This is a velvet ant (actually a wasp) native to South America.
Wingless female wasps in the family Mutillidae resemble large, hairy ants. Their common name "velvet ant" refers to their dense pile of hair, which most often is bright scarlet or orange, but may also be black, white, silver, or gold. Their bright colors serve as aposematic signals. They are known for their extremely painful stings and the unusually tough exoskeleton (to the point that some entomologists have reported difficulty piercing them with steel pins when attempting to mount them for display in cabinets).

Fungus beetle.
He's walking along the underside edge of a bracket fungus. My camera is pointing straight up in the air to take this.
Periclystus laceratus Gerstaecker, 1888. Thanks to Shaun Winterton for providing the species determination in comments below. Found at Tregole National Park. Queensland, Australia.
Found low to the ground on a dried forb of some sort.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
Handsome fungus beetle.
My EXIF is still reporting that the flash did not fire when it did. If anyone knows why this is happening do let me know.
UPDATE: Seems the issue was a faulty TTL flash chord.
A custom order I finished yesterday.
This was the first time I only provided the technical know-how for a book. My customer is a professional designer, and the main portion of the design came from her: the raised design elements, color choices, and many details.
- I hope It will turn out to match her envisioned book when she is finally holding it in her hands.
The pages are 12cm x 12cm small. There are 196 of them, three different types of paper: white drawing paper, creme colored sketching paper, and lined writing paper. There's a pocket integrated in the back cover, a book mark ribbon, and several tassels to mark different sections of the book.
* 144 pages from a creme white paper (counting both sides of each sheet)
* page format is approximately 5″ x 6.3″ or 12.5cm x 16cm
* 4 pouches in the front

Back in my favourite tea shop again...drinking coffee!
I'm back from Spain now and putting together some final touches to the pages I created in my concertina Seawhite sketchbook while I was there. In the meantime I'll post the final few pages of my Gerstaecker sketchbook which has been wonderful to work with despite the ridiculous price I paid for them (I think they were something like £1 in the sale) The paper is thinner than that of the Daler Rowney I have been using but buckling tends to smooth out on drying and it can handle a medium wash...All in all...Bargain!

Another custom order for my variant of the buttonhole binding.
This is a classical scrapbook with slightly stiff watercolor pages and occasional spacers for to paste something to the pages.
The combination of the terrakotta colored Lokta paper and the brown book cloth looked almost 70s style to me. But the combination turned out warm and pleasant.
Inside covers with creme colored Hahnemühle paper.

Finally - I have at least one book as an example for each of the two-colored Coptic headbands that I tried out. I'm still wondering whether I really invented them. It is hard for me to believe that no-one else tried it. From left to right: Simple two-colored, poor double, true double, plain double, fake double.
... with so called antique deckle edge paper, a closure on the front, and Leipzig rose paper on the inside covers. - A training piece for a commission I am going to finish today.

This fun book has 288 blank pages from a creme colored paper. It takes all types of pens and pencils well, and when it comes to creating artwork it is especially well suited for dry media. This makes it a perfect journal for writing and sketching. The binding style allows it to open completely flat for ease of use.
This teddy bear fur is super soft (covering firm board), and the whole book sure to be a fun eye catcher when you use it in class, or for sketching in a public place. And it makes a super first journal for young writers.
- That was part of the original description. However, the original was a monster book (with eyes). This is a commissioned book. Made indeed for a first grader. And just like the original except it does not have eyes.
I was busy the last days, and finished the first 6 books in a new series that I call "Write it up!" - Unfortunately Etsy doesn't allow exclamation marks in the title so they will be called pencil stamp journals when I list them there.
They are already available in my own shop.
All books share the following properties:
* Fabric covers
* Pencil stamp on the front cover, many of them also carry the words: Write it up!
* 192 pages from a creme white paper
* page size is about 5″ x 6.3″ or 12.5cm x 16cm
* 4 pouches at the end to hold ephemeral stuff like cinema entry card, business cards, dried flowers, or whatever you would like to keep with your journal.
The box contains 7 pamphlets which makes this a total of 224 pages. – One journal, so to say. But divided into 7 pamphlets with the advantage that you can often start a new journal. – Isn’t the start always the most fun part? And you can carry them around with you without feeling like having a brick on your purse.
Along with the books and the box you get a total of 37 labels, 30 with flowers and 7 plain ones, to choose from for your chapbooks.
* 224 pages from a creme colored writing paper (counting both sides of each sheet)
* page format is 10.5cm × 14.8cm (A6), which is a little larger than 4" × 5.8"
* slipcase
* labels to glue on yourself
Suprise!
The last day of May and the first page in a new journal I'm trying out....An A5 Gerstaecker.
Had a wonderful suprise in the mail, a gift from Liz Steel! A copy of her wonderful sketches of Venice and an original sketch of a tea cup and cosy! Even the paper it was wrapped in was a Liz design I'm sure, such a distinctive style!
Thank you Liz!!!!
I have described this as a priming experiment using Gerstaecker coarse modelling paste, glorying in the wonderfully descriptive name 'Spachtelmasse grob'. This product, with typical German thoroughness, did exactly what it said it would do.
I have taken the liberty of doing this quick acrylic painting for your delectation. I have to say that for my average production, I found it slightly coarse but it has awakened my creative juices a little and I intend to do more using this paste as a primer. It will, of course, be perfectly good as a base for oil painting too.
As a precaution, I ordered from Gerstaecker at the same time, a tub of fine modelling paste, with which I have primed a number of small panels. These look extremely promising although I have not tried them out yet.
Twin to number 12, this one has some more pages, and is made with red suede leather, instead of brown nappa.
This old world style journal has fine red suede leather covers. On the inside of the cover you see a blue Italian paper printed with a floral pattern.
A piece of that paper also adorns the front cover.
This journal at a nice travel size sits in a slipcase for protection. This case's spine is lined with the covering leather, and the sides are covered with the Italian paper.
A strip of leather attached to the slipcase and fitted with a glass bead helps getting the book out of the case without strain on the book's binding.

this newest book in my mo.no series of modular notebooks (choose your own title, book fabric and cover design) goes out in the mail today.
Usually I am printing with black oil based book printing color. On request I can also use eco-friendly water based paint, though. And this was done with white water based lino printing color on this dark fabric.
New attempt with the Raspberry HQ, with a black background this time. The camera performs much better in these conditions : no red shift, less artifacts and not too much detail loss. I'm pleased with the result.
Another classic looking book in my travel journal series.
* 264 pages from a mid brown Kraft paper take all kinds of pens and pencils well
* page size is about 3-1/2" x 5" (8.8cm x 12.5 cm)
* opens completely flat for ease of use
* the book's covers are laminated from watercolor paper for an organic feel
* the slipcase is included in the listing
* the books in this series are numbered, this book carries the number 12
