Der Blyde River Canyon ist ein 26 Kilometer langer, bis zu 800 Meter tiefer und hauptsächlich aus rotem Sandstein bestehender Canyon. Er befindet sich an der Panorama Route nordöstlich von Johannesburg und gilt als eines der großen Naturwunder Afrikas.
Durch den Blyde River Canyon, der an den Bourke’s Luck Potholes genannten Strudellöchern beginnt, fließt der Fluss Blyde River, der bei dem Thaba Chweu entspringt und in den Olifantsriver fließt.

It is the one of the larger canyons on Earth but much smaller than those of Asia, the Grand Canyon and the Fish River Canyon. Unlike the Grand and Fish River Canyon, the Blyde River Canyon is a "green canyon" which is dominated by subtropical vegetation. The canyon forms part of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve.
MYANMAR, Burma - Mandalay-Amarapura auf, unter und neben der U-Bein-Brücke.
Die U-Bein-Brücke ist ein Fußgängerübergang, der den Taungthaman-See in der Nähe von Amarapura in Myanmar quert. Die 1,2 Kilometer lange Brücke wurde um 1850 erbaut und gilt als älteste und längste Teakholz-Brücke der Welt. Der Beginn des Baus fällt in die Zeit, als die Hauptstadt des Königreichs Ava nach Amarapura verlegt wurde.
Den Namen hat die Brücke von Bürgermeister U Bein, der ihren Bau in Auftrag gab.[ Die Brücke ist auch in der heutigen Zeit eine wichtige Verbindung für die lokale Bevölkerung. Da sie von vielen Touristen besucht wird, versuchen Souvenir-Verkäufer gerne auf und an der Brücke Geschäfte zu machen. Viel Andrang herrscht im Juli und August; dann steht der Seespiegel am höchsten.
Zum Bau der Brücke wurde Holz aus dem ehemaligen Königspalast in Inwa verwendet. Über 1.086 Pfähle wurden in den Seegrund gerammt; einige wurden inzwischen durch Betonpfeiler ersetzt.
The U Bein Bridge is a pedestrian crossing that crosses Taungthaman Lake near Amarapura in Myanmar. The 1.2 km long bridge was built around 1850 and is considered the oldest and longest teak bridge in the world. The beginning of the construction coincides with the transfer of the capital of the Kingdom of Ava to Amarapura.
The bridge was named after Mayor U Bein, who commissioned its construction. [ The bridge is still an important connection for the local population today. Since it is visited by many tourists, souvenir sellers like to try to do business on and around the bridge. There is a lot of rush in July and August; then the lake level is at its highest.
Wood from the former royal palace in Inwa was used to build the bridge. Over 1,086 piles were driven into the lake bed; some have since been replaced by concrete piers.
After a bit of deliberation I’m going with this choice, the Apple logo is only the surface I chose to reflect the pages of the book in to create some interest and a compositional point. The book is a vintage book of poems, love it for the worn gilt edges (and general tattyness)

An egg in the hand is worth two in the bush? No... that's not quite right, is it?
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 19th of May is "hand(s)", but no arms. So, I have chosen a photograph I took about a month ago, which I was contemplating using for my Easter photo. I acquired a selection of egg decorations for Easter and I was very struck by this gilt and painted wooden egg, so I photographed it in my left hand and then made it a selective colour image which not only brough out the beautiful textures of the egg, but also my hand! Not bad for a one handed shot, even if I do say so myself! I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile!

Die Klarinette gilt als "junges Instrument"., es ist in Wirklichkeit recht betagt, ihre Geschichter reicht bis in die Antike zurück. Zum Beispiel in der altgyptischen Arghul, dem arabischen Zummarah und in vielen asiatischen Instrumenten ist das Urbild eines Schnabel-Instrumentes mit einem Rohrblatt vorgebildet.
Von meiner schon sehr alten B-Klarinette mit vielen Gebrauchspuren ist es das von mir sogenannte Herz(Klappen) zusehen. Die Gesamlänge meines Instrumentes beträgt 68 cm.
Die abgebildeten Klappen befinden sich im Unterstück dicht unter dem Oberstück.
Die Klarinette ist überall zu Hause, z.B. Klassik, Kammermusik, Jazz, Blasorchster, Klezmer, sie hat einen warmen runden Ton, kann aber auch schrill klingen.

