You don't have to hang around old cars of the 1920's and 1930's for very long to realize that radiator caps became a status statement. Packards and Pierce-Arrows and many others had hood ornaments that were works of metallurgy art ....and this old Daniels, isn't bad, either. Boyertown Historical Vehicles Museum, PA.
At 101 years old, the paint and body work on this old girl has suffered some problems...but the "German Silver" or "Nickel Silver" radiator looks almost new. German Silver is not silver, but a very durable and attractive alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel. Back then the front wheels were usually even with the radiator, or maybe even in front of the radiator.. Custom built, Daniels were a Pennsylvania car that competed with other luxury brands--Pierce-Arrow, Cadillacs, Packard, and Peerless. Boyertown Historical Vehicles Museum.

In my never ending quest to shoot the definitive photo of the Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, I submit this photo taken with the a Pentax K-r using a Pentax Æ-3.5/200mm Takumar prime lens. This is the Spirit of Ecstasy on the 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost at the Frick Art & Historical Center, G. Whitney Snyder Gallery in Point Breeze. This is a "Yankee Rolls" built in Springfield, Massachusetts, the car had only one owner, the Snyder family until it was donated to the Frick by William Penn Snyder. The Spirit of Ecstasy was designed by artist Charles Sykes, the model was "Thorn", Eleanor Velasco Thornton, mistress of Lord John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu.

I don't think that there is a more beautiful hood ornament in existence than the Roll-Royce "Spirit of Ecstasy". The story behind it is as intriguing as the hood ornament itself. Although known by many different names, most notably: Emily, the Silver Lady or the Flying Lady, the official name "Spirit of Ecstasy" by English sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes is the name I like best. Sykes was commissioned by Lord Montagu to create a special hood ornament for his 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, the sculpture was called "The Whisper" for reason you'll find out later and that sculpture led to the development of "The Spirit of Ecstasy" that adorned the hoods of Rolls-Royce ever since. The name Spirit of Ecstasy came about from Sykes' claim to have experienced the spirit of ecstasy while driving a Rolls-Royce, but there is more to the story than a beautiful piece of sculpture and a high speed drive down an English country road. At the heart of the story behind this automotive icon is a love affair between one Lord Montagu and secretary. John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, the second Baron Montagu of Beaulieu after 1905, was a pioneer of the automobile movement and the editor of "The Car Illustrated" magazine. The model for the hood ornament was Montagu's secretary at the magazine, Eleanor Velasco Thornton, or "Thorn" as Montagu called her. They fell in love in 1902 while she worked for him at "The Car Illustrated" magazine. Their secret love (The Whisper) was limited to their small circle of friends for over a decade. The reason for the secrecy, beyond Eleanor being a lowly commoner, was Montagu 3 year marriage to Lady Cecil Victoria Constance Kerr! Lord Montagu and Thorn had an illegitimate daughter, Joan Eleanor Thornton who she gave up for adoption.
The love affair ended tragically when Eleanor Thonton drowned in 1915. The ship she and Lord Montagu were traveling on to India, the SS Persia was torpedoed and sank off the southern coast of Crete by a German U-boat, U-38, commanded by Captain Christian August Max Ahlmann Valentiner, he was the third highest-scoring German U-boat commander of WWI.
The Persia was hit by a torpedo while many of the passengers were having lunch. The torpedo struck the port side of the ship near boiler room, causing a massive explosion of the boilers, the stricken ship started taking water and quickly rolled over and sank within 5 minutes, taking with her the lives of 343 of the 519 passengers onboard including Eleanor Thornton who was in the first class dinning room having lunch with Lord Montegu. As they attempt to escape the dinning room, they were engulfed by a wall of water on the flooding deck, Eleanor was torn from Montegu grasp, he never saw her again. Lord Montagu was thought to have drowned as well, but somehow survived and was rescued after spending several days adrift in a life raft. Because of the sinking of the SS Peria and the lives lost, Captain Max Valentiner was branded a war criminal by the Allies for ordering the sinking of the Persia without warning. He was never brought to trial for his war crimes and went on to serve in WWII as group commander for U-Boots-Abnahmekommision (UAK) in Kiel-Danzig, he was promoted in 1941 to "KapitÀn zur See", the highest senior officer rank in the German Navy. Valentiner died of lung cancer in 1949. The wreckage of the SS Persia was discovered in 2001 at a depth of 8,400 feet.
A strange and tragic irony to all this and there are many, not the least of which the name Valentiner, but what I find so ironic is that the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament was cast in German silver.

The label inside of the lid, appears to be in French. Metal parts are of German silver. I'm not sure what the wood is. It appears too light in color for rosewood.
