Meissen porcelain is the first European hard-paste porcelain that was developed from 1708 by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. After his untimely death that October, Johann Friedrich Böttger, continued his work and brought porcelain to the market, and he has often been credited with the invention. The production of porcelain at Meissen, near Dresden, started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to establish one of the most famous porcelain manufacturers, still in business today as Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Its signature logo, the crossed swords, was introduced in 1720 to protect its production; the mark of the crossed swords is one of the oldest trademarks in existence. It dominated the style of European porcelain until 1756.

Gabriël Metsu (1629–1667) was a Dutch painter of history paintings, still lifes, portraits, and genre works. He was "a highly eclectic artist, who did not adhere to a consistent style, technique, or one type of subject for long periods". Only 14 of his 133 works are dated.

This was they type of art that found favor with Hitler and his regime (per museum signage)
Adolph Ziegler (1892-1959): Already a member of the Nazi Party in the early 1920s, he met Hitler in 1925 and became one of his advisors in artistic matters.
Ziegler organized the Degenerate Art Exhibition in Munich, going around the country seizing works from museums for the exhibit in the Munich Hofgarten.
During the war, Ziegler was sent to a prison camp after he publicly expressed doubts about the viability of Hitler's campaign. When Hitler was notified of Ziegler's “defeatist” attitude, he ordered his arrest. Ziegler was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp for six weeks. However, Hitler personally ordered that he be released from Dachau and be allowed to retire.
Ziegler was unable to successfully revive his career as an artist after the war.

Beckmann painted this calm image of a woman behind a large spray of red and white lilies the year after the Nazis forced him to flee Germany for Amsterdam. Like Germany's other modern artists, he had seen his work held up to public ridicule as "degenerate" and had lost a distinguished teaching appointment after Adolf Hitler came to power. Yet the discord and anxiety registered in many of Beckmann's other paintings from this time seem less evident in this sensual view.
Here, Beckmann observes a woman in a dark corset washing her hands, apparently unaware of the artist's gaze. Her jewelry and costume, and the lavish flowers, suggest that she is a member of the sophisticated world of artists, intellectuals, and affluent patrons often painted by Beckmann, but it is difficult to say for certain. Although he was certainly in the midst of personal and professional upheaval when he made this work, Beckmann chose to create an image of private pleasure and beauty.- SFMOMA

Christoph Amberger was a leading portraitist of the patrician classes in Augsburg where he is documented as a master in 1530. His works always include exceptionally interesting backgrounds imbued with a pronounced sense of movement. This is the case with the present portrait of Matthaüs Schwarz in which the background takes the form of a stormy, mountainous landscape typical of the artist. Amberger habitually placed considerable emphasis on realism, painting numerous elements in painstaking detail such as the glass of wine on the windowsill and the sitter’s personal horoscope, located in the upper right corner and showing his date of birth (20 February 1497 at 6.30pm). Matthaüs Schwarz was accountant to Germany’s leading bankers, the Fugger family, and Amberger depicts him surrounded by objects relating to his profession. He wears clothes in the Spanish style, in plain colours and with a preference for black and white. During the Renaissance period married couples were frequently depicted on separate panels and the pair to this panel, depicting Schwarz’s wife, Barbara Mangold, is now in the Kisters Collection. It dates to the same year as the present work