The clarinet is considered a "young instrument", in reality it is quite old, its history goes back to antiquity. For example, in the ancient Egyptian arghul, the Arabic zummarah and in many Asian instruments the archetype of a beak instrument with a reed is preformed.
From my already very old Bb clarinet with many traces of use it is the so-called heart (keys). The total length of my instrument is 68 cm.
The illustrated keys are located in the lower part just below the upper part.
The clarinet is at home everywhere, e.g. classical music, chamber music, jazz, brass orchestras, klezmer, it has a warm round tone, but can also sound shrill.

The tiny gold button is surrounded by tiny silver buttons (that happen to look like Christmas decorations, which I thought was appropriate given the month) and a thimble to the left. I love sewing accessories although I do not sew myself!

We found this individual in a mixed flock foraging in the company of other species.
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. The Gilt-edged Tanager feeds on fruits and insects

unterwegs tief im Herzen der Sächsischen Schweiz...Blick aus der Webergrotte in die Weberschlüchte.
Frank Richter, bekannter Fotograf der Region, schrieb über den oberen Teil der Weberschlüchte: "Wilde, unberührte Natur. Man hat den Eindruck, als habe sich hier nie etwas geändert. Der Wind streicht durch die Bäume, der Schwarzspecht ruft, ab und an ist ein Knacken zu hören. Sonst ist es still."
Rechts ist eine der wohl bekanntesten Treppen im Elbsandsteingebirge zu sehen: über den "Treppenstein" verlief einst der Wanderweg steil hinauf in Richtung Süden über Grenzweg und Fremdenweg bis zum Prebischtor.
Aus Naturschutzgründen ist dieser Weg heute nicht mehr begehbar. Man kann zwar auf den "Treppenstein" klettern, dort fehlt dann aber die weitere Treppe zum Übergang in die benachbarte Felsenschlucht. Eine Zeitlang lag dort immer wieder ein Baumstamm als Hilfe, der in schöner Regelmäßigkeit von der Nationalparkverwaltung entfernt wurde. Insofern ist das Foto quasi ein Sackgassenbild: weiter hinein in die Weberschlüchte geht es nicht.
Die Webergrotte selbst ist eine der größten Klufthöhlen der Sächsischen Schweiz mit einer dreieckige Grundfläche von etwa 10x10x10 Meter und einer Höhe von etwa 5 Meter.

Here's part of the oldest tree in Amsterdam's Hortus Botanicus, a Turkish Hazel against Autumn Blue. It was planted here in 1795 when the Hortus had already been in this spot in the Amsterdam Plantage well over a hundred years (1682). The garden was founded in 1638 as a Hortus Medicus; and moved to new grounds at the central hospital in 1664. From there to the present location.
Despite its great age - more than 200 years old - our Wonderful Tree remains healthy and sturdy.
The Gilt-edged Tanager is a stunning inhabitant of lowland evergreen forest and secondary forest in Eastern Brazil from Bahia south to São Paulo. Gilt-edged Tanagers are brilliantly colored with orange-yellow upperparts with black streaking on the nape and back, black throat patch, turquoise breast and a green belly and undertail coverts.

In China gilt die Litschi, wo sie seit über 3000 Jahren kultiviert wird, als edelste aller Obstsorten und als Liebesfrucht. Sie wächst in Rispen von bis zu 30 Früchten am Litschibaum.. frisch aus der roten noppigen Schale gepult, schmeckt das perlmuttweiße saftige Fleisch fein aromatisch süß-säuerlich.

