(Stone Mountain Park, Georgia)

Sorry Jeff Davis (the Confederate president who was not popularly elected by voters in the Confederate states and who oversaw the loss of the Confederacy before his first term ran out), Robert E. Lee (who surrendered his army), and Stonewall Jackson (a venerated Confederate general who was shot and killed by friendly fire mid-war from North Carolinian Confederate soldiers as Jackson rode with his scouting squad to join them): A bas-relief artwork of you on this smooth Stone Mountain just doesn't work here.

Yuck!!

The original natural mountain (technically, a quartz monzonite dome monadnock) is way prettier and more impressive.

I have visited this state park and the trail that goes by the river in particular too many times last year. Didn't even know about its existence before that. I remember going there several times in Winter and in Spring. This photo was taken the first time I visited this park in Summer. And I have to say, with all the green splendor in the forest it looked even more beautiful!

I used to take an annual group trip out to Sapelo Island and stay in Pioneer Camp on Cabretta Island. This (2011) year our reservations were canceled four days before the trip when the course of Hurricane Irene was predicted to wash over Sapelo.

We told DNR that we understood, but to let us know if the island reopens. Two days later we found out that the island was taking reservations again, not because they called us, but because they placed an ad on NPR.

It was okay though, because National Park Service on Cumberland Island accommodated us on very short notice, and most of our group was able to make it to the island. I have some very fond memories of Sapelo, but I'm afraid I won't be returning.

On the last day, a squall hit our campsite and sent us running for cover. Thankfully, D.N.R. had constructed a pavilion since the last trip, so we managed to stay *fairly* dry. Still, it flooded a bit, as is evident in this photo of E's feet in the giant puddle that, despite our efforts to keep it outside the pavilion, inevitably came in.

These could be seen as the apex predators of the Pioneer Camp restrooms.

They were actually quite comforting given the infestation of giant hairy spiders that hang out above the showers. I felt that should one of the spiders get out of hand, one of these bad boys might step in and sort it out.

This is a HDR detail of the small falls beneath the Sitton's Gulch Trail Bridge at Cloudland Canyon SP.

Indian Springs State Park near Jackson, Georgia

Cloudland Canyon is in the northwest corner of Georgia. This photograph was taken a few week ago before the leaves fully changed but there is a little color showing on some trees. As you can see, it was very overcast when the picture was taken.
