I think that AI image generation is similar in many ways to photography. The camera itself handles all the fine details, but the photographer is in charge of curating the types of images that will be created.
Ultimately, it is all about maximizing the probability that something good will be created.
This is very similar to AI image generation, in terms of the skills involved and what the human does vs. what the machine does.
You can't compare AI image generation to the process of actually making these images from scratch with 3D software or paint/pencils, where the human controls every detail.
However, I think the process really is very similar to that of photography, as I made the case for above. I think that DALL-E 3 is by far the most powerful AI image generation tool currently available.

A futuristic android stands before a brick wall, spray can in hand, creating a bold portrait of a singer with a vintage microphone. The image deliberately mixes two worlds: the unmistakably human traditions of music, portraiture and street art with the rapidly developing world of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The title, “The Outrage – When a Robot Paints a Legend,” is deliberately provocative. AI-generated art has created considerable debate about creativity, originality and the future role of human artists. Is a machine capable of creating art, or is it simply executing the ideas and instructions of the person behind it?
Perhaps the android isn't replacing the artist at all. It might simply represent another tool — rather like the camera, computer and digital darkroom were once new tools themselves.
For me, this was an experiment in combining photography, street-art imagery and AI image generation to create something that couldn't have existed in the original photograph.
The interesting question isn't simply “Is this art?” — but where does the human artist end and the machine begin?
