Throw back Thursday

I was recently shown a social media post that went something along these lines….

Going outdoors – not cancelled

Music - not cancelled

Family - not cancelled

Reading - not cancelled

Singing - not cancelled

Laughing - not cancelled

Hope - not cancelled

Let’s remember what we have

Rather than going out and creating new images, it seems appropriate to look back at past collections of beautiful things our area has to offer during these difficult times and that will still be here when we are done with the current conditions….

Stay safe, stay supportive

The Brock Environmental Center is an international model for sustainable building and will serve as the regional headquarters for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and its award-winning environmental education programs.

The Center is named in honor of Joan and Macon Brock of Virginia Beach, who generously provided a $3.6 million leadership gift toward the $21 million project.

It's a party! Come by for a building tour, music and activities for all ages. Sunday November 16, Community Grand Opening, 1-4 pm

With the escalation of Hurricane Joaquin, the International Sandsculpting Championship tent was, unfortunately, forced to shut down early. Hopefully, you can get a sense of the quality of the artwork and artists that the Neptune Festival draws each year (even if you did not get to visit the 2015 show).

Just AART Day (Artist & Activist Relying on Technology) is a fun day that gives teens 12 to 19 the opportunity to be creative and add their personal touch to a teen-centered mural designed by artist Shari Evans, a Hampton University graduate and full-time graphic designer. This event provides another opportunity for the City of Virginia Beach to celebrate youth as they celebrate themselves.

Just AART Day, sponsored by the city Office of Cultural Affairs, is free and open to the public. Patrons can also enjoy face painting, sidewalk art and raffle prizes along with live performances by Teens With a Purpose singers, musicians and youth poets. For more information, visit www.twp-themovement.org or www.sandlercenter.org.

Great weather and an appreciative crowd greeted more than 80 units that participated in this year's annual Veterans Day Parade which started at 16th St. & Atlantic Ave., and ended at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial at 19th St., across from the Convention Center.

32 of the world's most talented sculptors were in Virginia Beach creating incredible works of art for our viewing pleasure. With a world-class venue, talent, and prize purse, Neptune's International Sandsculpting Championship has distinguished itself as a premier event unlike any other for miles. From the gallery feel and extended viewing hours, your sandsculpting fill can be quelled with a single visit.

It's been the signature event of the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival since its inception. Now it becomes the signature event of an entire region as the International Sandsculpting Championship expands to ten days. With an international field of sculptors representing countries from around the world, the expansion of the competition puts this as one of the most distinctive events of its kind in the world.

A huge tent, almost as large as a football field, houses 22 sculptures created by 12 solo and 10 doubles teams! Sculptors competed for the largest prize purse awarded in the country.
