My Mother’s Day Gift! Good for Mother Nature and I know my Mom will be proud! She raised me to love and respect nature, animals, and other people. Thanks Mom! Maybe people who frequent the pond and the viewing deck down at the Expressway Park will notice the difference and think twice before they trash it up again. That would be a wonderful gift. I keep thinking about the impact of that tiny paperclip on our Sandhill Crane family, and I want to do more!

I put bags on my feet, and then an old pair of crocs, and rubber gloves. It was very squishy in places, and you can see my deep foot prints in the upper right corner of the “after” shot. At one point, I went down into the mud past my knee. I thought I was going to lose that croc for sure, which of course I wouldn’t miss the ugly old croc, but I would be ADDING debris instead of removing it. Luckily, I got myself unstuck. Worst part was, it was at that point, that I kind of smelled manure, and I realized that end of the pond gets some feed of water and debris from the cattle paddy across the street through the drains that run under them. So yeah, I was up past my knee in a manure mud mixture. Honest to goodness, I just shook my head and laughed. It’s not as though I’m a stranger to Cow Poop, having worked on a Dairy Farm when I was a teen. The entire escapade made me happy. When I got home, my husband hosed me off, LOL!! I couldn’t wait to get out of those crocs!

So Sheba, (my mom’s nickname), here’s what I picked up around the pond for you and Mother Nature today for Mother’s Day 2009!

6 Budweiser Cans

2 Bud Light Cans

6 Miller Lite Cans – sadly there was one more that I could not reach.

3 Coors Light Cans

1 Wide Mouth Plastic Miller Lite Bottle

2 other brown Wide Mouth Bottles no label.

2 Pepsi Bottles 20 oz or so

1 two liter Pepsi bottle

1 Red Bull Can

1 Monster Energy Drink

4 Mountain Dew Cans (and Mountain Dew has such a nature sounding name!)

2 Mountain Dew Bottles

2 Coke Classic Cans

1 Zephyrhills Water Bottle with pull spout

6 Gatorade Bottles Plastic – (I’m sure gators really enjoy swimming with their plastic namesakes)

1 Yogurt Drink with active cultures bottle, (how healthy for your colon you big LITTERBUG!!!)

1 Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail bottle, plastic

1 Capri Sun Juice bag thingy

1 lip gloss – Frosted Peach

4 plastic bottle caps, 2 from fitness water, 1 Gatorade and 1 from bottled water

1 Empty bag of Ruffles Potato Chips

1 Quaker Chewy something wrapper

1 piece of plastic coated electrical wire

1 Nerf Football – quite heavy when soaked with water.

1 empty Scott’s Bonus S Lawn Fertilizer and Weed Killer Bag – Plastic

1 empty nursery pot, black.

1 beer glass, about 20oz size.

1 Pair Size 12 Men’s Inline Skates, Black (I’m imagining someone who fell, for the last time, throwing them one at a time into the pond! They were 20 yards from each other.)

The end of the pond that I cleaned up, is normally under water, so this was an opportunity to take advantage of what the dry time has exposed and get it out of there! I've never seen an alligator in this pond, but it's so dry now, and they can move around because of it, so I did not wade in, which is why I had to leave one Miller Lite can behind.

PLEASE DON'T LITTER!! PLEASE!!! The tiniest thing you discard could impact wildlife negatively and can often be fatal.

I visit this place in late June each year, with the notion of bushwhacking ever so slowly higher and higher to the waters source. These waters spill down from the High Divide area in the Olympics and the melting snow from there, keeps this creek flowing ever so well. Guess I am searching for something, but I am not certain what it is just yet. I think I know, but these matters are best left alone for just now.

The ancient forest stands tall and has a welcoming way about it. All around me, is a natural, calming beauty that beckons one to move ever so slow. My time here always rekindles my spirit. It serves as a reminder of important things that have occurred in the past and for all the definitive moments that may lay ahead for me.

There is a sure and steady integrity of purpose for me when I am here. The clarity and joy that I see and feel amid this special place is never nonchalant or a fallacy of the heart. It is real and tangible beyond words really. Perceptions and insights be what they are, I will allow myself to completely surrender to the notion that this place is like a home to me.

With no property taxes :)

Particularly since 9-11, my fellows Americans commonly address all law enforcement personnel, including firefighters, as HEROES. Whether you agree with this or not, I can tell you I truly believe these guys, for their work ethic, courage and commitment, should bring home more money than any politician in Washington. And I know they are not. (Shot today in my neighborhood)

When it comes to the holidays I've always felt for the people who are alone or really struggling in life.

I'm doin' alright...

I've got a good job...

my own home...

a wonderful family.

I've got everything I need and except for all of the rushing around during the holidays I really like to settle in and enjoy them with the people I love.

Seeing other people who aren't so fortunate is always moving at this time of year.

I get a little softer and make sure I'm carrying some small bills with me when I'm walking around.

