Salwar kameez is the traditional dress worn by women of people India. Salwar are loose trousers and the kameez is a long shirt. It is the usual everyday dress for both men and women in India where it may be transliterated into English as shalwar qamiz. Some versions are sometimes called a Punjabi suit, after the Indus valley area called the Punjab. In Gujarat it is usually called a Zabho.
Salwar Kameez covers a woman's body in the way no other dress does. From neck to toe, salwar kameez provides complete protection against sun rays in summer and against chill will in winter. It is also one of those rare dresses that fit in well equally for business and for casual wear. Each salwar kameez comes with a long rectangular scarf that is meant to be draped from shoulders down. Like many other apparel art and design, the salwar kameez or salwar kurta too is a gift to the Indian traditional wear by the Mughals. In their custom, both men and women enjoyed this apparel, cut in long flowing panels. Elaborately embroidered with real gold and silver threads, studded with precious gemstones, those Mughal kurtas weighed nothing less than 5 to 10 kilograms. As time passed, the modifications were made according to the comfort and affordability of the people. Though the source of inspiration remains the same old Mughal fashion, many changes are seen in todays style of salwar kurta.

It is the usual everyday dress for both men and women in India where it may be transliterated into English as shalwar qamiz. Some versions are sometimes called a Punjabi suit, after the Indus valley area called the Punjab. In Gujarat it is usually called a Zabho.

Like many other apparel art and design, the salwar kameez or salwar kurta too is a gift to the Indian traditional wear by the Mughals. In their custom, both men and women enjoyed this apparel, cut in long flowing panels. Elaborately embroidered with real gold and silver threads, studded with precious gemstones, those Mughal kurtas weighed nothing less than 5 to 10 kilograms. As time passed, the modifications were made according to the comfort and affordability of the people. Though the source of inspiration remains the same old Mughal fashion, many changes are seen in todays style of salwar kurta.
