The fact that JNU is a residential campus means the JNU Administration is directlyresponsible for the lives of students on campus. But we have seen how the tenure of thelast Dean of Students was marked by antagonism to students welfare in both word anddeed. While not paying any attention to the basic facilities available to students on campusor lack thereof, the Dean of Students office has been repeatedly trying to roll out a programme of privatization and commercialization, also marked by authoritarian decision-making and censorship of democratic practices. In a candid admission of the fact that"welfare" of students was no longer its agenda, erstwhile "Dean of Students' Welfare (DSW)" office renamed itself as merely the office of "Dean of Students (DoS)"!It is time that the administration becomes accountable to the students and we must ensure an end to the administrative insensitivity and non-seriousness towards the basic issues ofstudents and workers. JNUSU calls upon all students to join tomorrows (29 March 2012)protest demo at DoS at 2.30pm to ensure that the JNU Administration is forced to takeaction on the following urgent concerns: Resolve the Ongoing and Impending Hostel Crisis: Although eight months of the presentacademic year have gone by, many students (mainly boys) have not been allotted theirhostels, making it extremely difficult for them continue with their studies. Further, July isonly four months away and a new batch of students will enter the university. However,each year we have seen how the administration greets new students in a state of completeunpreparedness. .
The Dean of Students office must immediately take pro-active steps, well in advance, to ensure that all students are allotted hostel rooms and a new batch of students does not suffer due to lack of available hostel rooms. .
For the next semester, detailed information of the availability of rooms and proposedintake must be prepared right away on an immediate basis. A copy of these should be givento the JNUSU as well. Alternative accommodation for the students coming in the nextacademic year has to be prepared from now. JNUSU demands that along with the existing dormitories some more dormitories (both in the relevant Boys and Girls hostels and also in the Student Activity Centre) have to be prepared and furnished from now itself. .
Despite promises by the Dean of Students office that the old building of the School ofPhysical Sciences would be converted into dormitory for accommodating students the building was given to South Asian University. The university must take urgent steps to getback that building for accommodating students there. As a first step, those portions of the building which are unused by SAU must be used for accommodation arrangements. Necessary furniture like tables, chairs, beds must be purchased for the dormitories aswell as for the hostels as there is crisis of furniture across hostels. Following this advance assessment of how many students can be accommodated in hostel rooms and dormitories, the university must hire places with proper arrangement ofsecurity and infrastructure for students who would not receive accommodation under thisarrangement. The kind of harassment and inconvenience, large number of students facedsince last July cannot be allowed to be repeated in the coming academic year. .
