Panorama, 6 photos stitched together
Every 2 years the Grand-Place (central square) in Brussels is covered with a flower carpet of begonias during 3 or 4 days. The carpet of 77 m x 24 m is composed by about 120 volunteers, with nearly one million begonias.
In 2016 the event was from Friday 12 to Monday 15 August 2016 at the Grand-Place (Grote Markt) in Brussels.
(Athough they said it is made of Belgian Begonias, I noticed a lot of Dahlia's !)
The theme in 2016 was Japan, and you can see the Japanese flag in the design, Koi carps, Bonsai , Bamboo and the crane bird.

Begun in 1030 under Conrad II, with the east end and high vault of 1090-1103, the imposing triple-aisled vaulted basilica of red sandstone is the "culmination of a design which was extremely influential in the subsequent development of Romanesque architecture during the 11th and 12th centuries". As the burial site for Salian, Staufer and Habsburg emperors and kings the cathedral is regarded as a symbol of imperial power. With the Abbey of Cluny in ruins, it remains the largest Romanesque church. It is considered to be "a turning point in European architecture", one of the most important architectural monuments of its time and one of the finest Romanesque monuments.
In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as "a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire".

The road seen below is the Hamilton road.
Between 1928 and 1932 Hamilton was the principal engineer of a British-built strategic road across Iraqi Kurdistan, which ran from Erbil, through Rawandiz, to the Iranian border near modern-day Piranshahr. The road became known as the Hamilton Road. Although Hamilton hoped the road would unite the peoples of the region, it has been fought over many times. He described the building of the road in a 1937 book entitled Road through Kurdistan.

The painted-snipe is not related to the true snipes and differs from them in habits, flight and appearance, being far more colorful and having longer legs than the snipes. It is unusual in that the female is larger and more brightly colored than the male, with the sides of the head, neck and throat a rich chestnut brown, and a distinct black band across the breast; the male is paler and greyer.
Mostly in the animal kingdom the males are more beautiful than the females. There are exceptions of course, like in humans, where females are far more beautiful than males. This bird is also an exception. The female is more colourful. I saw a female as well, but couldn't get her well on the photo.

Dyrhólaey promontory on the southern point of Iceland.
That day there was a strong wind and a rough sea. It was difficult to make the photos under these conditions with the mist that pearles on the lenses and the wind that drops the tripod. This place is known for bad weather most days of the year.
Psychedelic road

The lovely town of Dolceacqua, northern Italy, on the border with France. The famous, French impressionist Monet took a trip in Dolceacqua; he was very enchanted with the hamlet and he painted even 4 paintings that depicted the town (www.dolceacqua.it/turismo/images/stories/immagini-fisse/m...)

This is the today semi ruined house (already performed restoration work), where once lived Hamko, mother of Ali Pasha, the daughter of Zeinel - bey, who had baptized Christian Orthodox hidden from everyone. . Located in the traditional settlement of Ano Konitsa.

