A challenging exercise in quadrant composition --

My daughter's cinema friend challenged me to design a 1x1 shot wherein each quadrant would be unique yet together would tell a visual story

A photo that I took two years ago during a two-day workshop at West Country Wildlife Photography in Devon

I mull over for quite a while of whether to write about taking this picture, its not a dramatic incident, but somehow shrouded with mystery... read blog

Godafoss (The Waterfall Of The Gods) is Iceland’s most impressive and beautiful waterfall.

Its name is associated with the country’s history. Having been settled on the 9th and 10th centuries, the Norse pagan religion was dominant. With the growth of Christianity throughout Europe, the pressure to abandon Norse increased to the point that Iceland feared an invasion. In 1000 AD it adopted Christianity as the official religion and the decision maker made the symbolic gesture of throwing the pagan idols into the waterfall. Hence its name since then: The Waterfall Of the Gods.

“Listen…” His words trailed off with a sigh. When he did that I knew what was coming next.

He gestured to the side and spoke again, “I know you’re the Princess and all, but you can’t have me locking up every person who looks at you the wrong way.”

I stopped and gave him one of my winning smiles, I even added a brief batting of my eyes for extra measure. “You like it.” I gave him a light tap to his chest and started walking again.

I knew he rolled his eyes at me, I could feel it. A moment later he followed after, re-taking up his position as my guard. He has had his position for over two-years now and not once had he hesitated to take care of anyone who came at me with ill-intentions. Sometimes I liked to think it was simply because he was good at his job, but other times I wondered if it was something else . . .

Black and white re-edit of a shot from May 2017. Enjoy!

From all accounts, looks like this eagle might be gesturing to me in a not so pleasant manner. Actually, its getting ready to scratch its head. LOL

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

On the street, every encounter is a story in the making…

This young woman and her child, their smiles bright and hopeful, remind us that street photography isn’t just about capturing the decisive moment and it’s also about respect and kindness.

A look, a smile, sometimes a small coin…

Yhese gestures create a genuine bond, a quiet understanding...

To be a street photographer is to balance curiosity with empathy, to catch emotion without losing sight of the human being behind it 🤔

Each day we see more Ukrainian flags go up around town as the people here rally behind the people of Ukraine. In the big picture it is just a small gesture but, as always, it is the little things that count. Now we all anxiously await the day when saner minds prevail, the atrocities end and peace and order is restored to Ukraine once again.

An immature(or a female) Snowy Owl flew from a nearby airport field on to the roof of a building at the edge of the park. An adult Red-tailed Hawk showed up to attack the owl and then thought otherwise when the Snowy took the defensive posture.

AI tells me that "a gesture is a physical action, often using the hands, arms, or face, that communicates a message, idea, or feeling, or it can be a symbolic act done to show an attitude or intention. Gestures can involve body language to emphasize speech or convey meaning in the absence of words." In this case, I did not know what kind of face to make. Emil Ferris is one of those humans who you can just sense their utter brilliance. I literally think it's an amazing gift to share the same respiratory space with such an amazing human. I was thrilled to be able to speak to Emil after the Q and A following The Music Box Theater's documentary of Art Spiegelman entitled Disaster is My Muse (This should be available on PBS in the upcoming months according to the director)

I was telling Emil Ferris about this nonfiction book I was reading called Beyond Anxiety by Martha Beck, who speaks about how a creativity cycle can disrupt an anxiety cycle. I think many of us artists in this current political climate are feeling increasingly restless and hopeless. Channeling that into art is a good idea at this time.

In any case, this is a great film and Emil Ferris's My Favorite Thing is Monsters (Book 1 and 2) is absolutely phenomenal. Highly recommended!

In these current times, the monsters are humans who have been given absolute power to enforce their wills and desires on all. Every day is a new horror and destruction of human rights. Some will try to counter this by praying ceaselessly. Others, like myself, will continue to maximize their time on Earth by doing art every spare moment. It is perhaps the only way to cope with the madness of reality and maybe enough of us could create a new world out of the embers left.

“Moonlit Masquerade”

In the garden silenced by the moon, the couple moved like elegant phantoms. Their Venetian masks, half mystery and half defiance, seemed to laugh at the world and at themselves, as if they had stepped out of Carroll’s twisted dream. He offered her his arm with a gesture that was both courtship and threat. Among tangled hedges and capricious shadows, they sealed a pact of madness and desire: to dance until the clock shattered and the White Rabbit could never again find the way out of the labyrinth.

A copy of the Chinese Yu Garden and Tea House of Shanghai in Hamburg (Hamburg is twinned with Shanghai, and the city of Shanghai donated the garden). This is much more than a symbolic gesture. It is a real transplant. Think of the Hindu temples recently inaugurated in the UK: in each case soil from holy ground in India was inserted into the temples' foundations. The world we live in is increasingly relying on the creativity and functioning of such transplants.

Driftwood just creates so many possibilities that it stretches the imagination.
