♪♫♬Let me back it up to the start of the climb
Faced with an army of vipers and lions
I had to keep on reaching up 'cause it was my time
To tear down the kingdom and call out the liars
Got a jail on my heart from the pessimists
Got those nails in my mouth for impressionists
Spent too much money on a therapist
Couldn't fix me, I accepted it
Gladiator, gladiator, gladiator
Picked a fight with the gods I'm the giant slayer
Bone shaker, dominator
Freight train, wrecking ball, I'm the gladiator
Tell me what it is that you think you believe
Caught in a cross fire. Trouble at sea
Every single day I feel that gold underneath
I see the locked doors but I got the key
Imma give you a second just to catch your breath
'Cause I can see that your heart is jumpin' out your chest
I know you gave it all, 'cause I've already seen your best
It is time you accepted this
Gladiator, gladiator, gladiator
Picked a fight with the gods I'm the giant slayer
Bone shaker, dominator
Freight train, wrecking ball, I'm the gladiator
I've got every reason to fight
I've got every reason to fight
Have you ever shaken hands with the devil in the night?
Let me tell ya
I've got every reason to fight

A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death.
Irrespective of their origin, gladiators offered spectators an example of Rome's martial ethics and, in fighting or dying well, they could inspire admiration and popular acclaim. They were celebrated in high and low art, and their value as entertainers was commemorated in precious and commonplace objects throughout the Roman world.

Maritime Museum and the Bucklers Hard Story, Buckler's Hard, Hampshire
HMS Gladiator was a 44-gun fifth-rate Roebuck-class ship of the Royal Navy. She was launched on 20 January 1783 by Henry Adams of Bucklers Hard. She spent her entire career on harbour service, never putting to sea. Even so, her crew earned prize money for the seizure of two Russian and five American ships. Her sessile existence made her an excellent venue for courts-martial and a number of notable ones took place aboard her. She was broken up in 1817.
Another dip into the archives captures diesel-hydraulic D1016 'Western Gladiator' arriving at Westbury with a rake of what looks like empty hoppers. The train terminated here, at least temporarily, seeing as D1016 was snapped later on light engine.
Released to traffic from Swindon Works in February 1963 she would be withdrawn from service in December 1975, some 20 months after this shot was taken. Her service life was just under 13 years - hardly a great return on the tax-payers investment, but rather better than the criminally short 5 years achieved by 9F steam locomotive 'Evening Star' the decade before in the overly hasty project to eliminate steam traction on the UK network.
The title refers to the then extensive use of BRUTE trollies on station platforms for storing / conveying parcels - a reminder of how much traffic was handled for the Post Office in the 1970s. Just the single one here, no doubt awaiting a train heading west - at the larger stations such as Bristol and Crewe you could often barely swing cat for the number of BRUTES present. That said, at least the empty ones gave the humble trainspotter somewhere to sit and eat lunch unencumbered by other members of the travelling public, and often in prime viewing positions too.
I was experimenting with different films at the time and decided to give this Perutz offering a trial. I didn't stick with the emulsion but have been impressed by how it has held its colour after 48 years - including a three week stint in a container at steamy Savannah Port which saw off at least one item of furniture.
Not the best 'Western' shot I've ever uploaded, but I figured it might be worth a run out.

The long way home:
The road from Terrapille to Pieve di Corsignano and Pienza, was the theater of some of the most wonderful scenes of the film “The Gladiator” by Ridley Scott
The last biplane fighter to enter service with the RAF in the late 1930s, the Gloster Gladiator was already obsolescent and ordered as a stop gap in case of delays to the much more capable Spitfires and Hurricanes then in development.
The Gladiator had a very sprightly performance for a biplane, and despite being so outdated, many hundreds were built and saw much service during WW2 with a wide variety of Air Forces. They generally acquitted themselves surprisingly well - notably in the defence of Malta, where they attained a legendary status. A myth formed that three Gladiators, respectively named Faith, Hope and Charity, provided the Island's entire air cover during the Siege of Malta in 1940. It's not entirely true, but a good story is better than the reality!
One of only two remaining airworthy, this example is owned by The Shuttleworth Collection and seen here displaying at its home base of Old Warden.
A typical scene from Tuscany with cypresses along the way to the final farmhouse.
In this area some parts of the film Gladiator were shooted.
