Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth today. A giraffe could be up to 14 feet tall, about 1500 lbs, the neck alone can be over 6 ft long and weighs about 600 pounds! A giraffe's heart is 2 feet long and weighs about 25 pounds.

Giraffes are easy to distinguished by it's characteristics: its extremely long neck and legs, its horn-like ossicones, and distinctive coat patterns. Giraffes can run as fast as 35 mph, over short distances. Even the giraffe's tongue is long, 21-inches!

Giraffes only need to drink once every several days; they get most of their water from the plants they eat, twigs of trees, preferring Acacia trees. They also feed on shrubs, grass and fruit. A giraffe eats around 75 lbs of foliage daily. Giraffes are considered herbivorous.

Up to nine subspecies of giraffe are recognized : the West African, Rothschild's, reticulated aka Somali, Masai, Angolan, Nubian, Kordofan, Rhodesian and South African giraffe.

The nine subspecies are distinguished by their coat patterns.

Fully grown giraffes stand 4.3–5.7 m (14.1–18.7 ft) tall, with males taller than females. The tallest recorded male was 5.88 m (19.3 ft) and the tallest recorded female was 5.17 m (17.0 ft) tall.

The average weight is 1,192 kg (2,628 lb) for an adult male and 828 kg (1,825 lb) for an adult female. Giraffes see in color and their senses of hearing and smell are also sharp. The giraffe's tongue is about 45 cm (18 in) long.

The coat pattern serves as camouflage, allowing it to blend in the light and shade patterns of savannah woodlands. Each individual giraffe has a unique coat pattern.
