of Glin who also shared other local history snippets over a delicious pint of Guinness in his wonderful bar the other day. It was all work of course!