Money doesn't mean that much to me...

maybe that's 'cause I've almost got enough of it and I'll probably get some more next week.

But a couple of bucks can mean so much to someone with nothing.

I don't care if they go across to the street to the bar and knock back a few with it...

I know I would...

I'd hafta numb the pain...

warm up from the cold...

escape the brutal realities of life for a moment.

Not that my life doesn't have any brutal realities.

I've got a few of those too...

it's just that I'm not gonna be cold and hungry tonight.

What I try to do more than throw a couple of Washingtons into their cups is to talk with them for a moment...

share a laugh and acknowledge them as a human being and an equal.

I've seen that light them up more than anything.

When a homeless guy insists on buying you coffee...

or buys you a drink...

he's relating to you as an equal.

It means something to every human being to be treated that way.

This guy had only one leg and he sat in a wheelchair on the corner of some of the priciest real estate in the city lookin' for 'spare change.'

It was cold out and we talked for a couple of minutes.

I always see myself in their eyes and that scares the hell out of me.

We're all on the same journey.

Let's take care of each other.

Remain

Environmental

Thorntons strives to be among the leaders in the industry when it comes to environmental stewardship and green initiatives.

Environmental Stewardship

As we design new stores and update our current locations, Thorntons carefully considers opportunities to improve our environment.

Some of our efforts include:

LED Lighting

In all of our currently remodeled stores as well as all future renovations, we have installed (or will install) LED cooler lights. We also have selected Beta LED exterior lighting for 39 of our stores and will continue to use them for all future renovations and new stores.

Harvesting Daylight

In an effort to reduce our energy consumption, we make strong use of natural lighting. We use window shades to help keep our stores naturally cooler and use natural lighting to reduce our usage of electric fixtures.

Recycling

We have two dumpsters on most of our premises, one for miscellaneous waste and one for cardboard recycling.

Efficient Appliances

We use Energy Star appliances in all of our locations.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Our stores are cleaned internally and externally with cleaners that are environmentally safe and friendly.

Eco-Fuels

Many Thorntons locations offer both E85 and Biodiesel for energy-efficient automobiles and trucks. "

A different kind of post today, on this day of Thanksgiving in the United States.

This interesting motorhome (or Caravan, or RV, whatever you prefer) is a Mobile Traveler, a high-end class C motorhome built from the early seventies until the late eighties using a van chassis (usually either a Dodge Ram Van or a Chevrolet/GMC van) as a basis. The cab and the vivid colors are straight out of the mid-1970s, and for a forty year old motorhome, it's in pretty good shape. These gas-hungry machines are usually about 20 feet long and get maybe 8 to 10 mpg from their big 440-cubic inch engines, but nobody buys something like this for speed or economy.

In fact, although people still use these for recreational camping (they're cheap, and still good at what they do), that's not what this is about either.

The streets of San Francisco, Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles and other western cities are dotted with such vehicles. As property values skyrocket, particularly in cities with high-dollar tech industries, more and more people are pushed out of places with reasonable rents, which are often then torn down to make way for luxury condos or worse - expensive pied-a-tierres that nobody actually lives in year round. The result in many of these cities has been a spectacular increase in homelessness. In the area where this Motorhome was seen, average rents have risen by 61% in six years.

Earlier this year, the annual "one night count" - done nationwide to assess the number of homeless living in various cities, showed a 21% increase in homelessness in Seattle. Tent cities and lines of RVs parked in industrial areas are increasingly common sights.

If you're home with your family and well fed, remember that some are not - and there but for fate, that could be you. It is incumbent on those who have to help those who don't, and always remember that if circumstances were different, it could be you needing help.

Asad Rahman, Assistant Fire Operations Specialist for the BLM Nevada Carson City District, has spent over twenty-five years involved in many facets of Wildland Fire Management. His passion is education, facilitative learning and fire-line leadership instruction. Shortly after high school, he embarked upon his first overseas adventure, fell in love with International travel and has become a student of global knowledge and values. Through the years he has balanced his two great loves through seasonal changes: Wildland Fire Management during dry season in the states and international travel in the winter months.

In 2004, Asad met and fell in love with Olivia, another wildland firefighter and world traveler. Asad had just returned from a life-changing trip to Southeast Asia and with great energy and passion shared with her his travel stories and photographs. It was after their first trip together to Southeast Asia in 2005 that they decided to create Project Enlighten to promote education opportunities for underprivileged youth across the globe. Asad is Project Enlighten’s International Project Manager, attending to the many complexities of the organization and its programs worldwide.

It's been a really good summer.

Time is flying though and there's still so much that I want to do.

I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am.

I've really been having a great time shooting out on the street and sharing these photographs with you guys.

"Faces on the street" has opened up so many doors and brought so much positivity to my life.

It's been such an incredible journey and you've always been the inspiration.

I only hope to give back more than I've been given.

It would feel good to complete the 'karmic circle.'