Καλή Παναγιά και καλό μήνα σε όλους
Στα ριζά της Πίνδου, στην είσοδο ενός μεγαλόπρεπου φαραγγιού, το οποίο χωρίζει τα βουνά Ίταμο και Κόζιακα, αλλά και ενώνει τη Θεσσαλία με την Ήπειρο, 18 χλμ. δυτικά από τα Τρίκαλα, βρίσκεται η Πύλη.
Σε μικρή απόσταση απέναντι από την Πύλη και δίπλα στον Πορταϊκό ποταμό, στον οικισμό Πόρτα Παναγιά βρίσκεται η εκκλησιά Πόρτα Παναγιά, το άλλοτε καθολικό της μονής Μεγάλων Πυλών η οποία ιδρύθηκε το 1283, στη θέση ή την περιοχή ιερού του Aπόλλωνα ή της Αθηνάς, από το σεβαστοκράτορα Ιωάννη Άγγελο Κομνηνό Δούκα, νόθο γιο του δεσπότη της Hπείρου Mιχαήλ B' Δούκα. Στα τέλη του 14ου αιώνα προστέθηκε ο εξωνάρθηκας. Η Ι. Μ. Μεγάλων Πυλών, που περιελάμβανε και το ναό της Πόρτας Παναγίας, στα βυζαντινά χρόνια ήταν μια πλούσια σταυροπηγιακή μονή (υπαγόταν δηλ. κατευθείαν στον πατριάρχη) με πολλά κτήματα, τα οποία, όταν η μονή διαλύθηκε στα χρόνια της Τουρκοκρατίας, δόθηκαν στους κατοίκους της γειτονικής Πόρτας, ενώ ο ναός με σιγιλλιώδες γράμμα του 1843, περιήλθε στην κυριότητα της Ι. Μ. Δουσίκου.
Ο Ι.Ναός Πόρτα Παναγιά, είναι σταυρεπίστεγη τρίκλιτη βασιλική που έχει κτισθεί πάνω σε αρχαίο ναό αφιερωμένο στην Αθηνά ή τον Απόλλωνα. Αυτό μαρτυρούν οι κίονες οι οποίοι ευρίσκονται στο χώρο γύρωθεν του ναού, όπως και η ύπαρξη πολλών αρχιτεκτονικών μελών είτε εντοιχισμένων είτε περισυλλεγέντων κατά καιρούς, που σήμερα φυλάσσονται στο ναό.
Στα δυτικά του ναού, υφίσταται ευρύς εξωνάρθηκας που ακολουθεί τον τύπο του εγγεγραμμένου σταυροειδούς με τρούλλο και χρονολογείται στα τέλη του 14ου αι. Ο ναός πέραν της ιδιόρρυθμης αρχιτεκτονικής έχει να παρουσιάσει και πλούσιο γλυπτό, ψηφιδωτό και γραπτό διάκοσμο, που δυστυχώς η πυρκαγιά του 1855 τον κατέστρεψε. Από τον γλυπτό διάκοσμο διασώθηκαν αποσπασματικά κιονόκρανα, που έστεφαν τους κίονες και τμήμα του μαρμάρινου τέμπλου στην Πρόθεση και το κεντρικό κλίτος. Από τον ψηφιδωτό διάκοσμο διεσώθηκαν - οι μοναδικές στον Ελλαδικό χώρο τόσο για την τεχνική και τεχνοτροπία όσο και για την ιδιόρρυθμη ανάστροφη θέση τους - ψηφιδωτές εικόνες του Χριστού και της Παναγίας.
Στη νοτιοδυτική γωνία βρίσκεται το αρκοσόλιο του κτήτορα με εντοιχισμένο βαπτιστήριο.
Από τον εικονογραφικό διάκοσμο, αξιοπρόσεκτη είναι η τοιχογραφία που καλύπτει την ημικυκλική κόγχη, στην ΝΔ γωνία του κυρίως ναού, όπου απεικονίζεται ο κτίτωρ της μονής Ιωάννης Δούκας που άγγελος τον οδηγεί στην προστάτιδα της μονής, Παναγία. Πρόκειται για μια από τις σπάνιες προσωπογραφίες των Κομνηνών.
Τελευταία ανασκαφική έρευνα έφερε στο φως και τον τάφο του Ιωάννη Δούκα - δυστυχώς συλημμένο. Η ίδια ανασκαφική έρευνα, που έγινε στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος Leader για την αναστήλωση της μονής, έφερε στο φως επίσης τμήματα του αρχικού μαρμάρινου τέμπλου, τμήματα από αρχαίες ενεπίγραφες στήλες, τμήματα επικράνων, όλα να αποτελούν το δεύτερο δάπεδο της μονής, σε δεύτερη βέβαια χρήση. Επίσης ήρθε στο φως η βάση του αρχικού λίθινου άμβωνα, η στασιδοφόρος και ο μαρμάρινος κίονας που στήριζε την Αγία Τράπεζα, ενώ τμηματικά αποκαλύφθηκε και το αρχικό μαρμάρινο δάπεδο του ναού.
Τέλος ενδιαφέρουσες είναι και οι τοιχογραφίες που σώζονται στο Ιερό και οι οποίες τοποθετούνται στον 13ο αι. Η τοιχογραφία στην καμάρα του κεντρικού κλίτους, εκείνες πλησίον του παραθύρου της νότιας πλευράς και της δυτικής πλευράς του κυρίως ναού, χρονολογούνται στον 18ο αι. όπως και εκείνες του νάρθηκα - στις οποίες δυστυχώς η πυρκαγιά του 1980, επέφερε ανεπανόρθωτη ζημιά.
Μία άγνωστη στους πολλούς και σπάνια ιστορική πληροφόρηση σχετικά με τη Μονή της “Πόρτας Παναγιάς” ή όπως στα βυζαντινά χρόνια απεκαλείτο “Ιερά Μονή της Ακαταμάχητου Θεοτόκου των Μεγάλων Πυλών”, την οποία οικοδόμησε η βυζαντινή οικογένεια των Αγγέλων Δούκα Κομνηνών είναι η παρακάτω:
Όπως η τεκμηριωμένη ιστορική έρευνα του καθηγητή – ακαδημαϊκού της Ακαδημίας Επιστημών Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών “Angelica Constantiniana” της Ρώμης, Χάρη Κουδούνα, αποδεικνύει, στη Μονή αυτή που σήμερα είναι μετόχι της Ι.Μ. Δουσίκου, εφυλάσσοντο οι πέτρες από την Αγία Οικία της Θεοτόκου στη Ναζαρέτ. Από τις πέτρες αυτές, κατόπιν μεταφοράς, προέκυψε ο Ιερός Ναός της Παναγίας του Λορέτο στον Νομό των Μάρκε Ιταλίας.
Ειδικότερα, οι πέτρες αυτές μεταφέρθηκαν στο Λορέτο από την Πύλη Τρικάλων, όπου είχανε φυλαχθεί και προστατευτεί στο βυζαντινό Μοναστήρι της Πόρτας Παναγιάς. Η μετατόπιση έγινε γιατί αυτά τα Άγια Κειμήλια περιλήφθηκαν στην κατόπιν συμφωνίας προικοδοτική λίστα των αγαθών, λόγω του γάμου μεταξύ της Πριγκίπισσας Θαμάρ ή Μαργαρίτας των Αγγέλων Δούκα Κομνηνών, κόρης του Δέσποτα της Ηπείρου Νικηφόρου Α’- ετεροθαλή αδερφού του Ιωάννη Α’ Δούκα Κομνηνού, Σεβαστοκράτορα της Θεσσαλίας, άμεσο πρόγονο της Α.Ε.Β. και Αυτοκράτορα Αλέξιου – και του Φιλίππου Β’ των Ανδεγαυδών (Ανζού), Πρίγκηπα του Τάραντα.

There was quite a bit of editing to do for this one. Apart from all the stuff to increase the drama I had to remove a power pylon, power lines and a couple of trees.
We are approaching the end of the second day of my walk of along Hadrian's Wall. Time to write the travel report for day three. I'll keep you posted when it hits my blog.
