The DH89 Dragon Rapide was designed in 1933 as a faster, more passenger-friendly development of the de Havilland DH84 Dragon. Effectively it was a scaled-down version of the four-engined DH86 Express. But where the DH86 exhibited several vices, the Rapide proved to be a delight to fly. The comfortable cabin and gentle flying characteristics made it popular with passengers; as a result the Rapide became the mainstay of British commercial air travel throughout the 30s.
G-ANAF has always been the ugly duckling of the fleet. That huge Adam's apple contains sensitive radar equipment, powered by an auxiliary generator mounted on the outside of the fuselage.
First flown 11.03.54 and awaited collection 31.03.54. To 38MU 08.04.54 for storage.
Allocated to 224 Sqn, and delivered to Gibraltar on 05.10.54. Coded B.
‘Special fitment ’installations made in February, June and July in 1955.

The prototype Prentice first flew in 1946. The aircraft was also used by the Argentinian and Indian Air Forces as well as the RAF. Many of the Navigators and Radio operators of the RAF in the 50s learned their trade in these aircraft

She moved to Fontainebleu to join Air Forces Western Europe Communications Flight in 1949, returning to the UK in the sixties, where she was converted to a Devon C Mk2. After working for 21 Squadron at Andover and 207 Squadron at Northolt, she joined the Air Atlantique fleet in 1998.

Designed for short take-off and landing, the Twin Pioneer delights at airshows with her astonishing slow-flying abilities. The much-loved "Twin Pin" is the world's only surviving flyable example.
