Every year for the Halloween season, Space Mountain undergoes a haunted transformation, becoming Ghost Galaxy. The ride is changed to include a ghost who "terrorizes" riders as they zip through the galaxy. In addition to special effects inside, the exterior also experiences the terror of the ghost. This includes a few projected scenes on the exterior accompanied by loud screeches and screams that can be heard throughout Tomorrowland. This is another projection in a series of sequences that transform the exterior.

I shot this alongside Gregg Cooper as we tried our best to capture the various projections. This proved to be quite a challenge because of the constantly changing colors of the mountain and that horrible overcast sky. Gregg's version can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/cypress_phillies/6279958454/

During HalloweenTime at Disneyland, Space Mountain undergoes a spooky transformation to become Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy...Featuring state of the art projected images mapped precisely to the exterior, every few minutes the ghost inside tries its best to break out of the Mountain in several different amazing scenes. This particular scene shows a giant hand trying to push its way out from the inside accompanied by loud screeching metal sounds and eerie moaning and screams that can be heard all the way from the Hub...

On this particular evening Ryan Pastorino and I were on the upper loading deck of the queue photographing the Mountain as it went through its transformations. We have decided to post each of our different photos today so that different approaches to the same idea can be compared. For the record, this shot was extremely difficult to finalize in post-processing due to the radically changing lights and a dreary overcast that was horrific in a different way...

My presentation is a HDR image from three exposures, merged in Photomatix using both Enhancer and Fusion, combined in PP with elements of two other additional exposures masked in. Many adjustments were made in Photoshop using various tools including Nik Color Efex 4, and Topaz Adjust.

I found this one while I was looking through some of my old Disneyland photos. Ghost Galaxy is probably my least favorite of the holiday overlays, it really doesn't do much to make me like Space Mountain more. I like the ride to begin with, and the additions just feel kind of gimmicky, especially compared with what a good job they do on the Haunted Mansion overlay.

I figured since I copied Tom on this trip, I might as well copy Matt too :P

Standing next to me while I took this was Michael Greening aka Ring of Fire Hot Sauce 1. We had met about 30 seconds earlier in the queue, completely at random. He saw my camera, struck up a conversation about photography, and we quickly realized that we had seen each other's work on Flickr before. After the ride, my wife and I had a great conversation with him and his wife. Awesome random encounter!

OK so there's no star tunnel music, but it's not even a question for me which Space Mountain ride is superior... and as a bonus, I don't leave this one with bruises on my thighs from cramming my 6'7" frame into the ride vehicle. The Ghost Galaxy overlay was pretty good, too, I'll look forward to riding it without it someday.

Ghost Galaxy is the HalloweenTime makeover of SPace Mountain at Disneyland. Imagineers have completely re=themed the attraction to feature a haunting by a evil space-ghost that terrorizes riders throughout the journey.

This is the launch sequence, just before entering the pitch-blackness of the ride and meeting the Ghost for the first time...eerie green lighting sets this scene apart from the normal launch sequence.

Ryan Pastorino has written a nice article for Disney Photography Blog about Ghost Galaxy featuring some of our photos we recently captured of the spooky HalloweenTime makeover.

Disneyland doesn't seem to advertise much for Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. Maybe they just know that once you're in the Park and night falls, you're going to...

Ok this is my last Ghost Galaxy post, I promise!

Just a quick handheld shot of the Space Mountain sign. This shot also shows off another of the series of projections on the building.

Today at www.DisneyPhotographyBlog.com, Gregg Cooper and I share some information and photos about the Ghost Galaxy overlay. Gregg nailed a couple of shots from inside the ride. Check it out! :)

During Halloween Time at Disneyland, Space Mountain turns into Ghost Galaxy. It is interesting to watch the mountain structure change to various creepy colors, hear pounding, growling and periodically see dents appear on the surface of the mountain.
