We spent a few days in Jasper National Park to see the Elk rut. We were last there for the rut 4 years ago and saw quite a few more Elk. But I was very happy with what we did see. We only saw 1 other bull in the forest. When we stopped by the roadside, security told us that he had a habit of ramming cars so, when he started walking toward us, we made a hasty retreat.

I read a very interesting article that states during the rut, the bull opens a slit near the eye to reveal a gland which secretes pheromones to attract a mate. I believe this photo shows that eye slit.

Aquarelle et autre magie, art digital

It's been very windy, dark and rainy here, but not really very cold. So I spent most of my time in the Hortus in the desert glass house looking at Euphorbias.

Here on Crown of Thorns is one of those all-pervasive wonderful Marmalade Hoverflies. It's not after pollen but lapping sweets directly from Flower's nectar glands.

Bokeh performed through the foliage of the oak under which I placed a mirror

This long term exposure (300 sec.) has been taken at the very beginning of the sunrise. A pure moment of peacefulness on a very still lake with no wind.

In 1979 Abraham Hefetz, Henry M. Fales and Suzanna W.T. Batra in Science discussed the wonders of our Plasterer Bee - sometimes aptly called: Cellophane Bee - and her Dufour's Gland. The secretions from that gland are used to transparently coat the inner surface of solitary Colletes' burrow nest to make it not only waterproof and resistant. They also work as a fungicide and bacteriacide. The gland is named for Léon Jean Marie Dufour (1780-1865) who first described it. Colletes doesn't lay her eggs on the nest floor. There it might be too damp but she affixes them to the safe, 'plastic' walls.

No fear for damp on this hot and dry day as I walked my favorite circuit in the Meuse Corridor. I saw this Plasterer Bee gathering pollen on a preferred foraging ground, Common Tansy, Tanacetum vulgare.

Almost all birds, with a few exceptions, have these glands from which they spread oil over their feathers.

The name Dik Dik comes from the sound that the females make when alarmed. These calls alert other animals to predators. This is the smallest antelope found in East and South Africa. They have a characteristic black spot in front of the eye which contains a gland – they rub the gland against grasses to mark territory. I consider these small antelopes among the prettiest animals I encountered.

This shot has been taken right after the sunrise. The long exposure made the clouds stretch in perspective and the lake a perfect mirror. It was a very pleasant and peaceful moment to be outside shooting. December reveals amazing light and weather conditions.

Enjoying the last seconds of low light before the sun rise, on a very calm lake, while days are getting longer.

Cloudy skies at sunrise are the best opportunities to see the lake as a giant mirror. I wish I arrived 10 min earlier to capture the low light... I will definitely go back to that place and find better light conditions.

8.45 A.M. The sun just went out from behind the mountains. The sunlight is very intense and get diffused in the mist. I wanted the lake silky and try to capture this gorgeous light. The use of filters was justified. I decided to close the diaphragm at mid-range f/11 to allow a quite long exposure and keep enough of this magic light.

Also curious about what that remarkable opening under the eye of a male red deer actually is? It intrigued me and I took a quick look at Wikipedia, and...

This is what is being described (difficult words, just look them up)

The preorbital gland is a paired exocrine gland found in many species of hoofed animals, which is homologous to the lacrimal gland found in humans. These glands are trenchlike slits of dark blue to black, nearly bare skin extending from the medial canthus of each eye. They are lined by a combination of sebaceous and sudoriferous glands, and they produce secretions which contain pheromones and other semiochemical compounds.[1] Ungulates frequently deposit these secretions on twigs and grass as a means of communication with other animals.[2][3]

The preorbital gland serves different roles in different species. Pheromone-containing secretions from the preorbital gland may serve to establish an animal's dominance (especially in preparation for breeding),[4] mark its territory, or simply to produce a pleasurable sensation to the animal.[5] Because of its critical role in scent marking, the preorbital gland is usually considered as a type of scent gland. A further function of these glands may be to produce antimicrobial compounds to fight against skin pathogens. Antimicrobial compounds found in these glands may be biosynthesized by the animal itself, or by microorganisms that live in these glands.[6]

(Bron Wikipedia)

Watching the sun set is always something amazing. The Good thing with long exposures, you can fully enjoy the show with both eyes and simply appreciate it.

The opposite French side of the lake was not visible that day. These weather conditions gave a feeling of an endless perspective that is usually reserved for the ocean.