St. Georg gilt als eine der schönsten Hallenkirchen in Süddeutschland und wirkt trotz langer Bauzeit (1448 - 99) sehr einheitlich, was zumeist am Übergang der Bauleitung vom Vater Eseler auf seinen Sohn mit gleichem Namen lag.
Eine neogotische Purifizierung 1856 musste das Bauwerk über sich ergehen lassen, was jedoch hauptsächlich die Ausstattung betraf. Die schöne Sandsteinkanzel, gefertigt von 1480 - 90 ist von einem Schalldeckel von 1870 überdeckt.
Etwas im Hintergrund - links vom neogotischen Hochaltar
steht das spätgotische Sakramentshaus aus dem Jahre 1480, es ist in Franken für seine Schönheit berühmt.
Fatou gilt mit 66 Jahren als ältester weiblicher Flachlandgorilla weltweit.

I wish this tree was standing on a field and I had better light conditions. Unfortunately, neither was possible.
Nevertheless, I have an urgent need to introduce you to this wonder of nature. This tree, called Swedish oak, is in Bad Elster in Vogtland. It was planted around 1700. It is hard for me to imagine what the tree has already seen. At a height of 1 meter it has a circumference of a grandiose 5 meters and is over 20 meters high. This oak tree is rightly gilded as a natural monument.
I very much hope that it will remain as healthy and vital as it is today for a long time to come. In extreme cases they could become as old as 2000 years (again something I can hardly imagine). So she is still quite young for an oak.
Ich hätte mir gewünscht, dieser Baum würde auf einem Feld stehen und ich hätte bessere Lichtbedingungen gehabt. Beides war leider nicht möglich.
Trotzdem ist es mir ein dringendes Bedürfnis, Euch dieses Wunder der Natur vorzustellen. Dieser Baum, genannt Schwedeneiche, steht in Bad Elster im Vogtland. Er wurde ca. 1700 angepflanzt. Es ist für mich kaum vorstellbar, was der Baum schon alles gesehen hat. Er hat in 1 Meter Höhe einen Umfang von grandiosen 5 Metern und ist über 20 Meter hoch. Völlig zurecht gilt diese Eiche als Naturdenkmal.
Ich hoffe sehr, sie bleibt noch lange so gesund und vital, wie sie heute ist. Im Extremfall könnte sie bis zu 2000 Jahre als werden (wieder etwas, was ich mir kaum vorstellen kann). Für eine Eiche ist sie also immernoch recht jung.

Das Disch-Haus gilt als wichtigstes Zeugnis der Neuen Sachlichkeit in der Domstadt Köln und als eines der Hauptwerke des Architekten Bruno Paul. Die Einweihung erfolgte am 1. Februar 1930. Das Bauwerk steht unter Denkmalschutz.
Noch heute wirkt das von Erich Mendelsohns Kaufhausarchitektur beeinflusste Dischhaus modern, doch zur Entstehungszeit muss der Effekt aufsehenerregend, vielleicht schockierend gewesen sein. Zum einen aufgrund seiner Lage, stand es doch gegenüber der romanischen, im 15. Jahrhundert erweiterten Kirche St. Kolumba, einer der ältesten Pfarrkirchen Kölns. Zum anderen war es an der Stelle eines Gebäudes entstanden, das in mehrfacher Hinsicht eine vergangene Epoche verkörperte. Auf dem annähernd dreieckigen, verwinkelten Grundriss hatte zuvor ein Prachtbau der Kaiserzeit gestanden, der mit seinem historistischen Formenvokabular schon architektonisch den exakten Gegenpol zum Neubau verkörperte: das „Hôtel Disch, Cologne“, gegründet 1848.
Im Jahr 1928 beschloss der Aufsichtsrat der Hotel-Disch-AG, das inzwischen unrentabel gewordene Hotel abzureißen und an seiner Stelle ein gewinnversprechenderes Büro- und Geschäftshaus mit einer Nutzfläche von 10.000 Quadratmetern errichten zu lassen.
