The Letchworth "Geyser" is a natural spring on the grounds of the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park. During the winter it forms a tall ice column, already well melted by the time I took this photo. It is a beautiful spot year round.

The Middle Falls of the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park is the largest of the three major falls and is 107 feet high and 285 feet wide. It has changed very little over the years because of its many hard resistant sandstones. The Seneca Indians believed that the great beauty of Ska-ga-dee, the Middle Falls, inspired the sun to stop at midday at the wonder of it all. Print Size 13x19 inches.

The "ice volcano" formed by the freezing of the fountain outside of the Glen Iris Inn in Letchworth State Park in Upstate New York.

Thought the sign was rather amusing but I suppose if there wasn't a sign someone would try...

Stairs in the Glen Iris Inn, Letchworth State Park, New York.

The Park is not far off I-90, so if yo're not in a big hurry as you travel across NY it's worth a stop. The rooms at the in vary in price, but the food is first class. The grounds around the Inn area awash in flowers.

Some of you probably remember this item from last year. It's the always running fountain in a small lily pond next to the stately Glen Iris Inn. Here in late January it is just getting started creating an ice sculpture, the dimensions of which dependin on the climate, especially the wind, which as you can see was pretty fierce yesterday. See below for what it looked like in late March of last year from the porch of the Glen Iris Inn...

NO INVITES PLEASE

Only a tiny segment of the park was open, mostly for snowmobilers and skiers today. It was so cold that I gave no thought to venturing to any other vantage point at the Middle Falls near the Glen Iris Inn.

CASTILE, N.Y. -- The arctic conditions have turned a geyser at a state park in western New York into a five-story-tall "ice volcano."

The geyser is in a pond near the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park, which straddles the Wyoming-Livingston county line 40 miles south of Rochester. Days of subzero temperatures have formed a solid cone of ice several feet thick with water still spouting out of the top.

Park officials tell local media that the formation dubbed an ice volcano is at least 50 feet high.

Winter is normally a quiet season for the park, known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" for its scenic gorges, but dozens of people are showing up daily to see the frozen wonder while it lasts. www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2015/02/ice_volcano_forms...

Designed by architect William Webster as a home for William Pryor Letchworth, the Glen Iris estate was later bequeathed to New York State. Today it forms a focal point of Letchworth State Park and has a hotel and restaurant.

Located near Castile, New York, USA this park has been designated a couple of times as the best state park in the US. This pic shows the railroad trestle (which has been replaced with an arch style trestle), upper falls and middle falls. This is the Genesee River which runs from Pennsylvania to Lake Ontario. The state park runs 17 miles from Portageville to Mount Morris in western New York.

The Glen Iris Inn is in Letchworth State Park ... had a wonderful dinner there last night so off we went for dessert tonight....we were not disappointed.

I've photographed this fountain jet in winter, when it creates a giant stalagmite of ice. But on this late summer evening, the setting sun casts tree shadows on the mist surrounding the jet.

This was the original home of William Pryor Letchworth, who donated the land for the park to New York State. His home now contains a gift shop and restaurant.

The autumn decorations around this front door look like they were designed by Martha Stewart.

Letchworth State Park is in Wyoming County in beautiful Upstate New York, about an hour's drive south of Rochester.

The gorge was carved by the Genesee River, the unfrozen remnant is visible in this picture. The frozen falls aren't available in this crop.

The stonework in the foreground courtesy of the Civilian Conservation Corps; the yellow building in the back is the Glen Iris Inn.

Technical Details:

* stitched with Hugin from 21 images, cropped to fit.

* taken with a Nikon D90

* handheld, no tripod or fancy panoramic head

* helped by bright overcast conditions, I took a sample shot in aperture priority to set the exposure.

Unfortunately rejected for the Perfect Panoramas group; I'm not sure that all of the stitching errors cited are real (the lamp post in particular seems to be a tree behind the lamp, not an error), but I also doubt I have the time to go back and fix them, if that's even possible.

The Glen Iris Inn, William Pryor Letchworth's former home, is located on the top of a cliff overlooking Middle Falls in Letchworth State Park, New York State, USA. William Letchworth found the day-to-day operations of business burdensome and so sought refuge from the business world and decided to build a home; he settled on the location while as a tourist gazing at the view in what the Seneca Indians called the Sehgahunda Valley through which the Genesee River flowed. In 1859 he purchased his first tract of land near Portage Falls.

Letchworth hired noted landscape architect William Webster to design the grounds of the estate, which Letchworth named Glen Iris after the Greek goddess of rainbows.[1] Webster and some special guests would eventually plant huge varieties of differing trees and flowing bushes throughout the park, including white and red pines, oaks, and dogwoods.

He bequeathed his 1,000-acre (4 km2) estate to New York[clarification needed] in 1906, which now forms the heart of Letchworth State Park. In 1914 Letchworth's home became a country inn and grew to become the center of a thriving state park.

You can see this was an appropriate name for Letchworth's estate from the shots just prior to this one in the photostream.

From this perspective, this rainbow coming off the mist of the middle falls rises up and ends at the left at the overview from the lawn at the Glen Iris Inn.

By the time I got up there, the pot of gold was gone though....

A powerful fountain next to the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park shoots a hundred feet into the air in the summertime. In winter, it creates a 20-foot high cone of ice.

I've never seen such delicate imagery in a stained glass window before.

The Glen Iris Inn, located on the top of a cliff overlooking Middle Falls in Letchworth State Park, was originally built by Alvah Palmer in 1828. In 1832, Michael Smith and his business partner purchased the Palmer property with an eye towards turning it into a tourist destination. William Pryor Letchworth, a Buffalo industrialist, acquired the house and surrounding property in 1859, protecting the area from industrialization. He hired noted landscape artist William Webster to design the grounds of the estate, which he named Glen Iris after the Greek goddess of rainbows. In 1906, he bequeathed the 1,000-acre estate to the state, which became the core of the newly created Letchworth State Park. Letchworth's former home has has welcomed guests as a country inn since 1914.

Letchworth State Park, a 14,427-acre park following along a 17 mile stretch of the Genesee River as it flows north through a deep gorge and over several large waterfalls called Portage Falls. The territory of the park was long part of the homeland of the Seneca people, which they called Sehgahunda, the "Vale of the three falls," until they were forced north into Canada following the Revolutionary War.

We've had some very warm weather, so this beautiful frozen fountain outside the Glen Iris Inn was probably a lot bigger at one time.
