There had been a summer thunderstorm shortly before this picture was taken. The resulting run-off created these rivulets on their way to the Genesee River.

The historic Glen Iris Inn, located on the top of a cliff overlooking Middle Falls in Letchworth State Park, is the former home of businessman (and founder of Letchworth State Park) William Pryor Letchworth (1823-1910).

This fountain by the Glen Iris Inn in Letchworth SP is always fascinating to visit in the winter and early spring. The ice buildup was undoubtedly much higher than this since we have had a lot of "melt days" recently. It was really fun to walk around this piece of evolving sculpture. At every turn it looked different. I took lots of other pictures, one of which can be seen below.

taken with my phone..."real" photos later.....

The Middle Falls of the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park, generally considered the most impressive of the three cataracts in Letchworth State Park known collectively as Portage Falls, drops 107-feet from a 285-foot wide crest. The Seneca Indians believed that the sun stopped at midday to gaze in awe at the great beauty of Ska-ga-dee (the Middle Falls).

Letchworth State Park, a 14,427-acre park following along a 17 mile stretch of the Genesee River as it flows north through a deep gorge and over several large waterfalls called Portage Falls. The territory of the park was long part of the homeland of the Seneca people, which they called Sehgahunda, the "Vale of the three falls," until they were forced north into Canada following the Revolutionary War. In 1859, Buffalo industrialist William Pryor Letchworth began purchasing land around Middle Falls, where he build his Glen Iris Estate. In 1906, he bequeathed the 1,000-acre estate to the state, which became the core of the newly created public park. In 1914, Letchworth's home was made into a country inn, offering in-season meals and overnight accommodations.

This is what the fountain next to the Glen Iris Inn in Letchworth SP usually ends up looking like on all sides when winter is over. A frozen, then thawing cone, more or less like this all around.

But as you can see below the thaw has produced some really remarkable sculptures as spring arrives.

Taken on our daytrip to "The Grand Canyon Of The East" Letchworth State Park. This is the fountain located at the Goldfish pond at the Glen Iris Inn.

With no temperature cold enough to add any more ice onto this fountain at the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park, I guess this now-dirty accumulation will start receding. See below to see where it stood in January.....
